POPSUltimate Caramel Apple Pie Recipe Fill a large bowl with cold water and squeeze in the lemon juice. Peel the apples with a paring knife, cut them in half, and remove the core with a melon baller. Put the apple halves in the lemon-water (this will keep them from going brown). Toss the apples with the flour and cinnamon.

POPSSun + Water = Fuel Michael Grätzel, however, may have a clever way to turn Nocera's discovery to practical use. A professor of chemistry and chemical engineering at the École Polytechnique Fédérale in Lausanne, Switzerland, he was one of the first people Nocera told about his new catalyst. "He was so excited," Grätzel says. "He took me to a restaurant and bought a tremendously expensive bottle of wine." In 1991, Grätzel invented a promising new type of solar cell. It uses a dye containing ruthenium, which acts much like the chlorophyll in a plant, absorbing light and releasing electrons. In Grätzel's solar cell, however, the electrons don't set off a water-splitting reaction. Instead, they're collected by a film of titanium dioxide and directed through an external circuit, generating electricity. Grätzel now thinks that he can integrate his solar cell and Nocera's catalyst into a single device that captures the energy from sunlight and uses it to split water.

POPSExploding hot water heater.Mythbusters Mythbusters Funny clip Steam Power Submitted by DoctorK on Sun, 10/26/2008 - 10:51am. One of the Mythbusters shows looked at the risk of exploding water heaters. By disabling the safety valve, they got dramatic explosions, with the internal tank flying hundreds of feet in the air. Very impressive in ultra slow motion, it motivated me to (safely) flush my water heater and check the functioning of the relief valve.

POPSPurified urine to be astronauts' drinking water I thought there was a problem with purification processes not being able to eliminate hormones. On a lighter side, if they practised a certain form of yoga, they would not have to purify all of it, just keep their own for cortisone.

POPS Baby Pygmy Hippo Brings New Hope For The Endangered Species ‘We would obviously have wanted her mother to raise her, but she definitely would have died if we didn't step in.’ She weighs 3.8 kg or 8.3 lbs. (the weight of a gallon of water) Pygmy hippos are reclusive and nocturnal. Along with their much larger cousins, the common hippopotamuses, they are the only hippo species in the world. Pygmy hippos are semi-aquatic and need to live near water to keep their skin moisturised and their body cool. They sometimes even mate and give birth in water. Pygmy hippos are plant-eating mammals, feeding on ferns, broad-leaved plants, grasses and fruits they find in the forest.

POPSFollowing The Trail Of Toxic E-Waste
This is smuggling. This is illegal," says Jim Puckett, founder of the Basel Action Network, a group working to stop the dumping of toxic materials in poor countries that certifies ethical e-waste recyclers in the United States. "A lot of people are turning a blind eye here. And if somebody makes enough noise, they're afraid this is all going to dry up." E-waste workers in Guiyu, China, where Pelley's team videotaped, put up with the dangerous conditions for the $8 a day the job pays. They use caustic chemicals and burn the plastic parts to get at the valuable components, often releasing toxins that they not only inhale, but release into the air, the ground and the water. Potable water must now be trucked into Guiyu and scientists have discovered that the city has the highest levels of cancer-causing dioxins in the world. Pregnancies in Guiyu are six times more likely to result in miscarriages, and seven out of 10 children there have too much lead in their blood. Allen Hershkowitz
