POPSThe World's Greatest Aviation Innovationsby
Mohir Yesterday 9:32 PM 9. The flying wing -- Yves Rossy keeps breaking records and defying expectations with his 8-foot-diameter, carbon composite flying wing. Last week he made a successful 13 minute, 125 mph trip across the English Channel. 10. Stealth aircraft -- What's cooler than a plane that can outsmart radar? Because the surfaces of a stealth are designed to absorb radio waves or reflect them away from the receiver, stealth planes can sneak in and sneak out undetected. Too bad they're so expensive: The 21 plane B-2 program cost over $45 billion. 11. Jetway -- Another one most of us don't think about is the long covered walkway the connects our departure gate with our plane. 12. Deicing -- Ice buildup is the cause of many fatal aircraft accidents, which is why applying monopropylene de-icing fluid to wings pre-flight has become standard operating procedure.

POPSRFID Update Journal of Commerce runs a decent survey of the state of radio frequency identification. Lockheed gets a mention - we covered that company's keen interest in RFID here http://www.forbes.com/beltway/2007/06/13/lockheed-savi-rfid-biz-beltway-cx_ag_0613beltway.html Further down in the story, watch also for the the mention of Ekahau, a company we profiled here http://www.forbes.com/businessinthebeltway/2007/04/26/beltway-ekahau-wifi-biz-wash-cz_atg_0426ekahau.html.

POPSUS Approves Nuclear Deal with India compare this to the US refusal to permit Iran to have nuclear civilian technology, even thought it complies to a higher standard than India apparently. Also... India has said it retains the right to conduct nuclear tests and this: allows India to expand its nuclear power industry without requiring it to sign the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) as other nations must. And India is next door to Pakistan, where the US is worried about terrorists.

POPSAAE Declares Victory over 'Eco-Terrorists' Typical 'us vs them' rhetoric but this group takes it too far. I am all for breaking our dependence on foreign oil, but current oil shale extraction technology is too water intensive, environmentally destructive, and too expensive to be considered a viable alternative to foreign oil. Any oil that is extracted will be sold to the higher profit markets overseas and we Americans will still be faced with high pump prices in addition to ruined landscape. Oil shale production requires lots of fresh water that is currently being used to irrigate food crops and ranch land which means producing oil will come at the cost of food production.

POPSU.S. Department of Energy: Six Solar Bets Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Energy gave the nod to six solar companies working on advanced photovoltaic tech. The companies chosen hail from California, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. Among them: 1366 Technologies, a company we profiled recently here: http://www.forbes.com/businessinthebeltway/2008/08/19/beltway-solar-vanmierlo-biz-wash-cz_atg_0820beltway.html The dollar amounts here are a long way from staggering, and, as the DOE's press release notes, they are "subject to annual appropriations." At the very least, the win fits 1366's explicit strategy of working with public sector.
