POPSScientology recruiting via facebook? I was playing poker on facebook, & suddenly realized the advertisement on the left pointed to a vacancy for the company U-Man. Normally, I wouldn't click through, but the name U-Man grabbed my attention since I happen to know it's a scientology affiliated organization "selling their Tech" in management circles. Are they're trying to "get some raw meat into the shop"? And it just so happens I'm looking for work right now. What do you think, should I apply? Should I mention that I graduated doing thesis on Scientology? Sure they must be interested ... ;D Also: props to facebook for directing this ad to me. That's some pretty nifty targeted advertising.

POPSLet me tell you about last night I was a Zeppelin fan in my youth and I still pull those tunes out when I want to kick-start my rebel side. These days my musical tastes fall more in line with contemporary jazz, but there really is not a focal point. I like it all - blugrass, folk, 70s and 80s rock, some country, enya.. you name it. Last night was a post-modern mix of the most unlikely kind. The raw voice of Plant with the subtle sweetness and brilliantly soft sounding voice of Alison Krauss. It was quite a show. Bluegrass mixed with a Zeppelin twist and a folksy pop (speaking of post-modern) sound weaving in and out. I loved it. Most of all I just love Alison. Last night was supposed to be their finale performance but I hear they have added dates and are planning a new album.

POPSAlmonds boost weight loss According to Wien, “The weight-loss benefits of eating almonds came as something of a surprise, since the study was originally designed to evaluate the cholesterol-lowering effects of almonds. As it turned out, the dieters who ate almonds lost more weight than would be expected if they were taking prescription diet pills.”

POPSPass The RawBroccoli; Pass On The Croutons Can you imagine if Big Pharma had pills that you took 3 times a month to get the same benefit? They be hailing it as the latest "miracle" drug. Oh wait. What am I saying? They'd never prescribed something only 3 times a month! They want us all on several pills several times a day, forever.

POPSTranscript of the Pope's Homily at World Youth Day For some reason I decided to come out of clipmarks retirement with this clip. It just made me chuckle. "It starts off a little clumsy, but it makes as much sense as anything I've ever heard uttered by a clergyman by the end."

POPSThe First Diamond made from an Umbilical Cord This is the 'Jessica Diamond'. Started in January 2008 and created in June (it usually takes about 15 weeks). The process uses the carbon extracted from the cord and the diamond is a real raw diamond when it comes out, it is then cut and polished as diamonds have been over centuries.

POPSCorporate Personhood he courts destroyed the semblance of equal protection under law because there is no way even an individual billionaire can approximate the raw power of these large corporations with their privileged immunities, and their control over technology, capital and labor. Right now it is the reverse. The sovereignty of the people is subordinated to the sovereignty of the giant multinational corporations. Corporations were chartered in the early nineteenth century by state governments to be our servants, not our masters.

POPSPaper Bags or Plastic Bags? Everything You Need to Know So, while it's good to have the alternative (and to recognize the innovation it represents), bioplastics aren't quite ready to save us from the paper or plastic debate. Paper bags or plastic bags: the conclusion Both paper and plastic bags require lots and lots of resources and energy, and proper recycling requires due diligence from both consumer and municipal waste collector or private recycling company, so there are a lot of variables that can lead to low recycling rates. Ultimately, neither paper nor plastic bags are the best choice; we think choosing reusable canvas bags instead is the way to go. From an energy standpoint, according to this Australian study, canvas bags are 14 times better than plastic bags and 39 times better than paper bags, assuming that canvas bags get a good workout and are used 500 times during their life cycle. Happy shopping!
