All That Money You've Lost — Where Did It Go?
merrie
by merrie  Today 7:28 AM    1
. . . screen, confident that you'll get good money for them when you decide to sell. And you won't be alone — staring at millions of computer screens are other investors who share your confidence that the value of their portfolios will hold up. But that collective confidence, Jorgenson says, is gone. And when confidence is drained out of a financial system , a lot of investors will decide to sell at any price, and a big chunk of that money you thought your investments were worth simply goes away. In the process, of course, you're losing wealth. But does that mean someone else must be gaining it? Does the world have some fixed amount of wealth that shifts between people, nations and institutions with the ebb and flow of the economy?

Diwali Celebrations in Punjab
infibeam
by infibeam  Today 1:46 AM
Punjab means five rivers in the literal sense. The state is synonymous with prosperity, cheerfulness and an exuberance which is hard to miss. The lively people of Punjab cannot be left behind in the festivities of Diwali. Gaiety and merriment is so innate to Punjab that it is only natural that you expect something unique about the Diwali celebrations in Punjab. Diwali mithai and Diwali gifts almost define the festival. People spruce up for the festivities well before time and decide the kind of Diwali presents they would buy for family and friends.

Satisfied? Now? Who Are These People?
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  Yesterday 4:05 PM
One of the first people I met was "satisfied," but she'd also been drinking that afternoon and wouldn't let me use her name. (I directed her to the closest bar.) Later I found a really sweet couple satisfied with the way things are going in America, because they live in Canada. Lynda Race, of Arlington, Va., who is "almost 50," boiled it down: "I love America. Where else would you be more satisfied?" Clip Song

Where is my money?
dakotayii
by dakotayii  10-11-2008    1
"It's in people's minds," Shiller explains. "We're just recording a measure of what people think the stock market is worth. What the people who are willing to trade today — who are very, very few people — are actually trading at. So we're just extrapolating that and thinking, well, maybe that's what everyone thinks it's worth." Shiller uses the example of an appraiser who values a house at $350,000, a week after saying it was worth $400,000. "In a sense, $50,000 just disappeared when he said that," he said. "But it's all in the mind." While the money in your pocket is unlikely to just vanish into thin air, the money you could have had, if only you'd sold your house or drained your stock-heavy mutual funds a year ago, most certainly can. "You can't enjoy the benefits of your 401(k) if it's disappeared," Jorgenson explains. "If you had it all in financial stocks and they've all gone down by 80 percent — sorry! That is a permanent loss because those folks aren't coming back.

Bush Denounces 'Dungeon' of Cuba
thisnamecantbetaken

You'd think Bush was speaking of his own dictatorial reign, eh? "Our great nation that believes in human rights and human dignity, blah, blah, blah..." Hahahaha! What a joke! Tell that to the people of Iraq or Afghanistan or the people wasting away in Gitmo! I'd bet Castro's popularity ratings are higher than yours! Bush, why don't you just STFU? Fix your own country, who is "being repressed by a handful of elites" first, before trying to impose your twisted version of "freedom", on everyone else! Lift the embargo. The age of the red scare is dead and gone. It's the red, white and blue scare, most of the world is concerned about these days...SIR!

It’s a Democratic scandal from beginning to end, and the American people deserve to know it.”

The Reality of Ayers
oscarrob
by oscarrob  10-10-2008
There is a quote from a movie and book whose title escapes me "The past is like a foreign country. People do things differently there." To people who grew up in the 60s and 70s although people who did what Ayers did were wrong and on the fringes, we understand the anger. Think of people's anger today at terrorism and remember that many were that angry at the US government. Think of parents who wouldn't let there children watch the news because of the death and destruction that came every day. Think of riots at political conventions and in the streets of cities across America. Think of the fear of nuclear attack from a volatile and powerful Russia. What Ayers did was wrong and should, by all rights have been punished. It was not, however, today.

McCain and Palin Can No Longer Be Excused
oscarrob

That’s right – evil. Not just wrong. Not just bad. Not just politics. Exploiting otherwise decent people and using their fears, pain and frustration to unleash them on others with different names or different skin colors or different religious beliefs is evil. That’s not what American politicians do. That’s what Adolf Hitler did. And he did it when people were afraid and angry and losing their jobs and their life savings.

I'm not even going to mention how wrong these people are regarding their political arguments. Why are people who are obviously not at work themselves deriding other people for not being at work? Seriously? That's just stupid. I wish I could feel more pity for these people since they are so obviously trapped in their own ignorance, fear and hatred. Really, where does that come from? Palin eats hate and winks while playing to the cameras, but McCain should be ashamed that he has fostered this.

If the Economy Can't Break Down America This Will
Maxwell_Smart
by Maxwell_Smart  10-9-2008    1
I do not know when people will find out when we have both domestic and foreign enemies, but the time is quickly running out. The broken economy is basically freezing the majority of the people. I can see it now; unconstitutional steps will be taken against the people to "solve" the problems and troops will be here to manage those that rightfully resist such rebellion against our founding principles. I fear it will be bloody. "Educate and inform the whole mass of the people... They are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty." ~ Thomas Jefferson

The "people who should be shot" are the morons at NBC who are discriminatory in their censorship of humor. Its not like there is a lot done at the expense of the democrats/liberals.

The Health Care Issue
monstersmom
by monstersmom  10-7-2008    1
So what would happen? The good news, such as it is, is that more people would buy individual insurance. Indeed, the total number of uninsured Americans might decline marginally under the McCain plan — although many more Americans would be without insurance than under the Obama plan. But the people gaining insurance would be those who need it least: relatively healthy Americans with high incomes. Why? Because insurance companies want to cover only healthy people, and even among the healthy only those able to pay a lot in addition to their tax credit would be able to afford coverage (remember, it’s a $5,000 credit, but the average family policy actually costs more than $12,000). Meanwhile, the people losing insurance would be those who need it most: lower-income workers who wouldn’t be able to afford individual insurance even with the tax credit, and Americans with health problems whom insurance companies won’t cover.
