POPSCongress approval rating just 10% "A political establishment held in higher regard may have been able to hold together some kind of coalition of the willing," wrote Joel Achenbach in the Washington Post. "But distrust of the nation's leaders, from the leaders of Congress to the president, foreclosed that possibility." This was not mere rhetoric. Congress's public approval rating was down to 18% before the crisis hit. By some estimates, it is now 10% and falling. Washington has seen a "throw the bums out" mood before, notably Newt Gingrich's 1994 anti-government "Republican revolution". But this is something else. Like some others, Gingrich is calling for the resignation of Hank Paulson, the treasury secretary, for presiding over a train wreck and then failing to persuade people why $700bn was needed to get back on the rails.

In the home stretch, she's managing to stay on positive notes, enunciating her and McCain's strong points, and thus keeping possession of the ball, leaving Biden to spend much of his times grouchily refuting her. Update: 10:28 - On the final question regarding "changing the tone" in Washington, Joe claims he has never - not since his freshman year anyway - questioned the motives (or opposed to the judgment) of a fellow Senator. POPSSenate Clears $1.5 Billion for Washington Metro Good news for Washington residents or anyone visiting. As detailed by the Washington Post here http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/22/AR2008092201144.html, Metro's needs are considerable and include "replacing one-third of its rail fleet, about 300 rail cars that are more than 30 years old and nearing the end of their life cycle; replacing about 100 buses every year; repairing leaky tunnels and crumbling station platforms; and repairing bus garages, one of which is more than 100 years old."

POPS ACORN Is A Bad Seed In a letter to ACORN, the State Board of Elections reported that 56% of the voter registration applications ACORN turned in were ineligible. Further, a full 35% were not submitted in a timely manner, as required by law. The State Board of Elections also commented on what appeared to be evidence of intentional voter fraud. "Additionally,” they wrote, “information appears to have been altered on some applications where information given by the applicant in one color ink has been scratched through and re-entered in another color ink. Any alteration of a voter registration application is a Class 5 Felony in accordance with § 24.2-1009 of the Code of Virginia." WA 2007 Three ACORN employees pleaded guilty, and four more were charged, in the worst case of voter registration fraud in Washington state history. More than 2,000 fraudulent voter registration cards were submitted by the group during a voter registration drive.

Aside from token mentions of Colin Powell, the excludes Codi Rice, Clarence Thomas, j. C. Watts, Michael Steele Alan Keyes, and other prominent conservatives. The book focuses on how African-Americans on the political left have benefited from the civil rights movement. As near as I can tell that translates to celebrating a presidential candidate who is the product of affirmative action while dismissing African-Americans on the political right as…what? Sell outs?
