Interesting Article Abstract on Poverty
DanaGarrett
by DanaGarrett  11-12-2008    1
Apparently this research finds that consumer prices are higher (2 - 5%) in poor neighborhoods compared to wealthy neighborhoods. The inability of the poor to shop for consumer goods that are less expensive is determined by their lack of access to cars. They are stuck paying higher prices. The benefits of a competitive market are disproportionately denied to the poor.

Obama’s CHANGE.GOV Site Has, uh, Changed Quite A Bit
merrie
by merrie  11-9-2008    3
$4,000 in value for 100 hours is $40 an hour, tax-free. For most students, because they pay no federal income tax, this will amount to an annual handout of $4,000 less the value of the service they provide (bravely assuming that it’s productive), which would be at most the private-sector equivalent of about $12 an hour with benefits, or $1,200. Space doesn’t permit me to go into all of the mind-boggling distortions this would lead to, but here’s a start (some information was obtained from the tables listed at this page at collegeboard.com): How do you manage a program with the equivalent of almost 4 million 400,000 full-time employees efficiently and effectively? Wal-Mart, which is I believe the nation’s largest employer, has 2.1 million employees. (Ironic/never happen suggestion of the day: Maybe Uncle Sam should outsource program administration to Wal-mart. At least they might keep it under control).

RNC Puts Palin on Fashion Welfare; Palin Goes Wild
blueridge
by blueridge  10-24-2008    5
Republicans give Clothing-Stamps to Palin and family. Palin uses it at Neiman Mark-Ups. What hypocrisy. Talk about Socialism! She cannot afford her own clothes? They are millionaires! Meet the real Jane six-pack. Still think she is "conservative" fiscally? Take a look at the itemized bills. Spends like a "liberal" doesn't she? I wonder how people who donated to the RNC feel about this spending of their contributions? Just another example of Palin's principles, she will accept charity and handouts from others. Really, how did she talk the RNC into this? Or did they want her to get a "makeover" in fashion? I wonder how much they paid for her hair do-over. Question: If Palin was a man running for VP, would he get this treatment? Not a chance. So this policy is sexist too.

I don't have many friends here at Clipmarks anymore, but I do still have an opinion. China is like Wal-Mart. Too big to give a damn about other people. They have not improved their human rights or pollution policies. Empty Promises to all of us and their behavior is making the spirit of the Olympics into one BIG sham

I run into these people a lot here in Georgia. People that make up their minds based on bumper stickers and 30 second TV ads. In a country with such promise, there is a huge swath of people that are, IMO, wasting the potential of this free society to learn, grow, and advance the human condition. Dare I use the word shallow?

Why DRM-protected Music is a Waste of Money
telecommatt
by telecommatt  9-30-2008
This is a shining example of why DRM is flawed. Why should our music collection depend on the continued support of some retailer? Any time you pay money for DRM-protected music you are renting the music that you purchased . And once those DRM servers shut down, they walk away with your money AND your music.

ACORN's Radical Anti-Capitalism Agenda
merrie
by merrie  9-30-2008    1
......millions of low-income residents of cities pay excessively high prices for consumer goods in part because of a lack of competition. The report noted that in Chicago "higher priced, small grocery stores" are concentrated in the city's poorer neighborhoods—exactly the kind of place where big-box stores now want to open. Far from rejecting these stores, inner-city residents have embraced them. Thousands of local residents showed up to apply for jobs when Wal-Mart announced it was opening a new store in an abandoned former Macy's outlet in the Baldwin Hills section of Los Angeles. After the store opened in 2003, sales soared at the mall were the Wal-Mart was located and other national retailers moved into the predominantly black neighborhood, vastly improving the range of products offered to residents.

Barbies For War!

Anne Heche’s mother, Nancy, talked about her distress when her daughter told her she was involved with Ellen. Jeff Johnston told me he had “a struggle” with homosexuality “for a season,” but is now “happily married with three boys.” (Books for sale there included “Mommy, Why Are They Holding Hands?” and “You Don’t Have to Be Gay.”) “We are one Supreme Court justice away from overturning Roe v. Wade,” he excitedly told me. R. D. Levno, a retired school principal, flew in from Fairbanks. “She’s a child, inexperienced and simplistic,” she said of Sarah. “It’s taking us back to junior high school. She’s one of the popular girls, but one of the mean girls. She is seductive, but she is invented.” I KNEW she reminded me of a "Heather"

No one was able to reach us all day.And we were OK. We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem. We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's, no cell phones, no personal computer! s, no Internet or chat rooms....... WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them! We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents. We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever. We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not poke out very many eyes. We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just wal

When we shop at chain stores, we save money -- but what do we lose?

This is one of those classic dilemmas. As the economy tightens up and chain stores take over, it gets harder and harder to support the kinds of businesses we all would rather have in our communities. How much of a premium would you pay to help keep locally-owned businesses alive?

Two Large Solar Projects Planned for California
Wisco
by Wisco  8-17-2008    1
While I'm not extremely keen on these sort of plants -- there's no real reason to centralize solar generation like this -- it's nice to see that solar's being taken seriously. Given recent advances in photovoltaic technology, the price is coming down enough for it to be put anywhere the sun shines. In other words, there's no reason to use up huge expanses of land when you can do the same thing on rooftops. Still, any time new generating capacity comes from green tech, it's good news.

Wal-Mart Against Union and Democrats

For 100 years and with much success, American Corporations have killed any kind of Union Movement. Democracies without Independent Working Representation are no real democracies at all. They are than dependent on politicians and the judicial system. Every man and woman for themselves and the corporations against all. Unfair, to say the least.

Cont... It can be galling to hear companies argue that they have to cut wages and benefits for hourly workers – even as they reward top executives with millions of dollars in stock options. The chief executive of Wal-Mart earns $27 million a year, while the company’s average worker takes home only about $10 an hour. But let’s assume that the chief executive got 27 cents instead of $27 million, and that Wal-Mart distributed the savings to its hourly workers. They would each receive a bonus of less than $20. It’s not executive pay that has created this new world. The current frenzy over Wal-Mart is instructive. Its size is unprecedented.Yet for all its billions in profit, it still amounts to less than four cents on the dollar.Raise the cost of employing people, and the company will eliminate jobs. Its business model only works on low prices, which require low labor costs. ...Consumers continue to enjoy these low prices and thousands of applicants continue to apply for those jobs.
