The Chinese philosopher Xun Zi said that human nature is not particularly good, but he went on to argue that doesn't mean that we shouldn't try to make it better. Too many people resign themselves to say "that's just the way things are" because that's easier than challenging their own beliefs. Before we can be an agent for change, our ideas must be relentlessly refined in the furnace of critical introspection. Follow the link to read all these cognitive hazards, and see where you find them in your life!

pokkets

We often don't know if we want something until we get it, and then find it wasn't what we wanted. Through that discovery, we can start to believe we really wanted something else, and the chase continues, turning goals into hurdles. Often confusing improvement with change. Perhaps another angle could be learning what we need to, but also trying to improve what we can already do well, without neglecting the opportunities to learn from what we can consider to be failures. We can change situations, but changing who we are may not be possible, and if it is we don't have the foresight to make it a likely improvement.

Does Time really Slow Down in a Crisis?
einbar
by einbar  11-8-2008    7
Eagleman added this illusion "is related to the phenomenon that time seems to speed up as you grow older. When you're a child, you lay down rich memories for all your experiences; when you're older, you've seen it all before and lay down fewer memories. Therefore, when a child looks back at the end of a summer, it seems to have lasted forever; adults think it zoomed by." And though the results of this study can lead towards disorders linked with timing, such as schizophrenia, Eagleman believes "it's really about understanding the virtual reality machinery that we're trapped in,"Our brain constructs this reality for us that, if we look closely, we can find all these strange illusions in. The fact that we're now seeing this with how we perceive time is new."

The Clay Model - The Illusion of Life
111JustinMN
by 111JustinMN  11-28-2008    10
A funny and insightful look into the reality of life, from the spiritual point of view. With deep humanity and humor, Belzebuub talks about the illusory nature of life and the spiritual reality behind it using the analogy of a clay model. At the same time, the video is deeply serious and pressing for each person. Does it resonate with you? Have you ever felt like you were living in a clay model?

I have found this to be true ... even at my beloved Clipmarks
NonStatQuo
by NonStatQuo  3-1-2008    19
I have stayed away from clipmarks from a while, in order to facilitate a more balanced life. I stopped visiting for awhile when I noticed some folks were taking my own opinions to be critiques of them almost personally. This scared me. It said to me that they and I were spending too much time here. Need some real world connection ... when we care more about our invisible friends than the person next door or next to you in the bookstore, it is time to check reality. We don't know each other on clipmarks we only know a portion of the person behind the keyboard. We know what they clip, not who they are.

President Barack Hussein Obama - Reality feels like a dream

I am laughing with joy and crying. I've cried so much, even during McCain's speech. Another dream fulfilled - the dream since I was eight years old. I wish my mother was alive. She ran away from the Jim Crow south shortly after her first cousin, my cousin, a man named Huey was tortured and lynched. Thanks everyone who helped make this dream come true. I love you all.

Now here's something we know a thing or two about :). The thing they don't realize is that the true power is in enabling everyone to aggregate and filter the news and information for each other. It's not something that the major media companies need to do for us...we're doing it already! But then again, we all know that already don't we ;)

The myth of the self
einbar
by einbar  3-21-2009    2
"WHAT is the self? One answer is that it is the diamond in the rough that is you, the unique, immutable and indestructible jewel that makes each person who they are, the being amidst the becoming, the unfluxable within the flux.Kant called it the Transcendental Ego, which stands behind experience as the condition of its possibility. An alternative view endorsed by Buddha, Heraclitus, John Locke, David Hume and William James is that the self does not exist."
