POPSAn atheists experience This is a quote from an atheist that visited 30 churches to study what impressions they would leave him with. Look at what he was left with....

POPSDepression: It's Spiritually Incorrect In the face of such ignorance I say this, a prayer a priest friend recently taught me: "Jesus, save me from your followers." (Or, my secular version: "I'm sorry. My fault. I forgot you were an idiot.")

POPSYoung adults aren't sticking with church Of those that returned or stayed : they grew up with both parents committed to the church (indoctrination), had charismatic pastors (entertained), and church members invested in their spiritual development (got attention) - doesn't this suggest that young adults that do return/stay are not doing it because the message of god is true, but because they simply like the idea of believing because of an emotional payoff?

POPSFundamentalism and history An article by TheRevealer.org's Jeff Sharlet on the relationship between American fundamentalist Christianity and the country's history. His trademark rambling, ethnographic, personal style.

POPSChristian Gay Sex Scandal: Leader Haggard Steps Down Amid Affair Inquiry "They want to protect the sanctity of marriage and I am trying to figure out what that means because they are not doing a good job," Jones said of anti-gay marriage proponents. "To have someone in such a high profile position preaching against them and doing opposite behind other people's backs is hypocritical."

POPSTelevangelists Hinn & Dollar Under Senate Investigation "All the ministries preach a form of Word of Faith theology, known as prosperity gospel, which teaches that God wants believers to reap material rewards for their faith." "Grassley has insisted his investigation "has nothing to do with church doctrine" and is strictly concerned with making sure nonprofit groups are following the law."

POPSThou shall not touch.. The Decree on Creepy Overlong Stares states that, in the rare instances when a Boston-area priest must look straight into the eyes of a child, said pastor must first don a pair of specially designed sunglasses, the lenses of which have been coated in a compound harvested from the sweat glands of ascetic eunuchs who live deep in the Catacombs of Agony just beneath Vatican City. The active ingredient of the special compound reportedly dims the bright light of a child's tantalizing innocence, thus making the youth appear just as old and soiled and sinful as, well, everyone else.

POPSArmageddon? "Another speaker, Rev. Dudley Rutherford, predicted that if Prop. 8 fails, the God-ordained institution of marriage would be destroyed; the engine of hate crimes legislation would be fueled, ultimately leading to it being illegal to read some sections of the Bible; the floodgates would be open to gay couples suing to force churches to marry them; and the polygamists would be next." Yes, folks we don't have a war against poverty anymore, we have more important things to focus on such as THE GAYS--who are causing the rising divorce rate among heterosexuals!

POPSChurch is the gym of the soul I was a huge Rocky fan growing up and had NO idea that there were any religious overtones. Interesting to see Sly following the Passion of the Christ marketing model.

POPSEvangelicals Fear the Loss of Their Teenagers Interesting article. I like how they point to MTV & yout cuture as culprits.. probably rightly so. Kids these days have soo much access to information, so much ability to communicate with other kids from around the country and around the world, and such mixed messages from media, etc it's not hard to see why this is happneing.

POPSBrotherly Love? Dobson Quits Haggard So much for bearing your brother's burden, loving your neighbor (literally - they're both in Colorado) and all that jive. This abandonment is worse than the scandal itself.

POPSAre European clergy losing faith in God? A brief report in Ode Magazine on a study by Dutch sociologist of religion Hijme Stoffels suggests that one in six Dutch pastors questions or denies the existence of God. Doubts appear to increase with age. I couldn't find anything more on this in English.

POPSObama, Me And Our Pastors Obama took the well-traveled road that all Machiavellian, ambitious, unscrupulous men take, which is why men of this ilk are very dangerous and should never be given the reigns of political power – for they lust after money, power, control, legacy and the applause from the fickle crowds above all else. Could it be that Obama sought out these radicals because he is a certified socialist with the most extremist liberal voting record in the Senate? Obama and I are the same age (46, born one month apart) After graduating from law school, I lived in Chicago from 1994-97. There I wrote several e-mails to Obama while he was as an adjunct professor of constitutional law at the University of Chicago, repeatedly asking if he could help me obtain a teaching position there. The response from this man who is down with helping "the disenfranchised"? – silence of the lambs – nothing.

POPSDeath Penalty Tests A Church "The killings have not just stunned the congregation, they have spurred quiet debate about how it should respond to the crime and whether it should publicly oppose the punishment that may follow. It has also caused a few to reassess how they feel about the punishment."
