POPSBill Maher: New Rules - Look Beyond The Candidates’ Skin Color Cont.... And it’s true, he’s spent his entire life shuffling from one low-paying government job to another. Well, except those years he spent in prison. Typical! And between you and me, he’s not very articulate. Oh, he may have some street smarts, but he’s not what you call an educated man. He freely admits he’s ignorant about the economy. And apparently the only thing his white running mate knows how to do is crank out one baby after another. And now of course, her teenage daughter is pregnant out of wedlock. Because she learns it at home! But that doesn’t mean we should assume all white people are like that, just because so many of them are.

POPSTop Ten Uses For Vinegar. Some good cheap tips here. I have always used vinegar as a fabric softener, (no, there's no smell once the clothes are dry) and as scale remover. It's a good disinfectant too and it cleans stained aluminium. Put a bit in the water when you're washing windows and bling bling, their sparkling shiny and clean. Good for cutting through the muck on car windscreens too. Uhm... what else? Oh yeah, it's really, really cheap, non-toxic, pet- and child friendly, environmentally harmless and good for your health too. :) 10 Health Benefits of Vinegar Grandma knew that her old remedies worked even if she couldn't explain to the scientific world. She knew that diluting vinegar in the ear would help infections due to swimmer's ear. Now, the American Academy of Otolaryngology endorses this remedy. There's something to be said about how smart grandma was.

POPSThe Landscape of Possible Intelligences If we imagine the levels of intelligence as a ladder with unevenly spaced rungs, there may be jumps that some intelligences are not able to complete, or their derivatives are not able to jump. So a type 3 mind may be able to jump up four levels of bootstrapping intelligence, but not five. Since I don't believe intelligence is linear (that is I believe intelligence grows in many dimensions), a better illustration may be to view the problem of bootstrapping super intelligence as navigating across a rugged evolutionary landscape.

POPSToo Dumb To Succeed? "In any case, remember this the next time someone calls for an end to partisanship, for working together to solve the country’s problems. It’s not going to happen — not as long as one of America’s two great parties believes that when it comes to politics, stupidity is the best policy."

POPSLooking for Smarts Between the Genes When it comes to separating humans from other animals, researchers agree that it's what's between the ears that counts most. Indeed, changes in brain-related genes appear to explain the often vast differences between human and chimp cognition. Now scientists have discovered that the spaces between these genes can be just as important.

POPSKids with high IQs grow up to be vegetarians "Vegetarians were more likely to be female, of higher social class and better educated, but IQ was still a significant predictor of being vegetarian after adjustment for these factors, Gale said. "Vegetarian diets are associated with lower cardiovascular disease risk in a number of studies, so these findings suggest that a such a diet may help to explain why children or adolescents with a higher IQ have a lower risk of coronary heart disease as adults," Gale said." Not everyone agrees, of course. But it makes a lot of sense to me.

POPSA Dying Breed This REALLY concerns me. I watched a video called "The Future of Food" a few years back and my concerns are only growing. Granted, I'm just a good old coal miner's daughter from WV baby, and no scientist for sure, but I've got enough people smarts to know that this isn't good.

POPS Clintons Planting For The "Common Good" Democrats would take a "risk" by choosing Barack Obama as their nominee, former President Bill Clinton said, although he said it would be a "miracle" if his wife won the Iowa caucus. Hillary Clinton campaigned in New Hampshire Saturday - where primary voters go to the polls Jan. 8 - including going door to door in Manchester. The New York senator, who just picked up the endorsement of Maine Gov. John Baldacci, hits the road Sunday on a five-day, 99-county barnstorming swing through Iowa.

POPSLog on, drop out, cash in... Top techies who left school "Of course, for every dropout's success story there are untold stories of disappointment and failure. Nathan Ensmenger, a University of Pennsylvania history professor who tracks the Silicon Valley labor market, says youngsters often are lured by high starting salaries and low barriers to entry. But not everyone can hit a startup grand slam, leaving many with fewer options as they try to climb the corporate ladder that quickly tops out for techies without a degree. "If we were shooting a movie of this, there would be a disclaimer at the bottom, 'Do not attempt this at home,' " said Paul Graham, a startup investor and founder of Y Combinator. "It's an extreme example of a fundamental, underlying trend: If you can program, you don't have to play by the rules." "We discourage people from starting startups too young. You're not a loser if you finish college first."

POPSBe a better thinker through the Mentat Wiki Tying together the fictional world of Dune and the real-life powers of the human mind, I came across this site. Mentats are the fictional "human supercomputers", and while this site's design is kind of plain and old (and oddly purple and pink — but who am I to criticize?), there's a trove of info for shaping up your brain cells here.

POPSWhat A Stablefull of The Best Hollywood Scripwriters Buys Clearly, according to our poll, the Forbes '08 Tracker, a stablefull of the best Hollwyood scriptwriters (which Law & Order can clearly command) buys you crediblity, seriousness, good humor, gravitas, and likeability. All critical criteria for presidential candidates -- at least any who really want to be elected. What it may NOT buy you is enough smarts to actually do the job (establish a realistic federal budget, not eviscerate the economy, and encourage foreign investment if not immigration). These criteria only REAL intelligence will get you. Do any candidates have any such traits this year? Stay tuned to Forbes '08 Tracker to find out !! .... --David A. Andelman
