The story of Sartre and de Beauvoir as never told before
Aribeth
by Aribeth  4-12-2008    10
If this couple expected their arrangement would spare them the trials and heartache of a conventional marriage, they were wrong.Their multiple affairs went on until World War II when Sartre was called up and their sex games had to be conducted through letters.Left behind in Paris, Simone continued to seduce both men and women, writing titillating descriptions of her activities to Sartre behind the Maginot Line, which reveal her heartlessness and the vulnerability of her conquests.Tragically, the lives of these girls, who were pathologically jealous of each other over their teacher's attentions, were permanently blighted. One took to self-harming, another committed suicide. Most remained pathetically unfulfilled and dependent on the childless Simone, who perversely referred to them as her 'family'. ... Sartre had always said the best way to learn about a country was to sleep with its women.

Several of the veterans, all men in their 80s and 90s, denounced the controversial techniques. And when the time came for them to accept honors from the Army's Freedom Team Salute, one veteran refused, citing his opposition to the war in Iraq and procedures that have been used at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. "I feel like the military is using us to say, 'We did spooky stuff then, so it's okay to do it now,' " said Arno Mayer, 81, a professor of European history at Princeton University.

The ten most meaningful videogame quotes of all time
Aribeth
by Aribeth  2-5-2008    8
"Would you kindly?" Not only is this a moving, shocking, and all-around incredible quote about the consequences of blindly accepting authority, but it also represents one of the single most insightful statements ever made about videogaming in general. ... When the player finds out that he has been subliminally controlled by Atlas throughout the entire game, he or she experiences a very sudden, shocking reassessment of values. Having gone through the game thus far with the single-minded intent of beating Andrew Ryan to a bloody pulp, the player is suddenly forced to ask a question most other games would never dream of proposing to the player: "Why am I doing this?" ... One might suggest that questioning authority in a videogame, where structure is more or less mandatory and even the most nonlinear games still have an inescapably linear storyline, would be an ultimately meaningless gesture.

Monopoly: Game, History, Capitalism
invictus
by invictus  2-19-2007
Orbanes’ book is not merely the history of a game: To a large extent, it is a history of America and the world as seen from the Monopoly board. No other modern board game is known so well worldwide (translated at last count into 26 languages), and no other is so closely associated with America and American capitalism. Did you know that Monopoly assisted the escape of Allied prisoners-of-war in the 1940s, and went on to play a part in the downfall of Communism in the 1980s? Want to find out how? Pick these plums out for yourself from this richly enjoyable confection.

Simultaneously, Russia and America Conduct Major War Games

Russian strategic bombers Tu-160, Tu-95 and Tu-22M3, and Il-78 aerial tankers "will conduct flights over the Arctic region, the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans, and the Black Sea, with simulated bombing raids and firing of cruise missiles at testing grounds in northern and southern Russia," Colonel "Alexander Drobyshevsky said." (RIA Novosti). Part of these Russian war games will be conducted in the Arctic, within proximity of US and Canadian territory (Alaska and Canada's Arctic). "U.S. and Canadian fighter jets, including F-15s, were dispatched each time to escort the Russian planes in the exercises, which ranged from two to six aircraft,... "

Not So Fast, Christian Soldiers - War or Crusade?
Jorjor
by Jorjor  8-29-2007    3
Have you ever noticed that almost all religious wars involve monotheistic religions? I have looked and cannot come up with an instance when one polytheistic culture waged religious war against another polytheistic culture. There's always a monotheist involvement - maybe that's because with only one god, the monos think they have more to lose. Read the clip source and the original article

7 Fun Facts About Ms. Pac-Man
Sorgalim
by Sorgalim  3-7-2007    2
 5. Hardcore Ms. Pac-Man geeks have developed their own jargon, as explained on the site Pactionary.com. For example, "premature pac-ulation" occurs when players mistakenly think they've eaten a power pellet, only to turn around and die while trying to eat a ghost. 6. Ms. Pac-Man's likeness has graced dozens of products: clocks, clothing, dolls, games, housewares, jigsaw puzzles, makeup bags, plastic figurines, sneakers, toothbrushes, windup toys, plus (alongside Pac-Man) a highly collectable plastic lunchbox. 7. The video vixen has also appeared in films ("War Games," "Man on the Moon"), music (rapper Lil' Flip samples her sounds on his 2004 tune "Game Over"), and television "Futurama," "Scrubs"). An entire 2002 episode of "Friends" revolves around the pursuit of Ms. Pac-Man high scores. Also, check YouTube for several live-action re-creations.

Baghdad Children "armed" to teeth
BobbyRutan
by BobbyRutan  10-21-2007    5
More: Trade Minister Abed Falah al-Sudani considered banning the toys because they look so realistic. However, given the seeming impossibility of the task, he shelved the idea 10-year-old Haider, has another reason to play with his toy gun "I love it. I like holding it and going outside to kill evildoers. I like to go outside at night like my uncle (a member of the Mahdi Army)," said the boy wearing a ragged T-shirt. In Sadr City, in the vast ghetto where Sadr is considered a hero and his militia calls the shots, children in their war games reflect the bitter sectarian divides -- one side gets to be Shiite militiamen, the other Sunni insurgents. In other neighbourhoods, it's police versus "terrorists", or army versus Al-Qaeda, according to local news Another vendor, Hassan, 27, runs a stall in Bab al-Sharji in the centre of Baghdad. He confirmed that guns are the all-time favourites with children, male or female. "Children prefer guns to trains, balls or radios," he

Army Game "Proves" U.S. Can't Lose
TheCatWhisperer
by TheCatWhisperer  11-27-2006    1
I put lies on the tag, as from the article and other articles available on the game, it is obvious the US Military intentionally had the game made to make it look like the insurgents and enemy could not defeat them. When in fact, these insurgents are causing great damage to US troops and their equipment (and likewise to Canadian, Dutch, etc...) One thing I've read often (and heard from the horse's mouth) is that the enemy is very capable and learns very quickly to take advantage of any weakness in the equipment or its operators.

Horrors! Olympics: Controversy In Iran Over Female Flag Carrier

Whoever is responsible for this unforgivable act, he should know that this gesture constitutes an obstacle for the 'appearance' of Mahdi," said Elmalhoda. He was referring to the mainly Shia Islam belief that imam Mohammed al-Mahdi will appear to fight a final apocalyptic battle over the forces of evil. Followers believe he was born in the year 868 and has been in hiding ever since awaiting a decision from god to reappear. from Adnkronos International, August 8:

Attack on Iran Risks Annialation of The Fifth Fleet
thisnamecantbetaken

Iran’s response will predictably result in a military escalation that culminates in Iran using its arsenal of anti-ship cruise missiles on the U.S. Fifth Fleet and closing off the Strait of Hormuz to all shipping. -------------------- The closing of the Strait of Hormuz to all shipping and total war conditions in the U.S. would lead to a collapse of the world economy, and further erosion of civil liberties in a U.S. engaged in total war.
