A tool for understanding the impacts of climate change on low-income and minority communities. How do you preach the importance of preventive measures to increasingly drastic change in weather patterns, that results in action, when you are working with people who are dealing with constant crisis not clearly linked with the environment?

Chinook Goes Down in Iraq
cptenaud
by cptenaud  9-18-2008
Comments from troops; I read that the Chinook had a hard landing... (0.00 / 0) but that doesn't mean that it wasn't taking/evading fire. If any of you are so inclined, please pray for the pilots and passengers and their families. Make wars unprofitable and you make them impossible. ~A. Philip Randolph maintenance. (4.00 / 1) Was this a maintenance issue? We already know that the troops and equipment are stretched too thin. Last read I had was "mechanical failure"... (0.00 / 0) maybe read it a icasualties. Helos and Sand. (4.00 / 1) Not a good combo. And to overuse them in a sandy enviornment is not good either. Drought has added to the 'usual' problems... (0.00 / 0) dust, haze, and sand storms. I just got word that the official word (0.00 / 0) is mechanical failure. Of course it could be a while for the safety officer and tactical ops officer to investigate and pin down exactly what the malfunction was...

Meet Satish Kumar (a diamond geezer)
cakebelly
by cakebelly  9-21-2008
In 1973, he settled in England, taking an Editorship of Resurgence magazine. He has been the editor ever since (30 + years!). He is the guiding spirit behind a number of ecological, spiritual and educational ventures in Britain. He founded the Small School in Hartland, a pioneering secondary school (aged 11-16), which brings into its curriculum ecological and spiritual values. In 1991, Schumacher College, a residential international center for the study of ecological and spiritual values, was founded, of which he is the Director of Programme. Following Indian tradition, in his fiftieth year, he undertook another pilgrimage: again carrying no money, he walked 2,000 miles to the holy places of Britain — Glastonbury, Canterbury, Lindisfarne and Iona. Meeting old friends and making new ones along the way, this pilgrimage was a celebration of his love of life and nature. In July 2000, Satish Kumar was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Education from the University of Plymouth. In July

Great science books for little kids, from HarperChildrens
enbar
by enbar  9-7-2008    3
This is an excellent series. Short, easy-to-read, beautifully illustrated books on simple science topics -- like bugs, seeds, storms, seasons, sleep, and teeth -- written in engaging language that children can both understand AND learn real scientific facts from. Two levels of difficulty: stage 1 is for pre-K to K-age children; stage 2 is for kids in primary grades.

Singularity by 2045 - incredible life in a tamed world
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  8-6-2008    1
Other possible advancements from 2050 to 2100 could include colonies on Moon, Mars and beyond, finding and harnessing wormholes that break “light speed” barriers in extraterrestrial travel, and whisking information through time to meet ourselves at an earlier age, or go forward and see what the future has in store for us. It may even become possible to gather scanned minds from lost loved ones before their death enabling them to continue living in our time. How wild would that be?

Do You Love This Face?
einbar
by einbar  8-12-2008    1
Evolutionary biology holds that in any given population, extreme characteristics tend to fall away in favor of average ones. Birds with unusually long or short wings die more often "in storms. Human babies who are born larger or smaller than average are less likely to survive. The ability to form an average-mate template would have conveyed a singular survival advantage."

Lord Nelson and Captain Cook Logs Have Cast New Light on Climate Change
merrie
by merrie  8-5-2008    1
Scientists have uncovered a treasure trove of meteorological information contained in the detailed logs kept by those on board the vessels that established Britain's great seafaring traditition including those on Nelsons' Victory and Cook's Endeavour. Many scientists believe that storms are caused by global warming, but these were during the so-called Little Ice Age that affected Europe from about 1600 to 1850. The records also suggest that Europe saw a spell of rapid warming, similar to that experienced today, during the 1730s that must have been caused naturally. "British archives contain more than 100,000 Royal Navy logbooks from around 1670 to 1850 alone," Mr Wheeler said. "They are a stunning resource".

PLUG IN AND GO ?
jt3600
by jt3600  7-19-2008    4
I'm all for saving the environment but what happens when we all plug in especially during long hot days, the electric company freaks when the air conditioners jump a degree or 2, then where will you be when you can't plug in to even use your car ? Where's all the electricity coming from ? What about being plugged in during storms ?
