Three Orphaned Lion Cubs Being Bottle-Fed By Zookeepers
merrie
by merrie  7-15-2008    5
White lions are regarded as a rarity in the wild. In captivity, however, it seems a different story. In fact three white cubs were born to another lioness at the zoo in Schloss Holte-Stukenbrock, south-west of Hamburg, at exactly the same time. She however, was happy to raise her litter herself. Fortunately these two-week-old white lion cubs are in good hands with the zoo keepers adopting the maternal role. In captivity, both male and female lions, who are unusually social compared to other cats, can live for over 20 years. The German public has a soft spot for orphaned animals. Knut, the first polar bear born in Berlin Zoo for 30 years, became a national celebrity after his mother rejected him. Life, however, hasn't been easy for the bear who attracts at least 200 visitors a day. He is said to have become addicted to human attention. 'Knut is a problem bear who has become addicted to human beings,' German animal rights activist Frank Albrecht said.

New Insights Into Sibling Rivalry and Brith Order
jatfla
by jatfla  5-19-2007    3
Birth order has always fascinated me. I am an "only" and these people are doubly driven to perfectionism and pleasing. With three children, and having read a lot about the characteristics of the birth orders, I have found the standard assertions quite interesting and correct. Of course, there are always exceptions, but this is so amazing when it comes to personality and characteristics.

Fetus in Fetu
dakotayii
by dakotayii  3-27-2008    3
How is this possible? Bhagat had a bizarre and extremely rare condition called fetus in fetu. What happens is that when the twin feti are in the womb, one gets absorbed by, or trapped inside, the other. This happens very early in pregnancy. One twins grows normally while the trapped lives on as a parasite, leaching off its sibling’s blood supply

Multi-Level Marketing Mike Huckabee
merrie
by merrie  12-30-2007    1
At least a thousand people crammed into a ballroom at the Sheraton Hotel, many of them saying they'd turned out strictly to hear the former Arkansas governor and ordained Baptist minister now soaring in the polls. Later, organizer Mike Waechter said the people who put the event together know each other through Quixtar, but that the company neither sponsored the event nor endorsed Huckabee. He said Alticor, the Quixtar and Amway parent whose founders have a history of conservative activism, also wasn't implying any endorsement. In the Sheraton ballroom, many of the attendees, Quixtar participants and other invitees, were clearly behind Huckabee. Several said they plan to raise their hands for him when the Iowa caucuses convene on Thursday. And they didn't want to pass up the chance to hear him speak.

W.H.O. to investigate Pakistan bird flu
pokkets
by pokkets  12-16-2007
The strain H5N1, was believed to have infected four brothers, two of whom have died. The main concern, is that only one of the two brothers that died worked at the farm where the disease was found. The details are confusing with conflicting reports, but so far the fatal cases of bird flu, as far as doctors are aware, have been caught directly from birds. They are still on the alert for a case of human to human transmission. If such a variant happens to arise, the transmission will increase, and it will need to be identified quickly and specifically to develop an effective vaccine or treatment.

Scientists clone glow-in the-dark cats

The cats glow due to a gene that is a marker gene, that can show a gene transplant can be possible, before more functional genes are used. The treatments and methods can then also be extended to other species including humans.

Fecal transplants can cure superbug
gingembre
by gingembre  11-15-2007    5
The ends do justify the means when it comes to C. difficile treatment! :D This is really good news for those suffering from the debilitating bacterial infection that has killed thousands of people in the last few years. "The procedure involves getting a close relative of the patient, such as a sibling, to donate several days-worth of stool. Louie tests the stool for diseases such as hepatitis and HIV and then mixes it with saline to create liquid feces. He then administers the stool to the patient through an enema." "Louie said the technique allows good bacteria from the transplanted stool to reduce the number of C. difficile bacteria in the intestines and to restore normal intestinal function." Don't poo-poo the technique.
