We DO Need More Domestic Energy...BUT...
cmstratton
by cmstratton  9-2-2008
Bush is absolutely right (I can't believe I'm saying that) - we absolutely do need to focus on more domestic energy production to reduce and ultimately eliminate out reliance on the Middle East. He's absolutely wrong however (now that's more like it) when he says we need to get that additional domestic energy by drilling for more oil off-shore. Pretty much all major scientific research - and even a great deal of the public - agree oil is not the answer to our energy crisis. There is only so much oil and any additional drilling will be far outnumbered by the increase in usage that will have occurred when we finally get that new oil online. Could drilling for new oil help lower gas/fuel prices? Sure it could temporarily. But that would only slightly delay the inevitable. We NEED to reduce our energy consumption until we can find alternative and more abundant sources of clean energy to meet our needs.

McCain vs UN and the American people
spirithiker
by spirithiker  8-25-2008    1
McCain wants to throw off the "shackles" of the UN that prevents the U.S. from becoming a more powerful and dominant presence in the world. This coming from a man who clearly doesn't understand foreign policy and firmly believes that "might is right". We cannot afford to allow this fool to become our president.

John McCain, Friend of Monopolies
Wisco
by Wisco  8-21-2008
I think there are two reasons McCain invokes Teddy Roosevelt. 1. Roosevelt wasn't a Republican in the modern sense, but a Republican in the original sense -- i.e., a progressive. McCain hopes to signal some that his "maverick" label actually means something. 2. Teddy Roosevelt is the one face on Mt. Rushmore that Americans know the least about. In the end, I'd say it's more 2 than 1.

We Like Ike? Not At Denver's Brown Palace Hotel and Spa
merrie
by merrie  8-20-2008    1
Eisenhower Presidential Suite Dumped Renamed Barack Obama Suite Shannon Dexheimer, public relations manager for The Brown Palace Hotel and Spa, recently explained that the reason for renaming the suite, was that the hotel, “wanted to do it to symbolize honoring him as the candidate for the Democrats, and honoring the fact that we played such a huge role 100 years ago when this convention (Democrat) was here last." The hotel has four named suites, three presidential suites, the Eisenhower, Ronald Reagan, and Teddy Roosevelt, and a suite named for the Beatles in honor of their one night stay in the hotel in August, 1966. There are also several unnamed suites on the eighth and ninth floors of the hotel. Why take a chance at angering half the voting public, by making the switch? Only the management at the Brown Palace can answer that, but the smart thing would have been to temporarily turn one of several other unnamed suites into the Obama Suite.

Newly Released Federal Documents Reveals Julia Child Among Spies
merrie
by merrie  8-15-2008    1
They studied military plans, created propaganda, infiltrated enemy ranks and stirred resistance among foreign troops. Among the more than 35,000 OSS personnel files are applications, commendations and handwritten notes identifying young recruits who, like Child, Goldberg and Berg, earned greater acclaim in other fields — Arthur Schlesinger Jr., a historian and special assistant to President Kennedy; Sterling Hayden, a film and television actor whose work included a role in "The Godfather"; and Thomas Braden, an author whose "Eight Is Enough" book inspired the 1970s television series. Other notables identified in the files include John Hemingway, son of author Ernest Hemingway; Quentin and Kermit Roosevelt, sons of President Theodore Roosevelt, and Miles Copeland, father of Stewart Copeland, drummer for the band The Police. The release of the OSS personnel files uncloaks one of the last secrets from the short-lived wartime intelligence agency.

Operation Brimstone
sahara
by sahara  7-23-2008
Operation Brimstone boasts two striking features: 1. It will include for the first time units of the US Expeditionary Combat Command, who are trained to operate in shallow coastal waters and rivers, such as the coastal waters of the Persian Gulf and the small islands around its chokepoint, the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian Revolutionary Guards marine units are posted on these islands. The international force will have to control the islands to ensure oil shipping freed passage out to world markets. 2. The Roosevelt’s decks will for the first time host French Rafale fighter jets which will share space with US warplanes, while the only French carrier Charles de Gaulle undergoes maintenance.

GOP Convention Lacks Enthusiasm
Wisco

I wonder if they'll realize that forced enthusiasm looks even worse than no enthusiasm? The piece also tells us that while Obama can expect good coverage during bona fide swing state Colorado's DNC, McCain's down double-digits in Minnesota -- happy photo ops aren't nearly as likely as big protests.

Travel Writing, Courtesy of Uncle Sam
Elisabeth Eaves
by Elisabeth Eaves  7-15-2008
I knew that Roosevelt's New Deal created government jobs for blue collar workers. But who knew that travel writers also benefited -- including the likes of Saul Bellow, Zora Neale Hurston, and Eudora Welty? My capitalist tendencies notwithstanding, I can't help but be charmed by writer-employment schemes. Doubly charming (to me anyway): This piece is about my former home state of Washington.

Obama Turns FDR Upside Down
merrie
by merrie  7-12-2008    1
assuming the same life expectancy. But the principle remains that as workers’ wages rise so do the taxes they pay, and so do the benefits they will get from the system. Although the formula connecting benefits to tax payments or “contributions” has evolved slightly over time, it still adheres to this basic message. Today, what Social Security terms a “low-wage” worker will pay (in present value terms) $77,197 over his or her lifetime and get $112,261 in benefits. A median-wage worker earning $42,000 will pay $171,550 and get back $187,085. A “high-wage” worker making $67,000 will pay $274,480 and get back $245,085. Sen. Obama would do away with this principle by requiring higher-end workers to pay taxes without getting any extra benefits linked to their higher contributions. This would be a big step toward turning Social Security from a contributory pension scheme into just another welfare program.

The symbolic blunder - symbolic in many ways
willhelm
by willhelm  6-27-2008
How timely. I recently clipped some things about FDR's NRA. Apparently, I am not the only one that notices the blatant attempt to inspire a reactionary movement to the 1930's fascism. More from article: "The NRA attempted to "organize" the U.S. economy from the largest corporations to the smallest Mom n' Pop store. Businesses were encouraged to sign up with the proviso that they would be able to write their own rules for their industries, effectively turning them into cartels. Member businesses were allowed to place the Blue Eagle in their windows, along with the slogan "We Do Our Part". "
