Nuclear Fusion Will Become Reality by 2011
Mohir
by Mohir  11-16-2008    3
In its National Ignition Facility (NIF), LLNL will have a laser capable of heating plasma to the absurdly-high temperatures needed for nuclear fusion. The completion of the device is scheduled for 2009, whereas the first test will begin in 2010. Researchers at the lab are confident that, by 2011, they could obtain sustainable and entirely controllable fusion. The year of 2020 was set as a marker for the construction of the first commercial power plant, to employ the new technology. If their endeavors are successful, then the world could see a major transformation, as far as energy production goes. Having a reliable and perfectly safe source of power will virtually eliminate the need for fossil-fuel power plants, and even wind and solar farms will become obsolete. In order for this to happen, governments worldwide will have to make a huge financial effort, to install these energy-producing plants across their territories.

Valkyrie For War Czar

that in the event of blood actually being shed, all operations should be immediately terminated and forces extricated in the most humiliating way possible, with strategy to be determined by regular polling. However, that was the 1990s, and we also know that in the post-9/11 era, Clinton briefly grew a set and strongly favored invading the heck out of belligerents who had made her husband look like an ineffective skirt-chaser. It was only the prospect of being president herself that made Hillary turn into a peacenik, but we know from the Democratic primary that Hillary does not give up. She will gouge the eyeballs out of anyone who stands in her way. News reports indicate we are being increasingly quagmirized by a bunch of 19th-century dishcloth-wearing savages in the rocky passes of the Hindu Kush, with al-Qaeda thumbing its aquiline nose from across the border in Waziristan, and the mullahs of Iran insisting on becoming a world-class nuisance, not to mention the Putinistas

Greens Pave Way for Republican Comeback

than most other sorts of development, whether they be new or expanding suburban communities, roads, farming or a green energy projects -- like wind farms, solar panel fields, and cellulosic ethanol plants. Consider, for example, how much “fragile” environment would be disturbed by T. Boone Pickens’ plan to build the largest wind farm in the world on 400,000 acres in the Texas panhandle. While the Greens say they support Pickens’ effort, in what way is the Texas panhandle less fragile than the Utah desert? Last spring, the BLM placed a moratorium on solar power projects to be built on public lands, pending environmental impact studies. The necessary transmission lines and water use might disturb the native vegetation and wildlife, says the BLM. But the solar power industry screamed bloody murder and the moratorium was soon rescinded. Given that the Greens oppose oil and gas drilling everywhere, the rest of us -- especially congressional Republicans --

Looking for Carbon in Renewable Energy
odiedog

Renewable Energy Credits are designed to spur the development of renewable energy by selling the rights to its environmental benefits. Carbon credits often aim to do much the same thing. Can the two get along? The Ecosystem Marketplace examines the role of RECs in a carbon economy.

People Power Can Beat Climate Change
thisnamecantbetaken

Engaging communities involves a lot more than simply asking for sacrifices. A supportive planning system and the guarantee of a stable, premium price for energy sold back to the grid has given people an incentive to join forces and create renewable energy. At a time of economic downturn and rising fuel costs, it is hard to imagine that the advantages of this opportunity to develop sustainable income streams would be lost on the general public. It offers politicians, business and investors the opportunity to unleash an entrepreneurial spirit capable of reaping financial and environmental returns for both the people and the planet.

Rebuilding the Electricity Grid
Andrew Gillies
by Andrew Gillies  11-10-2008
Pair my colleague Andy Stone's story with Al Gore's op-ed in the New York Times this weekend. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/09/opinion/09gore.html?ref=opinion . There, Gore calls for "the planning and construction of a unified national smart grid for the transport of renewable electricity from the rural places where it is mostly generated to the cities where it is mostly used." Stone's story fleshes out the matter.

A "Magic 60" Senate Seats in Obama Landslided?
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  10-26-2008
Leaders of the Democratic party are now publicaly saying it's possible they may wind up with 60 Democratic Senators in this years elections that now are increasingly looking like a landslide victory. This would give them total unchecked political power (except for the courts). They call the 60 total the "Magic 60," because this would prevent the opposition party from doing a filibuster, stalling passage of legislation by talking and talking and talking. This has been one of the Democrats excuses the past two years,BTW, for not doing anything to live up to their promises to stop the Iraq War and others things. But I don't like this excuse; it's a lie: a filibuster doesn't stop legislation, it only stalls it. If the Democrats wanted to fight they could have made the Republicans get real and actually try a filibuster and just out-talk them. Period. Plus, 51% of the vote rules and changes anything in our Democracy. The filibuster rule could have been changed. Anyhow...now

The Relationship Between the Media and Society
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  10-24-2008    2
The result is a society dotted with a few people that feel they are capable and worthy and large numbers of people who feel that they do not measure up, believing themselves to be too much or too little of one thing or another; too fat, too thin; too short, too tall; not smart enough or not pretty enough; too different from what is considered acceptable. In the process, worthwhile individuals with much to offer, people who may hold ideas and suggestions for improving the world for all, become silenced, and society becomes the ultimate loser. For many years, the media has been telling people what is socially acceptable, what is valuable, encouraging some and limiting others; perhaps it's time the people begin telling the media that more positive, life-affirming messages are warranted.

The Solar Plan
akipta
by akipta  10-19-2008
The most valuable resource of light and heat comes from the sun, and helps to create many other underused natural resources like wind generation and hydroelectric power. This solar energy can and should be harnessed in much greater ways than it is today. To reduce the burdens on the environment, mankind must learn to save energy and to use it more rationally, as well as to grasp and use the most important natural source of energy - the sun - as the source for our planet's energy supply. This site has been created to help you learn about solar planning, designing, and to offer you resources for finding alternative energy products that you can use in your solar planning.

"We The People" Have The Ingenuity & The Resources
merrie
by merrie  10-15-2008
WE HAVE THE POWER. Today, America is under assault from key oil producing states - some of which are radical regimes whose energy prices and policies are systematically undermining our economy, our national security, and the American way of life. We pay a hefty ransom - two billion dollars every day - to the likes of Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Venezuela, among other foreign powers. Americans are sick and tired of our broken energy policy. WE HAVE THE POWER highlights America's need to adopt our World War II mentality of "Do it all, Do it now" by tapping into all of our abundant energy resources . We owe it to future generations to explore the vast amount of oil and gas in the Outer Continental Shelf, Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), as well as our other vital energy resources including Hydroelectric Power, Wind Power, Oil Shale, Natural Gas, Gas Hydrates, Hydrogen, BioFuels, Solar Power, Clean Coal and Nuclear Power.
