An interactive social mashup site where New Yorkers can research construction sites in their neighborhoods, find current information on safety violations, report street-level observations, and submit news and photos. Very intelligent use of social web technology.

POPSObama's Fair Tax Mr. Warren, a man of the cloth, has done us a great service by asking the candidates to answer a pretty secular question: What kind of income makes an American "rich"? Maybe in the more secular setting of an upcoming debate, one of our nonpastor moderators could ask the candidates the moral question: What specific rate of individual taxation would it take for the rich to be paying their fair share?

POPSHomeland Security Wants The Shirt Off Your Back Things that had to be left out of the clip: "We have notified his company, Paragon, of our position in the matter," Haley said. A message left with Paragon Security was not immediately returned Monday night. Gilbert called the guard's actions "shocking." "As an African-American and a lesbian, I haven't been through one day without facing some sort of discrimination," Gilbert said. Her mother called police after Gilbert was kicked out, but another security guard escorted her to the front of the Social Security line before officers arrived, the Daily News reported. According to a police report, a witness described Gilbert as "peaceful and quiet" before the guard told her to leave.

POPSInvisible People - All the lonely people I saw a tiny bit of this then my mind wandered to how its possible to overcome isolation through the internet for example there are loads of apps for the iphone/ipod touch that have location aware social networking which in a city area the possibility of making connections would be massive I presume. If we could make this type of technology available more widely say in libraries or even community iniatives would could bring more people together and help people from becoming isolated oh and the title's from the beatles song which illustrates the situation (Eleanor Rigby)

POPSFlip Video I received a Flip Mino as a birthday gift last month. I've played around with it, but haven't had a good opportunity to show it off with a post yet. It's SUPER easy and produces good quality videos. If you're looking for a good pocket video cam, but don't want to spend the money for the Mino, take a look at the Flip Ultra. Creative has a knock-off called the Vado on the market that's even less expensive than the Ultra. However, I am sold on Flip Video not only for the quality of the product, but because of the company's social endeavors to make the world a better place. For more information about Flip Video's commitment to social responsibility and non-profits, please visit http://flipvideospotlight.com/

POPSSocial networking gone wild? Is their irrational exuberance in the social networking world these days? A billion dollar price tag for the less technologically savvy site Linked In could hint at such a bubble. Yes it generates revenues already unlike many companies during the dot come heyday. On the flipside, times are ripe for innovative social networking sites built by entrepreneurs, as long as you can attract a following - which is getting harder and harder in the crowded social networking world.

POPSQuotiki: social quotes I've been hoping to find a replacement for BigCite, a nicely designed social quotation site that vanished some time ago. This might be it. Collect, share, tag, and save quotations. Fully Web 2.0-compliant with widgets and all that.

POPSRandom Acts of Kindness Lots of folks have already commented on Zen Habits web site about their willingness to help create a website/service dedicated to this enterprise. I myself do not have the qualifications to contribute to this creation but would certainly participate on such a site. If you or anyone you know could then please check it out and network with those who have said they too would help. Wat an incredible idea whos time is now.

POPSGov. Sarah Palin: On The Issues New Alaska Governor Is Strong Conservative Economy: She supports reducing property taxes and taxes for small businesses to grow the economy. Climate: However, she has been a vocal critic of scientists who suggest that climate change is leading to the decrease in polar bears in Alaska. She has also threatened to sue to have polar bears not listed as a threatened species. Immigration: Being that her state only borders Canada and is thousands of miles from the Mexican border, Palin has not often expressed her views publicly on illegal immigration. Health Care: According to her campaign Web site, Palin supports flexibility in government regulations that allow competition in health care. She believes it will drive down health care costs and reduce the need for government subsidies. Palin also feels patients should have access to full medical billing information. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXzY1FvYpnE YouTube: 10:19

POPSBarack Obama: Leap of Faith
but because they're confused about the roots of his politics. Sen. Obama accumulated his victorious lead early with a liberal coalition willing to vote for him mainly for reasons of faith – upper-middle-class whites, black voters and young idealists -- all attempting to complete the civil-rights promise, answer the post-partisan appeal, or vote against the war and George Bush. His coalition's limitations hit the wall in Ohio. Here Sen. Clinton discovered her Rosie-the-Riveter persona, and it worked. I watched her sell bread-and-butter policy before blue-collar crowds in Youngstown, Akron and Cleveland. She was tremendously good at it. He just wasn't. The Sunday before the Ohio vote, Sen. Obama abandoned Ohio. The way Hillary won in these crucial November swing states may have fatally damaged his candidacy. His problem is that there is nothing in it (biography) to suggest he has spent any significant time thinking about these people other than as a political abstraction.

POPSA New State Of Mind But that view of the neurotransmitter was vastly oversimplified. What wasn’t yet clear was that dopamine is also a profoundly important source of information. It doesn’t merely let us take pleasure in the world; it allows us to understand the world.

POPS The social web - power to the people!!! Oh yes, a truly revolutionary web we are weaving. My hat is off to people in places such as Egypt who brave the potentially dire consequences in order to spread the truth. Their words will hopefully lead to more democratic, free societies in places that have for so long kept their people bottled up.
