Does President of SEIU Have Preferential Access To White House?
merrie
by merrie  11-1-2009
But you can't automatically disqualify an entry because of a large number of visitors: Stern was among the 393 guests at the White House's St. Patrick's Day event. As far as I can tell, THE Andrew Stern was the top outside visitor to the White House with approximately 20 visits, or about three visits per month, including four relatively small meetings with the president and a dozen with other White House staffers. Stern has openly bragged about the SEIU's $61 million investment in Barack Obama. It certainly bought him a lot of access. Update: And while we're on the subject of the SEIU, here's an interesting entry: On March 3, ACORN spokesman Scott Levenson met with White House political affairs director Patrick Gaspard, who came to the White House from SEIU. Unsurprising, given the groups' close ties. I wonder what they talked about. 10/30

Chicago’s “Good Times” Canceled: DynOmite!
merrie
by merrie  10-5-2009
All I have to say is, where the hell were our international protocol and intelligence teams? Why didn’t someone over at the State Department tell us about this Danish policy before we put everything on the line to bring the Olympic games to the capital of Pay-To-Play cities? We just assumed that we would be treated to the same fawning adulation and deference we get in the USA: the country that invented free speech. We arrived with soaring expectations, only to have the whole thing blow up in our face. Thanks, State, once again. I’m beginning to think that Hillary didn’t really want that job. Insults are under threat in many countries. The World Press Freedom Committee earlier this year published a survey, "The Right to Offend, Shock or Disturb," which details how laws against insults are being used to squelch free speech, including opposition to the government. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB20001424052748704471504574451712299324476.html

This won’t just be a continuation of the tour we just completed. We will be having a lot of special surprises and additions as we grow this effort " and continue the fight against government-run healthcare, Cap & Trade, bailouts, out-of-control deficit spending and the growth in the size and intrusiveness of government. We’ll be publishing the specific itinerary and schedule in the coming days at our website: www.TeaPartyExpress.org For now, here’s the route we’ve planned out " so mark your calendars, spread the news to your friends, and get ready to rock America! If Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid thought that after 9/12 we’d just go away and give up well then we have some bad news for them. We’re back, better than ever, and determined to TAKE OUR COUNTRY BACK! Countdown to Judgment Day ----border-to-border, coast-to-coast --- 1 year ahead of the November 2010 congressional elections

A Precious Gift for Lovers of Literature
Socratoad

The Paris Review Interview Archive "Since 1953, when the first issue of the magazine appeared with an interview of E. M. Forster, our Q&A encounters with the great writers of our times have come to be recognized as a sort of literary genre unto themselves: the Paris Review interview. More than fifty years—and more than three hundred interviews—later, the archive continues to grow with each new issue of the magazine. In November 2006, the first volume of a four-book set of The Paris Review Interviews was celebrated by reviewers across the English-speaking world. In tandem with this publishing project, we offer here online a complete index of every interview ever published, searchable by author and by date—as well as a substantial sampling of the archive’s finest interviews, posted in their entirety. Taken together, these conversations with novelists, poets, playwrights, essayists, biographers, journalists, and critics constitute what Salman Rushdie calls “the finest available inqui

How Chuck Darwin made it from reception to the corner office
dgreplay
by dgreplay  9-10-2009
Thought this was a very colorful piece and worth the quick read at the source. It was written by a long time publishing exec who provides a personal view into the evolution of an industry caught smack in the middle of a technology and media revolution. Having read a number of insightful posts recently (here on Amplify) regarding magazine industry's struggle to bridge traditional and new media, this particular story resonated with me. I wonder if any old school mag publishing execs are still the decision makers. If so, do they realize Mr. Darwin is still sitting in their corner office...

Conservative George Will calls for Afghanistan pull-out
masbury
by masbury  8-31-2009    2
Defense Secretary Robert Gates was asked Monday by Peter Cook of Bloomberg TV: “Are we winning in Afghanistan?” “I think it's a mixed picture in Afghanistan,” Gates replied. “I think that there aren’t too many people with too rosy a view of what's going on in Afghanistan. I think there are many challenges. But I think some of the gloom and doom is somewhat overdrawn as well. … I think that there are some positive developments. But there is no question our casualties are up and there's no question we have a very tough fight in front of us, a lot of challenges.” Read more: http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0809/26628.html#ixzz0Pocw7LWI

Quietly, last month. I missed this one. Have there been others since? Likely to be more journalistic outlets indebted to the Democrats who keep them afloat. Why not pay the press for their favorable propaganda?

Conservative Books On Top, But NYT Concludes Marx is “back in vogue”
merrie
by merrie  8-21-2009    2
Always count on the Fishwrap of Record to have its finger on the pulse of America! *** Via Christian Toto at Human Events: Marji Ross, president and publisher of Regnery Publishing, isn’t surprised by the newspaper’s stance against these like-minded books. “Very rarely do they review conservative books,” Ross says. “What they sometimes do is mention a book that is conservative on their “Inside the List” feature. It’s a way to defend themselves against the accusation they ignore these books.” The New York Times did see fit to print reviews of major liberal books from Michael Moore (Dude, Where’s My Country?), Eric Alterman (What Liberal Media?) and Al Franken (Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them) but has yet to examine the aforementioned right-leaning bestsellers. Having one’s book reviewed in The New York Times meant something up until recently. “Traditionally, most publishers and authors are very eager to get in the New York Times to review their books," Ross say
