Iraqi oil up for sale
boozich
by boozich  10-13-2008    4
If the conspiracy theory that western oil companies egged on U.S. and British governments to invade Iraq were true, the plan could backfire on them and benefit rivals in Asia instead, he said, adding: “It is possible the American Army has provided the economic stability that will encourage Malaysian, Chinese and other Asian companies to become involved.”

Crisis marks the end of Western economic hegemony
masbury
by masbury  10-15-2008
Used to be that other regions got in financial trouble and were forced to submit to the IMF's rules. Now the west is in trouble, Asia holds the cash, and we owe them. This marks a major shift in who decides how the world's economy will work - de-legitimizing, for instance, the G-7. And the G-7 don't realize it yet.

Russia Not Immune to American Influence
klippety
by klippety  9-17-2008    2
Perhaps to undermine the Russian Bear and China, this crisis will benefit some of the architects of doom. If the energy market of Russia and China's relentless expansion are threatening American interest, ie, oil, so why not create a crisis that takes most down and rewards the few we all know?

Russia vs. Georgia or US Proxy War with Russia?
blueridge
by blueridge  8-12-2008    5
THE COLD WAR IS BACK ON. Putin is ticked at Bush. Russia conducted it appears, a pre-emptive strike. Let's compare US and Russia media sources to see each side of the story. Russia's government says this looks like Iraq (Bush's war) and Kosovo (Clinton's war, condemned by republicans) all over again! Americans should play the skeptic and consider domestic media as propaganda (as usual). Pravda: "The further the situation unfolds, the more the world will understand that Georgia would never be able to do all this without America. South Ossetian defense officials used to make statements about imminent aggression from Georgia , but the latter denied everything, whereas the US Department of State released no comments on the matter. In essence, they have prepared the force, which destroys everything in South Ossetia, attacks civilians and hospitals. They are responsible for this. The world community will learn about it,” /quote]

Beijings Iconic Landmarks' Very Western Look
merrie
by merrie  7-20-2008
The eye-catching building, which is nearly finished, will be the headquarters of China Central Television, the staid propaganda arm of China's ruling Communist Party, and it's perhaps the boldest and most daring of several new buildings that have given Beijing a stunning new appearance for the upcoming Summer Olympic Games. The last of them is the new television building, the CCTV headquarters, and it can nearly make one dizzy standing on the ground and looking up at its odd, teetering 49-story towers connected by a multistory, cantilevered, jagged cross section over open space at a vertiginous 36 stories up in the air. Designed by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, the building has been called an "angular marvel" and a "dazzling reinvention of the skyscraper." Its engineering is so complex that the designers say such a building couldn't have been built a few years ago. That's because it took immense computing power. http://www.mcclatchydc.com/264/story/44618.html

About eggs
Socratoad
by Socratoad  7-11-2008    4
"Eggs have been known to, and enjoyed by, humans for many centuries. Jungle fowl were domesticated in India by 3200 B.C.E. Record from China and Egypt show that fowl were domesticated and laying eggs for human consumption around 1400 B.C.E., and there is archaeoligical evidence for egg consumption dating back to the Neolithic age. The Romans found egg-laying hens in England, Gaul, and among the Germans. The first domesticated fowl reached North America with the second voyage of Columbus in 1493." ---Encyclopedia of Food and Culture, Solomon H. Katz, editor, William Woys Weaver, associate editor 2003, Volume 1 (p. 558)
