POPSFaroe Islands Barbarity abounds on the beautiful islands of Faroe. Can we excuse the bloodthirsty slaughter of these intelligent creatures on the basis that animals in food production also suffer, or that it's part of their culture, as some people do? Of course not! Quite apart from the fact that two wrongs do not make a right, if we justified this barbarity on the grounds of culture we'd also have to accept the practice of child marriage, suttee, clitorendectomies etc. Note too that the meat is not eaten...the animals are left to rot because heavy metal contamination renders their meat useless for human consumption according to EU standards for for human food. Aren't we a wonderful species - NOT!

POPSChicago Had Another Great One Chicago ... long before it was fascinated by Barak Obama it had the good fortune to be enchanted by another coloured man who was most insulted and adored and respected too by everyone that had an ear for music, the greatest entertainer of his times, the inimitable ugly and lovely Sammy Davis Jr. You can easily find him in You Tube, Google and nuTsie.com. You will discover a new world ... the world of our times ... am 72.

POPSA Powerful Love Story This is a wonderful film for all women everywhere. I do like the novel better (I love Fannie Flagg) but it's charming and full of empowerment. I wanna go visit the Whistle Stop Cafe because the town loves and accepts everyone that society tells them not to. The best line in the film for me was when Ruth was asked why she ran away from her husband to shack up with Igdie and she asserts, "Because she's the best friend I've ever had, and I love her." Do yourself a favor and watch it with someone special--for the first time or again :)

POPSMysterious people who appeared in the village of Woolpit in Suffolk, UK, in the 12th century. The children were brother and sister and they had green colored skin. Their appearance was normal in all other areas. They spoke an unrecognized language and refused to eat anything other than pitch from bean pods. Eventually their skin lost its green color. When they learned English they explained that they were from the ‘Land of St Martin’ which was a dark place because the sun never rose far above the horizon. They claimed that they were tending their father’s herd and followed a river of light when they heard the sounds of bells - finding themselves in Woolpit. Some of the more unusual theories proposed for the origin of the children are that they were Hollow Earth children, parallel dimension children, or Extraterrestrial children.

POPSDo Dolphins Have a Sense of the Future? I had a wonderful experience with a mated pair of Hawaiian Bottlenose dolphins...When I was on a longliner Tuna boat we would stop for lunch at the end of the flagline and one day a male dolphin stuck his nose on the gunwale edge and squawked loudly and then swam a sort distance back down the line...then back and repeated the message...we ran down the line until we found his mate, who had tried to steal our bait (Look, honey, free breakfast!) and got hooked on her lip! rather than tear her lip she sent Hubby to us for the rescue! I swear she sat her cute little nose on the gunwale and patiently waited while I removed the hook...thanked us with a flip and some clicxkin, squeeling and swam off! Amazing! This was my first falling in love with Dolphins and Whales came later.

POPSWhere Wings Take Dream "It's a myth to think I don't know what's going on" "I mean, I read the newspaper, I mean, I read the headlines" "I think we agree, the past is over" "It'll take time to restore chaos and order" "Wow! Brazil is big!" "I'm glad my Vice President is not running for President Not that he would make a great President" "It's important to think beyond the old days of when we had the concept that if we blew each other up, the world would be safe" "I hope the ambitious realize that they are more likely to succeed with success as opposed to failure" "I think the president has to be smart" I just picked some 'favourites'. Go to the source for the whole long speech, written entirely with Bushisms. . .:)

POPSCandid Early Photos of Obama Campaigning - Time Some wonderful pictures of the early days of Barack "Barry" Obama's presidential campaign. The ones with him and his family are especially sweet. I'm glad the photographer was there to capture these images. Whether he makes president or not, I believe Mr. Obama will go on to be an influential world leader.

POPSNovember 11: The Charlie Brown story.. wonderful war story This true story, untold for years and years, has become somewhat of a legend in recent years since pilot Lt. Charles Brown actually met Franz Stigler, the German pilot who, instead of shooting down Charlie Brown, led his crippled bomber back to England. Another wonderful calendar-driven story from Eric "CalendarWallah" Snyder. I love to use the Multicultural calendar to bring the richness and realities of history to life.

POPS"A Window into the Future of Sound" continues Like many wonderful discoveries, the first example here arose from failure. In an attempt by the UK Ministry of Defense to find a suitable sound dampening material for their helicopters, they instead stumbled upon a unique honeycomb structure that conducts sound with surprising efficiency. The technology has since been sold to NXT Sound; marketed as SurfaceSound, the innovative design is being crafted into folding flat-panel speakers (14 mm thick) and "speakerless" automobile interiors and mobile phones.

POPSTake a Bow, America It can be easy in such a moment of triumph to lose sight of the agony wrought by the unrelieved evil of racism and to forget how crucial a role anti-black racism played in shaping American life since the first slaves were dumped ashore 400 years ago. Blacks have been holding fast to the promise of America for all that time. Not without anger. Not without rage. But with a fidelity that in the darkest moments — those moments when the flow of blood seemed like it would never stop, when enslaved families were wrenched apart, when entire communities were put to the torch, when the breeze put the stiffened bodies of lynched victims in motion, when even small children were murdered and Dr. King was taken from us — even in those dire moments, African-Americans held fast to the promise of America with a fidelity that defied logic.

POPSLeave Our Sex Alone "These treasures are so personal, so exclusively private and our own, and at the same time so irrelevant to the lives of others, that, really, the pleasures of our own flesh are the most natural and innocent of all pleasures human beings pursue. Enjoyment our own bodies and those of other people in consensual harmony takes resources away from no starving people; it exploits no one, nor defrauds them of their labor. It humiliates no one and costs nothing. It is so purely human, innocent and wonderful that it is no wonder that organized humanity has gotten jealous of our ownership of it, and so eager to drag it kicking and screaming into the public eye, where it can be "defined" and dirtied, lied about, battered in filth and deep-fried in faith to create this new, needlessly unhealthy monstrosity."

POPSYES WE CAN! YES WE MUST! The new motto "YES WE CAN" now is followed by "YES WE MUST" I have seen this future present. I knew it was coming. But even that knowing paled to the reality that is. Hopes are high as are expectations. And usually with that comes a sense of trepidation, "What if...?" But to any who may, once the elation has subsided to just an overwhelming sense of joy, experience hesitation at the task at hand, I say to you one foot in front of the other, one breath at a time, good things came to those who waited. Keep that hope alive. Know that our future is in our capable hands as we demonstrated this past Tuesday. Stand together, hold each other up and continue being the wonderful you that you are. Yes, the challenges are many and difficult, but just look at what we have done. When the call came we rose to the occasion. We always have, we always will because... ..."YES WE CAN, YES WE MUST" ~peace, love, flan

POPSObama Victory - Most Shown Headline Photo
I actually had to hunt for it (for a whole 7 minutes) on the Internet, but one TV news report showed the Headlines from newspapers around the country and this was the photo on most of them. Interesting. Good slide show on this page, including lots of the Main Man surrounded by flags and massive crowds and celebration on all sides. A lot of First Families have been somewhat stiff and scripted or set up for phony poses. But when Michelle led her children out onto the stage is was real: She wanted them to see and get a sense of who their Dad now was ('cause he's just a "Dad," to them) And when she smiled it was a real smile. And when she and Obama hugged it was a real hug and when she looked at him in some amazement and admiration it was real amazement and admiration. And the kids happiness with them and their love of the kids also real. It was wonderful to see. And that dress! -- sort of unusual but certainly not shy Now we'' be watching them for eight years. I hope

POPSWonderful images relayed by satellites dotted around the globe Once upon a time, in the far, far away land of Techgeeks lived two university pals named Larry Page and Sergey Brin. They spent long hours dreaming of a company that one day would be the biggest search engine in the world, offering mere mortals the opportunity to traverse the great plains of the planet without moving their lazy asses.

POPSTomorrow I start the best job in the world. I worked as a teacher for 14 years at Grangewood School (a wonderful little special school) until alcohol started ruining my life. Now eight years on and six months sober I am returning in a different capacity; as an intervenor for a lovely six year old lad who is deaf-blind and mentally impaired. I can't wait to get started. :-)
