Science of Search: How to Make Out, or Levitate
haraya
by haraya  7-31-2007    1
How-to searches also reveal our aspirations. Comprising 12% of the instructional searches were those questions geared towards self improvement: how to "lose weight," "gain weight," "make money," and, for those truly in search of instant gratification, "make money fast." On the darker side, over 9.5% of the searches were for illicit or illegal activities, with marijuana use figuring high on the list ("how to grow marijuana," "grow pot," "grow weed") but also some very concerning questions: "how to commit suicide," "how to make meth," even "how to make a bomb." We apparently feel comfortable enough with our computers and the Internet to query just about anything. Search continues to grow in importance as we sift through the mountain of information available to us. As the growth of "how to" searches increases, its clear that we are turning to search engines as sources of knowledge and insight into getting things done.

Too many calories send the brain off kilter
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  10-5-2008    1
The researchers report that that increased activity of the IKKß/NF-?B pathway can be divorced from obesity itself -- infusions of either glucose or fat into the brains of mice alone led to this inflammatory brain reaction. Further studies revealed that this activity in the brain leads to insulin and leptin resistance. Insulin lowers blood sugar by causing cells of the body to take it up from the bloodstream. Leptin is a fat hormone important for appetite control. Moreover, the researchers found that treatments preventing the activity of IKKß/NF-?B in the animals' brains protected them from obesity.

Almonds boost weight loss
Fast T friend
by Fast T friend  7-20-2008
According to Wien, “The weight-loss benefits of eating almonds came as something of a surprise, since the study was originally designed to evaluate the cholesterol-lowering effects of almonds. As it turned out, the dieters who ate almonds lost more weight than would be expected if they were taking prescription diet pills.”

Waste From Gut Bacteria Helps Host Control Weight
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  10-19-2008    2
Humans, like other animals, have a large and varied population of beneficial bacteria that live in the intestines. The bacteria break up large molecules that the host cannot digest. The host in turn absorbs many of the resulting small molecules for energy and nutrients. "The number of bacteria in our gut far exceeds the total number of cells in our bodies," said Dr. Yanagisawa. "It's truly a mutually beneficial relationship. We provide the bacteria with food, and in return they supply energy and nutrients," he explained.

Why do we gain weight? we eat more.
balthazarus
by balthazarus  8-4-2008    4
i know it sounds simplistic, but before linking obesity to viruses and other sophisticated theories, one should look straight to the facts, we eat more in quantities, more processed food. We are too reluctant to consciously restrict the availability that we face. a point to think about.

Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  7-31-2008
Previous work with genetically engineered mice in the Evans lab had revealed that permanently activating a genetic switch known as PPAR delta turned mice into indefatigable marathon runners. In addition to their super-endurance, the altered mice were resistant to weight gain, even when fed a high-fat diet that caused obesity in ordinary mice. On top of their lean and mean physique, their response to insulin improved, lowering levels of circulating glucose.

What is better for you, whole or skim milk? It may not be as obvious as you think...
djkraz
by djkraz  3-29-2007    4
We only have ever had whole milk in house but that's because we have had babies and young children that needed it for the last 8 years. I'm not sure I could drink anything else now without getting grossed out. I have a theory on the difference with weight gain too. I think that since whole milk is heavier and less watered down than skim milk, you are less apt to fill up on other foods that would make you gain more weight than milk does.

Some of the problems with Brain function, are directly related, and can be relieved by similar medications, we keep finding more links. Epilepsy, manic depression, bipolar disease, and psychosis among others. I am currently using a medication to prevent epileptic fits-known as an 'anticonvulsant'. This medication, and similar were used in the treatment of mood related disorders and was found to be an effective treatment for epilepsy. Antipsychotics are dangerous, obsolete, when used as medication often contribute to any problem, and can turn living into existing.

Sore throat virus linked to obesity
righthand
by righthand  8-22-2007
At Pennington biomedical centre, Louisiana State University, they collected fatty tissue from 10 patients having liposuction. They extracted stem cells from the tissue and exposed half from each patient to adenovirus-36, a cause of respiratory tract infections, diarrhoea and conjunctivitis. A week later, many stem cells exposed to the virus had been converted into early stage fat cells and begun storing fat. In samples that were not infected, a third as many stem cells had become fat cells. "We're not saying that a virus is the only cause of obesity, but this study provides stronger evidence that some obesity cases may involve viral infections," Dr Pasarica told the annual meeting of the American Chemical Society in Boston.
