A Conservative For Obama
dmegivern
by dmegivern  9-22-2008    5
I saw this clipped earlier, but I didn't realize the gravity of the endorsement. Wow, a publisher of the National Review saying, "But I now see that Obama is almost the ideal candidate for this moment in American history. I disagree with him on many issues. But those don’t matter as much as what Obama offers, which is a deeply conservative view of the world. Nobody can read Obama’s books (which, it is worth noting, he wrote himself) or listen to him speak without realizing that this is a thoughtful, pragmatic, and prudent man. "

Why is fast food so cheap?
bignosemousie
by bignosemousie  4-18-2007    4
"Many consumers would like to support skilled farmers who produce healthy products, are good stewards of their land, work to preserve clean water and open spaces around our communities, and are contributing to a secure food system. Our representatives need to know this is the kind of farming we want to support with our tax dollars in the new 2007 Farm Bill. " See source for links, information and opportunities for change. Goodbye To Faulty Software?
Mohir
by Mohir  7-19-2008    1
The program that performs the computation is equivalent to the proof of the theorem. By proving the theorem the program is guaranteed to be correct. It is not that simple, of course, but so promising is type theory that since 1989 the EU has been funding a string of projects to develop it under the Future and Emerging Technologies programme. That style of working is going to change so that we spend more effort on actually writing programs than testing them.

A Third Way?
thisnamecantbetaken

Social democratic policies actually enhance individual rights by raising the standard of living of the great majority of the population, increasing social mobility, raising the power of workers and consumers in society. The unregulated market that fiscal conservatives advocate is incapable of addressing global poverty and inequality in an equitable way. Social democracy stabilises economic conditions by providing economic security to individuals and eliminating the threat of extreme poverty. By restricting some economic rights, social democracy makes the market more fair (for small businesses and consumers, for example). The argument that social democratic governments spend too much and run up deficits is undermined by the record of conservative administrations (e.g. in the United States and the United Kingdom) which have run up unprecedented deficits.

Three Orphaned Lion Cubs Being Bottle-Fed By Zookeepers
merrie
by merrie  7-15-2008    5
White lions are regarded as a rarity in the wild. In captivity, however, it seems a different story. In fact three white cubs were born to another lioness at the zoo in Schloss Holte-Stukenbrock, south-west of Hamburg, at exactly the same time. She however, was happy to raise her litter herself. Fortunately these two-week-old white lion cubs are in good hands with the zoo keepers adopting the maternal role. In captivity, both male and female lions, who are unusually social compared to other cats, can live for over 20 years. The German public has a soft spot for orphaned animals. Knut, the first polar bear born in Berlin Zoo for 30 years, became a national celebrity after his mother rejected him. Life, however, hasn't been easy for the bear who attracts at least 200 visitors a day. He is said to have become addicted to human attention. 'Knut is a problem bear who has become addicted to human beings,' German animal rights activist Frank Albrecht said.

While relaxing on my day off work I just wanted to tune in and turn off. I got stuck in "A shot of love with Tila Tequila" marathon. All the elements here big time, but a new twist. Bisexuality and a "social experiment". Who would Tila pick? More importantly, who would want Tila I asked myself. But that's another question. Would she pick a woman or a man? Would she break out of her heterosexual world? Or would she stick with the safe, the familiar? Was she using her coming out of the closet for a gimmick? (debby thinks so) So, I had to watch the season finale last night. *LOL* I fell asleep and my poor husband had to endure it! Of course, she picked the guy. DUH. I could see lesbians being upset, and heterosexuals being vindicated. And bisexuals? OMG, this has done NOTHING for their image. I need to stick to PBS.

It's been nearly 128 years, and still no woman has made it to the White House. No person of color has even made it to the Vice Presidency. Money is still a major obstacle for candidates. The private lives of public figures are still an issue. Victoria Woodhull and Frederick Douglass are two very key figures in our nation's history, sadly, not many people know about them. They are both very interesting people who lived extraordinary lives, click the links and read about them, I have included links for both.

That's What I Said!
DizzyDezzi
by DizzyDezzi  6-8-2007    1
The killer: the Democrats were the ones who made it happen, a mere two weeks after Congressional leaders announced that they were going to let Title V, Section 510 abstinence-only-education funding die without reauthorization. Prior to this painful backstab, the Dems had given us the impression that these medically inaccurate programs, full of "false, misleading, or distorted information" -- as confirmed in Representative Henry A. Waxman's "The Content of Federally Funded Abstinence-Only Education Programs" report -- would be cut or eliminated by our new Congress. Instead, we're faced with an additional $27.8 million for this reprehensible approach to human sexuality education, not only hailing the failing White House Chief's delusional efforts, but providing a whopping tax dollar waste of $141 million to CBAE.

Private internet access-How to Bypass firewall restrictions
pokkets

Employer and school networks, often have restrictions, and firewalls, which prevent access to certain sites, or protocols, simply because they're popular.eg(Myspace). Most traffic is monitored, and while the application is subject to particular situations, the tips can provide a means of private unmonitored access, with a few qualifications, like keylogging programs, after all the work has been done. The page continues with the links to further steps, and can also provide a greater understanding of firewalls, and their weak spots.

Church and State Blurring in Missouri
laceym

Since faith-based programs have not demonstrated their efficacy (and are actually judged by different standards, at least at the federal level), this sounds like a problem for Missouri taxpayers. Being asked to fund faith-based programs without evidence that such programs work as well as their secular alternatives should be a concern. Then again, I suppose if there was evidence that such programs worked, they wouldn't need to be called faith-based, would they? AR

Social welfare programs do not keep a country from prosperity
Lexica
by Lexica  9-25-2008    5
The Nordic states have also worked to keep social expenditures compatible with an open, competitive, market-based economic system. Tax rates on capital are relatively low. Labor market policies pay low-skilled and otherwise difficult-to-employ individuals to work in the service sector, in key quality-of-life areas such as child care, health, and support for the elderly and disabled. The results for the households at the bottom of the income distribution are astoundingly good, especially in contrast to...American social policy. The U.S. spends less than almost all rich countries on social services for the poor and disabled, and it gets what it pays for: the highest poverty rate among the rich countries and an exploding prison population. Actually, by shunning public spending on health, the U.S. gets much less than it pays for, because its dependence on private health care has led to a ramshackle system that yields mediocre results at very high costs.

I had Answers installed on my computer and didn't like it. Later, I gave the extension a try. Didn't like it. Well I thought I'd give the new version of the extension a shot and, Lord have mercy my people, this thing smokes! Incredibly fast and intuitive. You don't even need to highlight. I don't know how it does it but, for instance, I clicked on Earth Wind and Fire--just like this, complete, not EWF, and BOOM! chackalackalacka, there's the little popup with info, links, and pictures. You got to check this thing.
