POPSIsrael Partnering in Africa Against Terror (IsraelNN.com) Israel is increasing its partnership in Africa, united with factions which are battling fundamentalist Islam. In addition, Israel has reportedly expressed an interest in being the first country to recognize the autonomous province of Somaliland as a country, according to a report in Somaliland's Golis News. Somaliland broke away from Somalia – Kenya's eastern neighbor – in 1991, rebelling against Somalian military dictator Siad Barre.

POPS"The Pacific,": Powerful WW2 Movie I wish I had HBO. The other WW2 movies produced in cooperation between Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg are very impressive: 'Saving Private Ryan,' and the 'Band of Brothers.' Other impressive 'new generation,' war flicks, imo: 'Letters from Iwo Jima," produced by Clint Eastwood, was an astounding view of the Pacific War World 2, from the Japanese side. (and 'Tora, Tora, Tora', good) Patton, no doubt. Paths of Glory, about WW1, a heavy-duty flick. Platoon & Apocalypse Now were powerful films about Vietnam. Black Hawk Down' set in Somalia, leaves an impression. Hurt Locker,' (haven't seen), set in Iraq, won Best Picture and Best Director this year. Gettyburg' about the US Civil War powerful, historical. And the PBS documentary about the Civil War incredible. No American Revolution War flick jumps to mind. Maybe 'cause we'd have to acknowledge the French? French? - Oh yea: La Gu

POPSYank 'Jihad Jane," Arrested
She was charged with conspiracy to kill in a foreign country. That is against the law. It's a disgrace we don't enforce this with all the American citizens who join the Israeli army for awhile and then come back home. Even the current White House Chief of Staff, was in the IDF service during the first Gulf War. The government should really put out a list keeping us up to date who we can be mercenaries for? How was Jihad Jane suppose to know it was illegal for her to do exactly what Rohm Emanuel did: join a foreign army. So a list of who are our official Enemies would be good to have. It's just so hard to keep up. You can wake up in the middle of the night wondering: Is it okay to be supporting Somalia today or is it okay to join the IDF or what? Ever since WW2 -- when we stopped needing a Declaration of War to start invasions -- the military has been out of control. We pretend we're "allies," with a country that has no allies (it doesn't even have borders); it's

POPSU.S. War in Somalia We also fund and sometimes direct the Euthopian Army to do things for us. This is ALL wrong, since WW2; all wrong. Our law says Congress must Declare War...no excuses, no weasel words, no 'special supplemental amendments,' whatever, -- but an official Declaration of War. At least this would have Congress and us discuss, consider, debate and clearly decide. Our USA military is out-of-control.

POPSFood-stamp fraud: Detroit-area stores swipe millions from aid program *IF* Washington would hire more investigators & law enforcement officers to stamp out the fraud in this Federal Program (and others), the tax payers would save billions and there'd be money to actually care for the genuinely needy. My blood boiled several years ago while waiting in the grocery line behind 2 unwed mothers (no rings). With about $100.00 in food stamps they purchased canned goods, bread, meat, baby food/diapers, vegetables, etc. Then with their cash money (I kid you not!) they bought cigarettes, a couple cases of beer, ice cream, pastries, and lottery tickets. And the more babies they have (black or white; it doesn't matter), the more they get in food stamps.

POPSAnti-Americanism in seven easy steps # The U.S takes over. If this happens, it will be accused of “creating a military occupation under the guise of humanitarian aid” and “occupying” the country outright. (Apologies, my memory’s failing me. These criticisms have been aired already. The first quote’s from President Chavez of Venezuela. The second’s from Alain Joyandet, France’s “Co-operation Minister”.) # The U.S doesn’t take over. If this happens, it will be criticised for “not doing enough” - and isolationism. # So either way, the U.S loses. I’m not a fully signed-up member of the Stars-and-Stripes fan club. But there are times when I think: who’d be an American? Paul Goodman

POPSWoman Stoned For Adultery in Somalia The joys of Sharia Law. “We were told she submitted herself to be punished, yet we could see her screaming as she was forcefully bound, legs and hands. A relative of hers ran toward her, but the Islamists opened fire and killed a child.” According to this NY Times blurb, Somali human rights officials say that the woman did not in fact commit adultery, but was raped.

POPSWhite House Briefed On Flight 253 Bomb Technology Two Months Prior
It turns out the White House was also briefed in October regarding this exact same explosive device " and its ability to make it pass airport screening systems: White House counterterrorism adviser John Brennan was briefed in October on an assassination attempt by Al Qaeda that investigators now believe used the same underwear bombing technique as the Nigerian suspect who tried to blow up Northwest Airlines Flight 253 on Christmas Day, U.S. intelligence and administration officials tell NEWSWEEK. The briefing to Brennan was delivered at the White House by Muhammad bin Nayef, Saudi Arabia’s chief counterterrorism official. What is wrong with the people in the White House? You get a briefing on a bomb attack that almost succeeded in killing a key Saudi ally, then the same type of bomb shows up one month later in Somalia. All the while warning signs are blaring about a possible holiday attack and a distraught father is shooting off warning flares about his son’s

POPSWhere will the drones go in 2010? Perhaps more important, they can, to steal a Star Trek line, boldly go where no man has gone before. Since the first drone assassination attack of the Global War on Terror -- in Yemen in 2002 -- in which several men, reputedly al-Qaeda militants, were incinerated inside a car, drones have been taking war into new territory. They have already struck in Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and possibly Somalia. As the first robot terminators of our age, they symbolize the loosing of American war-making powers from the oversight of Congress and the American people. In principle, they have made borders (hence national sovereignty) increasingly insignificant as assassination attacks can be launched 24/7 against those we deem our enemies, on the basis of unknown intelligence or evidence.

POPSThreats to Yemen Prove America Hasn't Learned the Lesson of History It used to be that it was considered unwise to open conflict on two fronts at once. It won't be long before the terrorists figure out that it is much easier and more effective to explode their bombs in airports before going through "security". Rule number one when dealing with hornets is not to stir them up. (Thanks to Liam Fox for the link.)

POPSHey Buddy, Can You Spare $2 Billion? "The civilian component of what we're doing is critical to success for our country," Gates told U.S. soldiers in Kirkuk, Iraq, earlier this month, echoing a concern he has expressed frequently. "And, unfortunately, the civilian elements of our government -- the State Department, AID and so on -- have been starved of resources for decades." Starved!! .

POPSMilitary Has “Zero Input” and “Zero Influence” on Gitmo Transfers Not content with the Friday bad-news dump, the administration announced on the Sunday before Christmas that it had transferred a dozen detainees out of Gitmo. ... The twelve detainees have been transferred to: Yemen, an al-Qaeda hotbed whose government makes common cause with jihadists (and has a history of allowing them to escape " or of releasing them outright); Afghanistan, which is so ungovernable and rife with jihadism that we're surging thousands of troops there (troops the jihadists are targeting); and Somaliland, which is not even a country, and which offers an easy entree into Somalia, a failed state and al-Qaeda safe-haven. At least one of the released terrorists, a Somali named Abdullahi Sudi Arale (aka Ismail Mahmoud Muhammad), was released notwithstanding the military's designation of him as a "high-value detainee"
