POPSRon Mueck's Amazing Sculptures
Ron Mueck is a London-based photo-realist artist. Born in Melbourne,Australia, to parents who were toy makers, he labored on children's television shows for 15 years before working in special effects for such films as Labyrinth, a 1986 fantasy epic starring David Bowie. Eventually Mueck concluded that photography pretty much destroys the physical presence of the original object, and so he turned to fine art and sculpture. In the early 1990's, still in his advertising days, Mueck was commissioned to make something highly realistic, and was wondering what material would do the trick. Latex was the usual, but he wanted something harder, more precise. Luckily, he saw a little architectural decor on the wall of a boutique and inquired as to the nice, pink stuff's nature. Fiberglass resin was the answer, and Mueck has made it his bronze and marble ever since. His work is lifelike but not life size, and being face to face with the tiny, gossiping Two Women (2005) or the monumental woma

POPSNSW church-state deal 'hampering ethics education' This will change, it's older than me. Remember Religious Instruction as a waste of time. The volunteers were unable to control classes, the kids learnt nothing and many wanted to opt out when there weren't mobs of rewards. So much is put on teachers these days, such as ethics lessons. I taught ethics (non religious) from the first time I walked into a classroom and most teachers do the same.

POPSEmployer Based Benefits: An Eroding Model For Health Insurance During her pregnancy, Jennifer Danylyshyn's regular visits to her obstetrician were covered by her Blue Shield policy. So was the delivery of Ava on March 24. The couple expected that Ava would be covered as a matter of course. When the company rejected the baby because of the hip misalignment, her parents appealed with the help of their pediatrician. Blue Shield refused to budge.

POPSSchool bags can be a pain in the neck When i went to school the textbooks weighed a ton, but I end up working out how to strap my bag to an airport trolly, and tow it behind my bike. Never had any trouble. at least not with my bike. School on the other hand was one of my pet hates, but i worked out how to make it so they weren't looking for me, then i could go home...but that's another story

POPSNewsweek: Education system is broken As a former NYC teaching fellow (similar program to Teach for America), I agree: 1. The educational system is broken. 2. The impact of an uneducated populace cannot be underestimated. However, I strongly disagree that teachers are the single most important factor in student achievement. As a teacher in a crisis school (and now a parent), I strongly believe that PARENTS are the single most important factor in student achievement. Quality teachers ARE correlated with student achievement, because the best teachers find the highest job satisfaction in working with families that embrace the responsibility of learning. Schools with responsible, engaged parents CAN and do attract and retain good teachers. The key to solving the educational crisis is to engage and equip parents LONG before their children reach school age, since the first 5 years are the most critical years of development. For one creative way to do just that, check out tumblon.com.

POPSWhat Do You Expect When You Give Your Kids Fast Food This study should have been a big DUH to most parents out there. The majority of the "restaurants" in this study were fast food chains. What do you expect from fast food? Whether it says "kids meal" or not, if it's at a fast food place, it's very likely not going to be healthy and nutritious. In these places, "kids meals" are often just marketing ploys based on popular kids shows or toys. They're not nutritionally balanced to truly be healthy for a child. Raising kids is a huge challenge, and with parents often working in addition to raising kids, they often need to find fast options to make things work. But you have to realize if you're getting fast food, it's not going to be healthy for your child.

POPSFamily Details Troubled Life Of Man Behind Rampage But then, he said, a Jewish watchdog group stole her away in the dead of night and returned her to her family. Shortly afterward, he was sent to prison for a year, for what other family members and police said were drug-related charges. “The problems started after he was in jail. After he came out of jail, he was always alone. … He is a good man, but after prison, he was confused and nervous,” his cousin said. However, his family arranged a marriage with a young woman from his village, and they now have two young sons. Israeli police spent Wednesday afternoon interrogating his family but then left, and have said they believe he was acting alone.

POPSItipini Community Project & Mthatha Mission I've been following Jesse Zink's blog Mthatha Mission for many months. When I ran across the video today, which incorporates some of his photos, I put the the video and Jesse's excellent blog together to share both with others who may not know of the work being done to help the people who, by accident of birth, live in the Itipini community outside Mthatha, South Africa.

POPSSettlement in NY lawsuit over NBC's 'Predator' What interest me in The predator series also makes me wonder if it is a set up. maybe we have been overzealous in trying to prosecute every person who ever chat in such site. I never doubt some of them is guilty but you still cannot prosecute someone for chating. I have a friend in college who once got so drunk and went on Greyhound. He accidentally brushed against a little girl. The parents screamed MOLESTATION and a MOP formed and beat the shit out of him. The police came and threw him in county jail for 5 days . It took another 2 years of legal fighting to clear his name before every charges was dropped.

POPSCambodian children march against child labour I love the last paragraph. Bastard - it is the standard reply from politicians when questioned on child exploitation. If I had ten bucks for every time I have heard or read those exact same sentiments......

POPS15,000 pilgrims to pump up to $400,000 into economy Mr Joyce, whose parents Don and Brenda Joyce run Wangaratta Coachlines, estimated around $400,000 would be spent in the local community. "We believe this event will provide a fantastic boost for the local business community as we are spending dollars locally, rather than bringing everything into the town from external locations," he said. Equipment hire, catering, food and beverage, and fuel is being sourced locally, with several people employed as venue managers, and some 50 to 60 volunteers to be recruited from local parishes, schools and community groups. Mr Joyce, who has previously worked on the Commonwealth Games, World Swimming Championships and last year’s APEC meeting, said the event, which is expected to draw more than 220,000 pilgrims, has been a big challenge.

POPSSex Ed Teacher Answers Student Questions on Masturbation, Parents Seek Criminal Charges This type of fear based mentality on the side of parents and school administrators is a large part of the reason teens struggle with sexual issues. Parents don't want to talk about it...prosecute teachers who try to answer the students questions...and yet we ask "Oh my! What has happened to our youth? Where have we gone wrong?" These parents need to be sued for utter stupidity. Don't attack a Sex-Ed teacher for trying to answer legitimate questions! If they want to control the minds of their children...HOME SCHOOL them in a church basement somewhere and mind the shackles please, they tend to come loose with time and age.
