WV charlatan to be examined by US Supreme Court
masbury
by masbury  11-16-2008    1
Don Blankenship, CEO of WV's Massey Energy Co., which has a criminal record of over 5,000 counts, has been fined for employee deaths and waterway pollution, DB was seen in Monte Carlo with a WV Supreme Ct judge while appealing a $50 million judgment to the court (judge later recused himself), has another judge on the court who got $3 million from DB to get elected, who refused to recuse himself from the appeal, and the $50 M fine was shot down 3-2. Ah, but now the US Supreme Court has decided it will look over an appeal to the case challenging the judge's presence. Do you suppose justice might prevail in WV? DB has spent over $6 million to elect Republicans in WV.

Officer reveals how police in the USA conduct interrogations
Communicator
by Communicator  11-16-2008
Fascinating. Detective talks about how he conducts interrogations, the different kinds of confessions he gets, and how. Techniques include deception, use of props - like tape recorders and video tapes that are there for show, and lying -- which apparently is legal in the USA for police to do during interrogations.

Google Follows Flu Trends by your Key Stroaks
glennbah
by glennbah  11-12-2008
There is a new common symptom of the flu, in addition to the usual aches, coughs, fevers and sore throats. Turns out a lot of ailing Americans enter phrases like “flu symptoms” into Google and other search engines before they call their doctors. That simple act, multiplied across millions of keyboards in homes around the country, has given rise to a new early warning system for fast-spreading flu outbreaks, called Google Flu Trends.

Republican Foot-Soldiers Vacating Washington Forced To Sell Homes In Terrible Market
Spiritualmonkey
by Spiritualmonkey  11-6-2008
What was that about a "Permanent Republican Majority?" Speak louder, there's an immense chant of "YES WE CAN" in my ear. I have little to no sympathy. These are the foot-soldiers who've done Karl Rove's dirty work for 8 years. The fucking country imploded on their watch, due to their candidate's policies. They were the party in power that caused this massive housing bubble explosion and econopocalypse. Payback's a bitchs, ain't it? Go wander in the wilderness for a while and get your party's soul back. And if someone has to take it in the ass with no reach-around on their house, you're the ones who fought so hard for the system that led to this. Just shut up & go away. You hands-on fuckers aren't the people the John Wayne Chaser was meant for.

What will the Obama's First Actions Be?
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  11-5-2008
I love the first pic. on this page (wouldn't clip) What will the Obama White House Be Like? IMO (and some others) Very, very slow and careful; methodical General Petraeus has already been order to start withdrawing troops from Iraq. (in Obama's Victory Speech) All parties will be included in the Administration and others, these folks will be given orders to accomplish things. His brass knuckles just announced Chief of Staff (Ron Emanuel) will frequently go over to the Democratic Congress and beat their brains out and kick their ass until they do what Obama wants. With Democrats having a majority in both Houses legislation will quickly pass and there will be no filibusters because Obama will get 8 or 9 Republicans to go along with him. Pakistan will either kill or deliver bin Laden or agree to let a strike team of Special Forces in to get him ourselves; or we will go in whether Pakistan likes it or not. A massive program for alternative energy will begin.

Long lines to vote are a modern poll tax
Lexica
by Lexica  11-4-2008
In January 1964, the 24th Amendment to the Constitution abolished the poll tax. A poll tax was a fee you had to pay at the time of voting. No money, no vote. So, rich people voted, poor people didn't. 44 years later, we have a sort of poll tax: long lines. Long lines. How many hours did it "cost" you to vote? 2? 4? 6? How much income did you lose? So, you need the money, or if you can't take the long wait, guess what? You don't vote. You want to vote, but you can't afford to. Nonvoters in Ohio, 2004, cost John Kerry the Presidency...Obama voters, no matter what, no matter how long, please, please don't go home. Wait as long as you have to. But do NOT go home without casting your vote...Vote, then go home. VOTE. VOTE... It is time for CHANGE. We, the People have the POWER to make that CHANGE. The Ballot. Vote Bush and his Republican pals out of office. America can't have 4 MORE years, the SAME as the last 4 with the failed Bush-McCain failed policies...VOTE THE BUMS OUT!

All Over But the Concession Speech
Wisco

If McCain needed a miracle after Ohio, he needs two now. This is it, it's over. Virginia and Ohio make it impossible for McCain, unless literally hundreds of polls are wrong. This is Obama's night. He is President-Elect. McCain probably won't concede for a while yet, so as not to hurt the down ticket races in the yet to close polls. But he will concede. Make sure to save some champagne for the victory speech. Congrats America, you earned this one.

Obama Wins Ohio: McCain Has No Hope.
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  11-4-2008
"That's the ballgame," a Republican strategist admits on CNN news. No Republican has every won the White House without winning Ohio. Current electoral vote total: Obama 194; McCain 69 Three important states on the East Coast remain undeclared but with Obama leading in two: Florida and North Carolina. Virgina too close to call. Virginia and North Carolina are two states of the "Old South -- the Old Confederacy from the USA Civil War," ...north and they have never gone Democratic before (or maybe once, or something) The Virginia Senate seat has been declared a victory for the Democrats...who are picking up House and Senates seats big time.

West Coast Polls Just Closed: Obama Projected Winner !
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  11-4-2008
Two minutes ago CNN projected Obama will be the 44th President of the United States of America. Virgina, also, capital of the Confederacy during the USA Civil War, becomes the first state in the Old South to go Democratic. Obama had to "flip a red state blue," to be assured of winning - Virginia was the state where that happen. Florida was next. Victory was then certain. But when California reported it's results.. it was over. Obama had won; Obama was over the 270 amount of votes he needed. Um...People at Obama's huge rally in Chicago are going wild in joy and celebration. McCain comes out 20 minutes after the West Coast polls close and conceded defeat and congratulated Obama -- and urged all his supporters to offer him - the new President -- good will and good effort; and that it's time to move beyond disappointment and work together. It's cool. It's really great. An incredible triumph in American history. A dark past has been firmly left behind. We hope that t

Election Night Timetable
zizzy
by zizzy  11-4-2008
10 p.m.: Voting ends in GOP-held, Iowa, Montana and Nevada, a combined 15 votes. Losing these would be a setback for McCain, while winning them would be a boon for Obama. Utah's five votes are a certainty for McCain. • 11 p.m.: Four states — mega-prize California, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington — are expected to quickly give Obama a combined 77 votes, while Idaho is expected to award its four votes to McCain. • 1 a.m.: Capping off the night is Alaska, where GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin is governor. The Republican ticket is a shoo-in for those three votes. And then it's over. Or not.

Problems Prompt Call for VA Voting Hours Extension
Wisco
by Wisco  11-4-2008
This is almost certain to be only one of many election day problems that'll be reported throughout the day. This one is significant, because it's pretty much impossible for McCain to win without taking Virginia. One of the first things we ought to do after all the smoke clears is get rid of these goddam computerized voting machines. If you can't convince people that the fact that they're easily rigged is anything other than a conspiracy theory, there's plenty of evidence that they're junk and don't work. It's not a conspiracy that these lemons are a ripoff. Like the story says, if you have any problems, call 1-866-OUR-VOTE or 1-866-MY-VOTE1 . Don't let anyone turn you away, don't let anyone keep you from voting.

Prediction: XXX XXX XXX Wins 281-257
merrie
by merrie  11-4-2008    1
From this base case (XXX XXX XXX winning with an 11 point cushion), there are a couple deviations worth mentioning, given that Virginia and Pennsylvania seem to represent the most tenuous wins for McCain. * If McCain loses Virginia (13 votes), he can still win by picking up any of the three western battlegrounds (NM, CO, or NV). Of these, at least Colorado appears plausible, so Virginia isn't necessarily a killer. * If McCain loses Pennsylvania (21 votes), he needs to pick up any two of those western states. This is a stretch, so losing Pennsylvania would appear nearly lethal. The caveat here is that McCain could lose Pennsylvania and pick up only Colorado, which would yield a 269-269 tie. * If McCain loses both Virginia and Pennsylvania, President Obama is a near mathematical certainty.

Possible McCain win scenarios

Which states to watch: Out of 10,000 simulations, McCain wins 624. "there are some states that truly do appear to be "must-wins" for McCain. In each and every one of the 624 victory scenarios that the simulation found for him this afternoon, McCain won Florida, Georgia, Missouri, Indiana and Montana. He also picked up Ohio in 621 out of the 624 simulations, and North Carolina in 622 out of 624. If McCain drops any of those states, it's pretty much over.
