Scientists to study synthetic telepathy
Mohir
by Mohir  8-15-2008
The brain-computer interface would use a noninvasive brain imaging technology like electroencephalography to let people communicate thoughts to each other. For example, a soldier would “think” a message to be transmitted and a computer-based speech recognition system would decode the EEG signals. The decoded thoughts, in essence translated brain waves, are transmitted using a system that points in the direction of the intended target. “Such a system would require extensive training for anyone using it to send and receive messages,” D’Zmura says. “Initially, communication would be based on a limited set of words or phrases that are recognized by the system; it would involve more complex language and speech as the technology is developed further.”

Reactivating Forgotten Languages: How to Catch Up
madame travels
by madame travels  8-10-2008    2
Vis-Ed (www.vis-ed.com) compiles its sets of flashcards from word frequency lists and includes sample phrases for usage. I begin flashcards after three or four days in-country. The sooner you decide to reactivate languages when needed, instead of maintaining them for an unspecified time in the future, the more leisure time you will have and the less diluted your language abilities will be when you need them. Don't fear losing languages if you've attained real fluency. They're just in temporary storage with the covers pulled over them.

Profiles of Terrorists
RaiseClip
by RaiseClip  6-22-2008
If the shoe fits, wear it. The best way to know who is a terrorist or not is to ask the victim. It is taboo to label US soldiers as terrorist, but that is exactly what they are trained to do - terrorism. High tech at that. If any army, for ANY reason did these things to Americans, we know what they would be called and we know what our LEGITIMATE response would be: resist, resist, resist.

How Rock Band saved my marriage
gingembre
by gingembre  6-10-2008    1
Funny stuff from Rachel Shukert! a bit more: "noise-canceling headphones. You could lock Rush Limbaugh, Phyllis Schlafly and Mullah Omar in a room together with a stack of Hustlers and 10 ounces of meth, and they couldn't come up with anything more misogynist. I storm back to my desk and type the phrases "my husband" "addicted" "video games" "HELP" into the search engine. Hundreds of links appear. I click on the first one, a Christian counseling Web site, where a desperate woman named Tiffany, whose husband plays video games nine to 11 hours a day, is reminded by the nonaccredited Christian counselor that man is master of her dominion and tells her to pray to Jesus to restore her husband's love. I have already prayed to the Jewish God for guidance, and the Jewish God, as he has done for millions of Jewish wives since time immemorial, advised me to rip my husband's headphones off his head and scream at him for never putting his leftovers back in the fridge."

20 Words That Spam Filters Kill
boozich
by boozich  5-24-2008    2
have two choices when it comes to beating the filters. One is to avoid using these words and phrases altogether. .. hard to do second choice is to disguise these words and phrases in clever ways by inserting keyboard symbols within them and/or replacing a letter in them with a symbol. The trick is not to make it too cryptic...use "fr*ee" for free.. the points this tactic costs, penalize's you much less than using the words and phrases themselves. It's not a perfect solution. It's a great idea to test how YOUR e-zine stacks up before you send it out. The good news is you can do this for FREE. Lyris' Content Checker (http://www.lyris.com/contentchecker/) tells you how your e-zine ranks in Spam Assassin. All you do is copy your e-zine text and paste it into the box on their site..report will tell you exactly which words are costing you points. you should only be concerned if your score is over 5 points. If so, you can either delete those words or disguise them

Learn to speak Italian
madame travels
by madame travels  5-7-2008
I practiced along with this podcast in preparation for a trip to Italy. I am not yet fluent, however, learning key phrases helped me to communicate with Italians whom I found were very forgiving when I mangled their language. In fact, my attempts were often appreciated. The podcast hosts are native Italians.
