Things Americans don't like to talk about
ratilfar
by ratilfar  4-30-2008    26
Read the whole article, it is illuminating to say the least. I thought this passage said it best: " If you listen to a lot of conservatives, they'll tell you that the difference between them and us is that conservatives love America and liberals hate America.... They don't get it. We love America just as much as they do. But in a different Way. You see, they love America the way a 4-year-old loves her Mommy. Liberals love America like grown-ups. To a 4-year-old, everything Mommy does is wonderful and anyone who criticizes Mommy is bad. Grown-up love means actually understanding what you love, taking the good with the bad, and helping your loved one grow. Love takes attention and work and is the best thing in the world."

Conscience versus Belief and Dogma

Although those with deep beliefs and expressed values do any amazing job of advertising their compassion and calls for justice in the names of far away people, only conscience cam motivate love for the person next door. Who is my neighbour?

Finally! Court rules US owes Native Americans $455M
masbury
by masbury  8-8-2008    20
Suit seeks to force US govt to account for all royalties due individual Native Americans since 1887 on seized lands; they've been forced to accept far less than market value of drilling rights on their lands for 120 years. Government protecting business interests by paying low royalties, robbing poor people. I hope they appeal - this isn't near enough.

Ron Paul rants against Left
masbury
by masbury  11-24-2007    11
Lots of you love Paul, but this is a little far-out for my taste. I lean left on some issues because I hold "my faith in God before" my "faith in the state." Our nation's "Christian heritage" may be a white male Protestant exaggeration. Ask blacks or native Americans or Mexican- or Asian- Americans, or women, or starving old folks before Social Security (or even Catholics, for that matter) if they'd like to go back to 17th/18th/19th-century "Christian" America. I'll take the walk over the talk any day. By the way, Christmas as we know it is a Victorian invention along the lines of Dickens' A Christmas Carol . I doubt that the Founders would find it "Christian." Paul seems a bit in the dark, here.

More: The Daily News in Galveston interviewed Mora's mother, who confirmed his death and that he was one of the co-authors of the Times piece. The article today relates: "Olga Capetillo said that by the time Mora submitted the editorial, he had grown increasingly depressed. 'I told him God is going to take care of him and take him home,' she said. 'But yesterday is the darkest day for me.'”

America's Near-Poor - There But For Grace ...
Marcariel
by Marcariel  10-3-2007    1
I see this a lot here in America. I may even be one of these people myself! One paycheck from welfare or becoming a "street person" with no home. Women are in more vulnerable to this than men. I recently spent the day with a homeless woman. I saw where she lived (in the woods behind a shopping center) I saw where she slept (in a sleeping bag on some plastic bags and newspaper) and I went to the grocery store with her to buy her meal for the day (after she had earned $3.00 answering some questions at a market research office ... where I met her). I took her to a county office to get 6 public bus coupons so she could get across town to pan-handle for money to continue paying for her small storage room where everything she owned was stored. There but for grace my friends!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/There_But_For_the_Grace_of_God_(Stargate_SG-1)

Democrat House "Apologizes" for Slavery
pkronfield
by pkronfield  7-30-2008    2
This is but another stupid liberal attempt to pander to blacks for their vote this November. The trouble is, the United States Government had nothing to do with "forcing Africans into slavery". In fact it was Arab slave traders who did that. And it was the United States government who went to war to abolish slavery. This government doesn't owe negros an apology. It is the negros who owe gratitude to the United States for the bounty and opportunity afforded them. Another proof that liberals are unfit to run our magnificent country.

Cherokees accused of racism by black tribesmen
gingembre
by gingembre  3-6-2007    1
Wow! Here's a bit more, but there's more at the source, including the comments section: "A similar situation occurred in 2000, when the Seminole Nation voted to cast freedmen descendants out of its tribe, said Jon Velie, a legal expert on Indian law who has represented freedmen descendants in previous cases. "The United States, when posed the same situation with the Seminoles, would not recognise the election and they ultimately cut off most federal programmes to the Seminoles," Mr Velie said. "They also determined the Seminoles, without this relationship with the government, were not authorised to conduct gaming." Casinos make up a huge majority of the income of Native American tribes, totalling some £11 billion annually. Ultimately, the Seminole freedmen were allowed back into the tribe, Mr Velie said." It's doubtful that the Cherokee will opt to exclude their black brothers due to US government sanctions that are likely to occur. But, geez, I find all this disillusioning

You've probably heard the popular American reality TV show Survivor is supposedly grouping contestants by race this season. This is like throwing red meat to some right-wing politicians and entertainers, who seem to be increasingly comfortable with racist taunts this year in the lead-up to mid-term elections.
