GOP Sen. Ted Stevens Loses
Wisco
by Wisco  Today 9:43 PM    2
Now they won't have to kick him out. Bonus, Sarah Palin's hopes that she gets to appoint Steven's successor goes down a series of tubes. Still, what does this say about the average Alaskan? Stevens is a convicted felon. It shouldn't even have been close. Republicans are so freakin' crazy up there that they'd rather re-elected a prison-bound criminal than a Democrat. Now those are partisan blinders.

Video: How Obama Got Elected

It's depressing that over half of those interviewed have a college degree. An American citizen should know a little more about his country and his candidates before they cast their all important votes. Uninformed citizens = self-serving, uninformed representatives.

Hurrah for the Millennials!
dulios
by dulios  Yesterday 5:44 PM    1
When it comes to policy, Millennials are liberal interventionists on economic issues, active multilateralists in foreign affairs and tolerant non-meddlers on social issues-a profile that most closely matches the Democratic Party's platform as well as the new President's agenda. Their propensity to vote straight Democratic was clearly evident in 2008 when young voters supported Democratic congressional candidates by about the same margin that they did Obama (63% vs. 34%).

Referenda: Good News for Women, Bad for Gays
Wisco
by Wisco  11-5-2008    1
Good on them. However, several states cast votes that they'll eventually regret. In California, Prop. 8 wins . Marriage equality is dead in California -- the same is true of measures in Arizona and Florida. In Arkansas, gays are banned from adopting or becoming foster parents . That's a shame -- literally. These are attitudes we'll all look back at with shame.

Voter Turnout Didn't Set Record
merrie
by merrie  11-14-2008
Democrats' passion wasn't matched by GOP When the official counts are in, Gans said, the final tally may approach 129 million, which would be almost 62 percent of eligible voters, up from 60.6 percent four years ago but below the 1964 turnout rate of 64 percent of eligible voters under Gans's formula. In counts posted as of late yesterday, Obama led McCain 67 million votes to 58.5 million, with 1.7 million votes cast for minor party candidates and write-ins. That is a popular-vote margin of about 6.7 percentage points. Other factors, including down-ballot contests for congressional seats, state offices, and statewide ballot questions also might have affected turnout in some states. While some states trumpeted high turnout figures based on the number of registered voters, neither Gans nor McDonald use voter registration figures as the basis for determining eligible voters because the quality and maintenance of current voter lists varies greatly from state to state.

A few comments from the right wing social news site Free Republic. These people believe Bill Clinton was everything from a serial killer to a coke smuggler, so this shouldn't come as any surprise. Consider this a preview. These are the fevered, psychotic, paranoid, and -- frankly -- cruel conspiracy theories we'll be hearing about for the next four years at least. That's right, these psychopaths actually believe Barack Obama would kill his own grandmother to win an election. These are seriously fucked in the head individuals.

SOmething rotten in the state of Minnesota
sillysam
by sillysam  11-11-2008    10
To put this change in perspective, that single precinct’s corrections accounted for a significantly larger net swing in votes between the parties than occurred for all the precincts in the entire state for the presidential, congressional, or state house races. Indeed, the 504 total new votes for Franken from all the precincts is greater than adding together all the changes for all the precincts in the entire state for the presidential, congressional, and state house races combined (a sum of 482). To many, it just seems like too much of a coincidence that Minnesota's one tight race just happens to be the race with the most "corrected" votes by far. But the real travesty will be to start letting election officials divine voter's intent. If you want to discourage people from voting, election fraud is one sure way of doing it.

Her legs were much more lovely but the point behind the cartoon is true. I don't believe McCain would have received nearly as many votes without her. I know I wouldn't have even bothered. As a man and for his service and sacrifice, I can easily honor him. For the way he ran the campaign and what he brought to the GOP ticket, I can not. He will go back to the Senate making nice with the opposition party and contributing to the continuing movement of my Country to the lower Left.

The voters are corrupt. “It is said that power corrupts, but actually it's more true that power attracts the corruptible. The sane are usually attracted by other things than power.” - David Brin “each candidate behaved well in the hope of being judged worthy of election. However, this system was disastrous when the city had become corrupt. For then it was not the most virtuous but the most powerful who stood for election, and the weak, even if virtuous, were too frightened to run for office.” - Machiavelli

Nov.05, 2008 Historical Perspective on Obama's Victory
merrie
by merrie  11-10-2008    1
Obama does have a mandate to lead. He won the popular vote, the Electoral College, and he brought out significant turnout. But it’s a stretch to count the high turnout as a credit to Obama since his margin of victory was so slim. This means that almost as many of the votes that Obama got out were coming out to vote against him. Similarly, the Electoral College results may like slanted heavily to Obama’s favor, but historically speaking they are not even up to the average margin of victory. And the popular vote is the same story – Obama won. But that’s about all you can say about it. There’s one final detail to consider. Obama’s victory is historic because he’s black and this is America. Many of those who came out to support him were motivated by this sense of history rather than by support of his policies. On the other hand, many of those who voted against him were motivated by a fear for his policies.

Rudd's UN Vote Risks Anger of Jewish community
ratcatcher2
by ratcatcher2  11-9-2008
In Israel, meanwhile, tens of thousands gathered yesterday at the square in Tel Aviv where PM Rabin was assassinated, to remember the man and his legacy 13 years after his murder. On Nov 4, 1995, Rabin was gunned down by an ultra-nationalist Jewish opponent of his policy of trading land to the Palestinians for peace. "Yitzhak, you are missed. The country misses you, you are missed by every one of us, but your way has not been lost," said President Peres, Rabin's partner in peacemaking, who was by his side the night he was assassinated. The rally in the square in front of the Tel Aviv town hall has become an annual event for Israelis wishing to pay their respects to their late leader.
