Almonds boost weight loss
Fast T friend
by Fast T friend  7-20-2008
According to Wien, “The weight-loss benefits of eating almonds came as something of a surprise, since the study was originally designed to evaluate the cholesterol-lowering effects of almonds. As it turned out, the dieters who ate almonds lost more weight than would be expected if they were taking prescription diet pills.”

Scientology recruiting via facebook?
Djiezes
by Djiezes  7-21-2008
I was playing poker on facebook, & suddenly realized the advertisement on the left pointed to a vacancy for the company U-Man. Normally, I wouldn't click through, but the name U-Man grabbed my attention since I happen to know it's a scientology affiliated organization "selling their Tech" in management circles. Are they're trying to "get some raw meat into the shop"? And it just so happens I'm looking for work right now. What do you think, should I apply? Should I mention that I graduated doing thesis on Scientology? Sure they must be interested ... ;D Also: props to facebook for directing this ad to me. That's some pretty nifty targeted advertising.

Let me tell you about last night
willhelm
by willhelm  7-20-2008
I was a Zeppelin fan in my youth and I still pull those tunes out when I want to kick-start my rebel side. These days my musical tastes fall more in line with contemporary jazz, but there really is not a focal point. I like it all - blugrass, folk, 70s and 80s rock, some country, enya.. you name it. Last night was a post-modern mix of the most unlikely kind. The raw voice of Plant with the subtle sweetness and brilliantly soft sounding voice of Alison Krauss. It was quite a show. Bluegrass mixed with a Zeppelin twist and a folksy pop (speaking of post-modern) sound weaving in and out. I loved it. Most of all I just love Alison. Last night was supposed to be their finale performance but I hear they have added dates and are planning a new album.

Can you imagine if Big Pharma had pills that you took 3 times a month to get the same benefit? They be hailing it as the latest "miracle" drug. Oh wait. What am I saying? They'd never prescribed something only 3 times a month! They want us all on several pills several times a day, forever.

Corporate Personhood
katsteevns
by katsteevns  7-13-2008
he courts destroyed the semblance of equal protection under law because there is no way even an individual billionaire can approximate the raw power of these large corporations with their privileged immunities, and their control over technology, capital and labor. Right now it is the reverse. The sovereignty of the people is subordinated to the sovereignty of the giant multinational corporations. Corporations were chartered in the early nineteenth century by state governments to be our servants, not our masters.

Paper Bags or Plastic Bags? Everything You Need to Know
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  7-9-2008    6
So, while it's good to have the alternative (and to recognize the innovation it represents), bioplastics aren't quite ready to save us from the paper or plastic debate. Paper bags or plastic bags: the conclusion Both paper and plastic bags require lots and lots of resources and energy, and proper recycling requires due diligence from both consumer and municipal waste collector or private recycling company, so there are a lot of variables that can lead to low recycling rates. Ultimately, neither paper nor plastic bags are the best choice; we think choosing reusable canvas bags instead is the way to go. From an energy standpoint, according to this Australian study, canvas bags are 14 times better than plastic bags and 39 times better than paper bags, assuming that canvas bags get a good workout and are used 500 times during their life cycle. Happy shopping!

And through it all you avoided repercussions. Even losing GOP House and Senate majorities hasn’t slowed you down much. There's so much raw evidence to impeach your ass that it would be as easy as Dick Cheney shooting a lawyer in the face. The rap sheet is a mile long. Yet you remain 100 percent unscathed, threatened by nothing more than a pretzel getting stuck in your craw. That's amazing. My peasant hat is off to you.

Edible Weeds
Socratoad
by Socratoad  7-2-2008    2
  * Never ingest a weed without first being certain that it is an edible plant! Books and the Web can help you with identification of edible weeds; but better yet, contact your local wildflower society or similar source for expert guidance. * Just because a particular plant is an "edible weed," that doesn't mean that every part of it should be eaten. In some instances of "edible weeds," just the root or leaf, e.g., should be eaten. * Likewise, some "edible weeds" must be cooked first -- never eat them raw!

Incredible inconsistencies! An Outbreak is local event; when we calling it Multi-State, this is already nationwide Epidemic. 810 cases in 36 states in 3 months are Nationwide Epidemic? Common! What are you talking about?:) And now is the trouble with repacking... To tell the true, that plum tomatoes are really disgusting: tasteless, resinlike and even oily when you touch them. Where it's from: fashion hydroponic method of growing or just microbial film from those handlers-repackers? In this particular case it make sense to wash these veggies with detergent. In case you've got strong decision not trowing them away from very beginning and keep them for yourself. ;)

NASA Peculiar Thermometer: Painting By Numbers
merrie
by merrie  6-24-2008    2
..10 second video...UAH Satellite Temperatures March, 2008 - looks cool Not surprisingly, the missing areas in Canada and Africa were cold. The NASA data thus becomes disproportionately weighted towards warm areas - particularly in the northern hemisphere. As can be seen in the UAH satellite map above, the warm areas actually made up a relatively small percentage of the planet. The vast majority of the earth had normal temperatures or below. Given that NASA has lost track of a number of large cold regions, it is understandable that their averages are on the high side. Additionally, NASA reports their global temperature measurements within one one-hundredth of a degree. This is a classic mathematics error, since they have no data from 20 per cent of the earth's land area. The reported precision is much greater than the error bar - a mistake which has caused many a high school student to fail their exams.
