POPSWorld First: Brain Tissues from Stem Cells
continues: "In regenerative therapy, only a limited number of diseases can be cured with simple cell transplants. Transplanting tissues could raise hopes for greater functional recovery," the institute said in a statement. "Cultivated tissues are still insufficient and too small to be used to treat stroke patients. But study of in-vitro cultivation of more mature cortex tissues, such as those with six zones like in the adult human brain, will be stepped up," it said. The tissues could also serve as "a mini organ" for use in studying the cause of the Alzheimer's disease and developing vaccines, it said. Embryonic stem cells are harvested by destroying a viable embryo, a process that some people find unacceptable. Riken said cortex tissues were also obtained from "induced pluripotent stem cells," which are similar to embryonic stem cells but artificially induced, typically from adult cells such as skin cells. The research was led by Yoshiki Sasai at Riken Centre for Devel

POPSScientists seek to create 'three-parent' babies "We respect the fact that there are people who have moral objections to any type of research involving human embryos. However, it could be argued that there is a moral obligation to reduce suffering in children at risk of inheriting mitochondrial disease," says Herbert.

POPSQueens are made, not born In the context of honey bee diseases, Dr Maleszka says "since we now can produce queens in vitro (in the lab), our work has the potential to be used for producing 'super queens' with specific characteristics or disease resistant genotypes."

POPSAustralia Day Award for infertility expert Amongst his findings is the fact that regulation of egg development and ovulation was not just hormone based, but involved interaction between cells in the ovary. His findings have led to improved outcomes in stimulating women to produce eggs in IVF procedures

POPSSunscreen: Health Effects Little (and disputed) evidence of negative effects of absorbed sunscreens. Might lead to feminization of bodily hormone mixture but this is not verified in other study. Don't worry about sunscreens preventing vitamin D production.

POPSCouple Pleads Deportation Order ""The only possible means for them to qualify for this relief (from deportation) was through a means expressly prohibited by the Catholic Church," Robles said." I'm no theologian (nor even religious), but what about Christians obeying the laws of the land?

POPSGet Your Coathangers Ready Anyone who believes that this has nothing to do with banning abortion is a fool. The other troubling point is that it, as mentioned in the article, could also affect birth control. Welcome to 1950 folks. Once again religious ideology takes precedent over rational thought. Once again, emotional pleading trumps reasoned, rational discourse.

POPSU.K. Woman Can't Use Frozen Embryo Every human should have the right to decide when or if their genetic material can be made into a child. It looks like this man did exercise that right when he chose to create zygotes and later, the embryos were frozen. For the courts to decide to destroy the life is actually a hairy situation. How many women, right now are pregnant by a man who may not want to be a father? The man has NO say in whether the women keeps the child or not. What is the difference here? The fact that the woman's embryo is not yet in her body so they say she has no say? If a man abdicates ownership rights when a woman is naturally pregnant, then why would a man somehow have the right to stop that same process just because of the location of the baby? And would this technically be considered a man aborting a child?

POPSScientists find bird flu antibody Using this technique, we can isolate the cells that make these antibodies so that this antibody can now be reproduced in vitro and eventually massively produced to treat other individuals."
