Centuries old code survives in remote Albanian village
tommy2balmy
by tommy2balmy  10-4-2008    1
The code covers everything from inheritances and the rights of the church to the treatment of livestock. In Theth, nobody will sell land to an outsider, or even to another villager. Brides must come from outside the valley, a tradition that follows along the lines of the Kanun's rule that marriage within the same clan is forbidden. "The Kanun is the law. Just like the state law," explains Gjovalin Lokthi, 39, a gruff "kryeplak," or elected chief of the village.

Drop the Charges Against Ben Saari
deadcowkid
by deadcowkid  10-4-2008
Read full account at source. “What happened was that I was just finishing the march going past Santa Rosa City Hall and in front of the Court House, the minutemen were out—they’re right-wing racist vigilantes—and they were being protected by the Santa Rosa police department. I got a phone call that cameras and observers were needed at Juilliard Park behind the stage, so I hustled over there. When I got through the crowd to the edge of the park, what I saw was one officer with a very agitated dog amid a crowd of thousands of people. The officer was visibly panicked and shouting at people to back up. There were three other officers with expendable batons employed and they were engaged in a face-off with a group of young people, mostly teenagers. The police weren’t giving any clear or consistent commands. Police approaching from three different directions were shouting to backup. It’s confusing, it’s hard to comply with, you don’t know what’s going on. The police tactics were really conf

Large dog savaged by killer squirrels
cakebelly
by cakebelly  10-4-2008
continues: Mikhail Tiyunov, a scientist in the region, said it was the first he had ever heard of such an attack. While squirrels without sources of protein might attack birds' nests, he said, the idea of them chewing a dog to death was "absurd". "If it really happened, things must be pretty bad in our forests," he added. Komosmolskaya Pravda notes that in a previous incident this autumn chipmunks terrorised cats in a part of the territory. A Lazo man who called himself only Mikhalich said there had been "no pine cones at all" in the local forests this year. "The little beasts are agitated because they have nothing to eat," he added.

He gives tricks of the trade, including the secrets of candle divinations, egg healing ceremonies, and protecting one's energetic field from "bad energy." Beery also discusses the many roles of the shaman, what it's like to practice in the West, and what happens to us if we don't "tune into our own powers" and spiritual calling.

World's Greenest Museum
Rebecca Ruiz
by Rebecca Ruiz  9-29-2008
It took 10 years to build and cost $500 million, but the California Academy of Sciences finally unveiled its new green home. The single building hosts a planetarium, natural history museum, aquarium and four-story rain forest. Some of the green components include floor to ceiling windows that provide natural lighting; a "living roof" with solar panels and native plants; and insulation made of recycled blue jeans.

Flickr has Porn
Imnclady
by Imnclady  9-27-2008
As a Flickr member I can opt out of seeing pictures by people who post nude or pornigraphic pictures...but I wonder, who else is looking at them? Should I worry that my granddaughter who is 13 years old may mosey on into one of these porn sites on what I thought was mostly used for sharing family photos, like new babies, picnics in the park and pictures you took during vacation....I also know that some pictures of children are being stolen and used in ads or blogs....I found one of my pictures of my 3 day old grandson on a wordpress.org blog where they talk about having cancer. You can imagine my shock, when I saw his picture displayed (he was yawning and if you didn't know it, he looked more like he was crying in pain)....Evidently the author was trying to lure readers who want to see someone (in this case babies) suffering and in pain...I immediately set the picture to private...when I last checked the image was gone, but my name over it is still there, with a link to my Flickr

Japanese dolphin drive hunts and the dolphin captivity industry
papananook
by papananook  9-25-2008    1
The dolphin captivity industry, by purchasing dolphins from the drive hunts, are maintaining the drive hunts by keeping them economically viable. Both Japanese and Western dolphin trainers can be seen in these videos, so it's not merely a local thing to Japan. Since the early to mid 1990s, SeaWorld has no longer purchased dolphins from the Japanese drive hunts for good PR, and has turned to a breeding program. However, there are now plans to build a new SeaWorld in Dubai, UAE. How do they plan to procure enough animals to open this new park? I very much doubt that the breeding program that SeaWorld maintains would sufficiently produce enough animals to stuff into a whole new park with a whole new Shamu show, and their other animals such as bottlenose dolphins? Especially with the high mortality rate in their parks as it is, with another Orca dying unexpectedly in one of the SeaWorld parks just recently. So how would they do it? Without the restrictions imposed on SeaWorld in the
