POPSAn American Divide by Jonah Goldberg
It's that conviction more than anything else that is driving their push for ObamaCare. The notion that health care is a right is an old one, with deep roots in socialist and progressive thought. It achieved its highest expression in FDR's 1944 address to Congress. The president insisted that the old Bill of Rights had run its course, and the new industrial age required new rights. These rights included a guaranteed good job, a good home and, naturally, good medical care. Roosevelt said that opposition to this sweeping transformation of America made you a fascist. If "history were to repeat itself and we were to return to the so-called 'normalcy' of the 1920's, then it is certain that even though we shall have conquered our enemies on the battlefields abroad, we shall have yielded to the spirit of Fascism here at home." Keep in mind that the 1920s was a decade of roaring economic growth. The return to "normalcy" FDR referred to was the return to a more limited form ....

POPSLegal Experts Must Opine On War Crimes I still wonder that under what authority,Afghanistan can give a blanket immunity to the invaders for war crime.Does Geneva Convention has such options wherein, the war crime laws can be abrogated like that? I doubt it very much but if is so then it is highly damaging to rights of smaller and weaker nations.

POPSMore States bucking Federal control “Who is the sovereign, the state or the federal government?”...Many states arevnow claiming that the federal government is consistently overstepping its bounds. Many seem to have forgotten that we're a union of 50 small little countries. Tired of being dictated to on matters for which the federal government has no constitutional authority, states are beginning to assert themselves.

POPSHot Springs National Park Trails Mar 15 2010 The sky was bright as I headed into the park, waiting for the sun to crest the tops of the highest trees. Although light was beginning to spread out on the ground as the sun shone between the trees, it was still twilight up in the highest branches. On the Tufa Terrace five different squirrels were foraging for nuts hidden in the leaves. On several occasions there were disagreements over area rights for nut hunting. While chaos ensued below a single Squirrel sat high in a tree enjoying a breakfast feast. It was perfect start to my morning in the park.

POPS"Deadly Delivery" - Maternal Deaths in U.S. Have Doubled The CDC analysis shows that deaths during pregnancy and childbirth have doubled for all U.S. women in the past 20 years. In 1987, there were 6.6 deaths for every 100,000 pregnancies. The number of deaths had climbed to 13.3 per 100,000 in 2006, the last year for which figures were available. "Women's health is at risk," said Strauss. "We spend the most, and yet women are more likely to die than in 40 other countries. And that disconnect is what makes it such a problem."

POPSAn Important Distinction: Democracy versus Republic The first genuine and soundly founded Republic in all history was the one created by the first genuine Constitution, which was adopted by the people of Massachusetts in 1780 after being framed for their consideration by a specially chosen Constitutional Convention. (As previously noted, the so-called "Constitutions" adopted by some States in 1776 were mere Acts of Legislatures, not genuine Constitutions.) That Constitutional Convention of Massachusetts was the first successful one ever held in the world; although New Hampshire had earlier held one unsuccessfully - it took several years and several successive conventions to produce the New Hampshire Constitution of 1784.

POPSGovernment HealthCare is Not About Health Care, It's About Government by Mark Steyn
and then maybe Canadians will get mad and elect a conservative government that will end this nonsense." Makes perfect sense. Except that Canada already has a Conservative government under a Conservative prime minister, and the very head of the "human rights" commission investigating me was herself the Conservative appointee of a Conservative minister of justice. Makes no difference. Once the state swells to a certain size, the people available to fill the ever-expanding number of government jobs will be statists " sometimes hard-core Marxist statists, sometimes social-engineering multiculti statists, sometimes fluffily "compassionate" statists, but always statists. The short history of the post-war welfare state is that you don't need a president-for-life if you've got a bureaucracy-for-life: The people can elect "conservatives," as the Germans have done and the British are about to do, and the Left is mostly relaxed about it because, in all but exceptional cases ...
