A Credit Crisis or a Collapsing Ponzi Scheme?
prin1
by prin1  11-16-2008
the scheme is exposed, because when legal authorities begin examining accounting records of the so-called enterprise they find that many of the 'assets' that should exist do not." here’s where we are today. The promoters have clearly not vanished as in outcome 1. In fact, they are behaving as if they know they have nothing to fear. We are definitely seeing all the signs of outcome 2: the scheme is collapsing under its own weight; there are panic runs around the globe wherever Wall Street has left its footprint. outcome 3 Instead of arresting the perpetrators and shutting down the schemes, Federal authorities have developed their own new schemes and pumped over $2 trillion of taxpayer money into propping up the firms while leaving the schemers in place. Equally astonishing, Congress has not held any meaningful investigations. This has left many Wall Street veterans wondering if the problem isn’t that the firms are “too big to fail” but rather “too Ponzi-like to prosecute.

The Genius of Photography vs. Susan Sontag's On Photography
zizzy
by zizzy  11-10-2008    3
 |quote]Sontag argues that the proliferation of photographic practice has long begun to establish within people a "chronic voyeuristic relation" to the world around them. And that therefore the meaning of all events is somewhat leveled to an unhealthy degree. As she argues, this fosters an attitude of anti-intervention. Within this it's felt that the photographer should leave their subject, whether it be a person or an event, to its own devices while being photographed, regardless of the moral character of the subject. The justification comes in the idea that the resulting photographs will be documents, representations of events already in motion, in the name of truth and enlightenment. Sontag goes even further to say that the individual who seeks to photographically record cannot intervene, and that the person who intervenes cannot then faithfully record, for the two aims contradict each other. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_Photography Just something I'm pondering.

Normally I don't make clips of other clippers, especially the ignorant, abusive or stupid, but considering that we have had 7 long years of this filth, it is time we stood up and said: SHOVE IT! Just because you have no self-respect doesn't mean we have to put up with your stupidity. I now expect more of this coming from the viral elements of American society. Brace yourself, it will get ugly.

De essentie van Web2.0
HobbeLink
by HobbeLink  11-4-2008

Can You Say "Tonton Macoute" Under "Papa Doc" Duvalier?
Alexian
by Alexian  11-3-2008    1
"The name Tonton Macoute (literally translates as "Uncle Gunnysack") originated from Haitian Creole mythology. It was the name of a bogeyman who walked the streets after dark, kidnapping children who stayed out too late and stowing them away in his gunnysack, never to be seen again. Those who spoke out against Duvalier would disappear in the night, and would never be seen again. Anyone who spoke about the MSVN risked their own abduction, and so they were referred to as theTonton Macoutes."as explained in Wikipedia

Poll says race won't be big factor in USA vote
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  10-24-2008    3
7 out of 10 doesn't sound that good but the pollster points out this goes both ways. I think McCain's age is has the greatest prejudice; old people say this as well. This also points out another problem: Media Driven Issues. The media has just been making up one issue after another than is not an issue to nobody else but them: media fabricated issues...and often just to raise hackles or excitement and thus have more people tune in. With race, it's been called: The Bradley Effect. (See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bradley_effect ) It basically means white folks will hide their racial prejudice when polled, thus polls will be off. But that was 26 years ago. Times have changed. There is NO Bradley Effect anymore (well...if so, certainly much much less) This is shown -- documented by elections of other Afro-American candidates in the 21st century, like in a race for governor in 2006; polls were fine. Wikipedia and the Meaning of Truth
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  10-23-2008    6
These policies have become the social contract for Wikipedia's army of apparently insomniac volunteers. Thanks to them, incorrect information generally disappears quite quickly. So how do the Wikipedians decide what's true and what's not? On what is their epistemology based? Unlike the laws of mathematics or science, wikitruth isn't based on principles such as consistency or observability. It's not even based on common sense or firsthand experience. Wikipedia has evolved a radically different set of epistemological standards--standards that aren't especially surprising given that the site is rooted in a Web-based community, but that should concern those of us who are interested in traditional notions of truth and accuracy. On Wikipedia, objective truth isn't all that important, actually. What makes a fact or statement fit for inclusion is that it appeared in some other publication--ideally, one that is in English and is available free online. "The threshold for inclusion in Wiki

Public discussion about this revolution was suppressed in Hungary for over 30 years, but since the thaw of the 1980s it has been a subject of intense study and debate. At the inauguration of the Third Hungarian Republic in 1989, 23 October was declared a national holiday.
