"We respect the fact that there are people who have moral objections to any type of research involving human embryos. However, it could be argued that there is a moral obligation to reduce suffering in children at risk of inheriting mitochondrial disease," says Herbert.

Queens are made, not born
Fast T friend
by Fast T friend  3-16-2008    1
In the context of honey bee diseases, Dr Maleszka says "since we now can produce queens in vitro (in the lab), our work has the potential to be used for producing 'super queens' with specific characteristics or disease resistant genotypes."

Get Your Coathangers Ready
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  12-12-2007
Anyone who believes that this has nothing to do with banning abortion is a fool. The other troubling point is that it, as mentioned in the article, could also affect birth control. Welcome to 1950 folks. Once again religious ideology takes precedent over rational thought. Once again, emotional pleading trumps reasoned, rational discourse.

World First: Brain Tissues from Stem Cells
cakebelly
by cakebelly  11-6-2008    1
continues: "In regenerative therapy, only a limited number of diseases can be cured with simple cell transplants. Transplanting tissues could raise hopes for greater functional recovery," the institute said in a statement. "Cultivated tissues are still insufficient and too small to be used to treat stroke patients. But study of in-vitro cultivation of more mature cortex tissues, such as those with six zones like in the adult human brain, will be stepped up," it said. The tissues could also serve as "a mini organ" for use in studying the cause of the Alzheimer's disease and developing vaccines, it said. Embryonic stem cells are harvested by destroying a viable embryo, a process that some people find unacceptable. Riken said cortex tissues were also obtained from "induced pluripotent stem cells," which are similar to embryonic stem cells but artificially induced, typically from adult cells such as skin cells. The research was led by Yoshiki Sasai at Riken Centre for Devel

U.K. Woman Can't Use Frozen Embryo
wiccantexan
by wiccantexan  6-19-2007
Every human should have the right to decide when or if their genetic material can be made into a child. It looks like this man did exercise that right when he chose to create zygotes and later, the embryos were frozen. For the courts to decide to destroy the life is actually a hairy situation. How many women, right now are pregnant by a man who may not want to be a father? The man has NO say in whether the women keeps the child or not. What is the difference here? The fact that the woman's embryo is not yet in her body so they say she has no say? If a man abdicates ownership rights when a woman is naturally pregnant, then why would a man somehow have the right to stop that same process just because of the location of the baby? And would this technically be considered a man aborting a child?
