Obama and Ayers: A Radical Pentagon Bomber NYTimes
merrie
by merrie  10-4-2008
Since earning a doctorate in education at Columbia in 1987, Mr. Ayers has been a professor of education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, the author or editor of 15 books, and an advocate of school reform. Steve Chapman, a columnist for The Chicago Tribune, defended Mr. Obama’s relationship with the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., his longtime pastor, whose black liberation theology and “God damn America” sermon became notorious last spring. But he denounced Mr. Obama for associating with Mr. Ayers, whom he said the University of Illinois should never have hired. “I don’t think there’s a statute of limitations on terrorist bombings,” Mr. Chapman said in an interview. The Schools Project The Ayers-Obama connection first came to public attention last spring, when both Senator Hilary Rodham Clinton, Mr. Obama’s Democratic primary rival, and Mr. McCain brought it up. the archives of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge at the University of Illinois were opened to rese

The New York Times is a “Pro-Obama Advocacy Organization”
merrie
by merrie  9-23-2008    1
by an standard a journalistic organization. It is a pro-Obama advocacy organization that every day attacks the McCain campaign, attacks Sen. McCain, attacks Gov. Palin, and excuses Sen. Obama. There is no level of public vetting with regard to Sen. Obama’s record, his background, his past statements. There is no level of outrage directed at his deceitful ads. This is an organization that is completely, totally, 150 percent in the tank for the Democratic candidate, which is their prerogative to be, but let’s not be dishonest and call it something other than what it is. Everything that is read in the New York Times that attacks this campaign should be evaluated by the American people from that perspective, that it is an organization that has made a decision to cast aside its journalistic integrity and tradition to advocate for the defeat of one candidate, in this case John McCain, and advocate for the election of the other candidate, Barack Obama.

Charles Gibson's Gaffe Charles Krauthammer
merrie
by merrie  9-12-2008    3
I was the first to use the term. In the cover essay of the June 4, 2001, issue of the Weekly Standard entitled, "The Bush Doctrine: ABM, Kyoto, and the New American Unilateralism," I suggested that the Bush administration policies of unilaterally withdrawing from the ABM treaty and rejecting the Kyoto protocol, together with others, amounted to a radical change in foreign policy that should be called the Bush Doctrine. Until Iraq. A year later, when the Iraq war was looming, Bush offered his major justification by enunciating a doctrine of preemptive war. This is the one Charlie Gibson thinks is the Bush doctrine. It's not. It's the third in a series and was superseded by the fourth and current definition of the Bush doctrine, the most sweeping formulation of the Bush approach to foreign policy and the one that most clearly and distinctively defines the Bush years.

Reaction To Announcement on Governor Palin
merrie
by merrie  8-30-2008    1
The campaign has been busily preparing TV commercials to run against Mitt Romney — with aides gleefully watching hours of footage of Romney-McCain exchanges from the primary — but far little opposition research had been prepared about the Alaska governor. And aides said no commercials were ready to be immediately released, which the McCain campaign did when Mr. Biden was chosen.” There’s more at the link, including that the Obama campaign had to delay its campaign flight for more Palin prep and, as a result, McCain-Palin got a half-day of uninterrupted media time. The Obama campaign was not prepared for the Palin announcement, a choice that was unexpected but not totally off the radar. That’s not good in politics but it’s very discouraging in governing. In fact, it makes the Obama campaign sound as clueless as it often describes the Bush Administration.

NYTimes Skewers "The Love Guru"
ericskiff
by ericskiff  6-22-2008    3
Wow - this is one of the most damning reviews of a popular movie I've ever read. Everything I've seen of "The Love Guru" looks like complete dreck, and I'm a pretty big Mike Meyers fan, dating back to the "So I Married and Ax Murderer" days. The Times really gives it to him here - I'm surprised to see them go so far in panning it, it must be even worse than I expected.

Bob Herbert Owes John McCain An Apology

On August 2nd, New York Times columnist Bob Herbert accused the McCain campaign of waging a racist attack on Barack Obama for comparing him to Paris Hilton. foul, poisonous and emanated from the upper reaches of the Republican Party. (What a surprise.) designed to exploit the hostility, anxiety and resentment of the many white Americans who are still freakishly hung up on the idea of black men rising above their station and becoming sexually involved with white women.

Computer Models Suggests Mid-West Droughts...Oops

Floods…the opposite of droughts. Of course, today these alarmists are pointing at the floods in the Midwest and saying, “I told you so, here is proof of global warming.” In that case, what isn’t proof of global warming, and how does one go about debating these sorts of incongruities? Unfortunately, the media and politicians have not done a good enough job of making prophets account for their past errant prophetic utterances. Instead, they accept as fact whatever dubious claims Hansen and Gore happen to be making at the moment.

Dinosaur Media March Deeper Into The Tar Pit

Barry O is on his preemptive victory lap around the world and he steadfastly refuses to take questions from the foreign press. I wonder why? it's not like he isn't great reading off a prompter ?off the cuff?answering tough questions right? What would our media say if it was the Maverick dodging tough questions? I kinda doubt they would let it slide, but the Obama slinks along unmolested by any serious scrutiny from our self-selected watchdogs of the Fourth Estate. It is refreshing as a member of the newest type of new media to know that every day the solons of the liberal e-light who make up the dinosaur media march ever deeper into the tar pit.

Washington Post editor to step down
Joshua Zumbrun
by Joshua Zumbrun  6-23-2008
Okay, I know a lot of people probably don't care, but I used to work there so I do. Downie is probably the best currently serving newspaper editor, and I think that no matter what anybody says this is a big blow for the Post. Downie says, "I'm ready to do this, because so much further change now needs to take place at the newspaper and Web site, and someone else should be tackling that." I dunno. Before the Internet age, when Downie became editor, the paper was barely available outside of the Washington region. It's become one of the most powerful newspaper brands on the Internet and I think a huge reason for that is because Downie was always out there insisting on the absolute highest standards of quality. Now, the Post is not a perfect place, and newspapers are definitely in a lot of trouble (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/23/business/media/23paper.html) but Downie's shoes will be extremely tough and maybe impossible to fill, imho.

So here’s our new policy on A.P. stories: they don’t exist. We don’t see them, we don’t quote them, we don’t link to them. They’re banned until they abandon this new strategy, and I encourage others to do the same until they back down from these ridiculous attempts to stop the spread of information around the Internet. Those that disregard the guidelines risk being sued by the A.P., despite the fact that such use may fall under the concept of fair use.

FISA Legislation: Congress Still Dithering!
merrie
by merrie  6-19-2008    1
That bill hit a wall when the trial lawyers asked Pelosi to preserve their chance to earn huge contingency fees in lawsuits against the telecoms alleging the sort of class-action tort claims used to blackmail big companies into high-dollar settlements. These lawsuits aren’t merely the latest evolution in class action ambulance chasing. They are a form of “lawfare”: the use of the courts to interfere in America’s conduct in the war the terrorists are waging against us. The compromise measure reportedly enables the telecoms to obtain civil immunity by showing a court a request for cooperation from the government that assured the company that cooperation was legal. The trial lawyers and several liberal senators, chief among them Wisconsin’s Russell Feingold, are trying to block the compromise. Their amen chorus among the politically-activist media are working hard to help them.

Tons of you are reading “Lone Survivor,” the NYTimes best-seller I’ve spotlighted here and here. Now, there’s this incredible news from Hollywood gossip columnist Nikki Finke. Tinseltown wants to make a movie out of the book: I hear there’s a frenzied Hollywood bidding war going on today over the No. 1 book on The New York Times non-fiction bestseller list: Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes Of SEAL Team 10 by Marcus Luttrell. Studio toppers are interrupting their vacations to try to get this book which was sold to Little Brown by superagent Ed Victor for a seven figure advance. How interesting that liberal Hollywood is hot for this patriotic tell-all by a proud conservative.
