Armistice Day November 11, 1918
merrie
by merrie  11-12-2008    1
The armistice was formally signed in Foch's railway carriage on 11 November (in 1940 Hitler exacted revenge by forcing the French to sign an armistice - on German terms - in the same railway carriage). The armistice initially ran for 30 days but was regularly renewed until the formal peace treaty was signed at Versailles the following year. Should the Germans have deviated in any way from the terms of the armistice the Allies warned that a resumption of hostilities would begin within 48 hours. The terms of the armistice required the Germans to evacuate German-occupied territories on the Western Front within two weeks. Allied forces were to occupy the left bank of the Rhine within a month, and a neutral zone established on the right bank. The Legacy of Keynes
Rustee
by Rustee  11-2-2008
In the Keynesian framework, the largest chunk of spending is on account of consumer outlays. Therefore consumer outlays are regarded as the motor of the economy — consumption sets in motion real economic growth. But is consumption the motor of the economy? We suggest that one must make a distinction between productive and nonproductive consumption. While productive consumption is an agent of economic growth, nonproductive consumption leads to economic impoverishment.

'Share the Wealth' With the World?
jatfla
by jatfla  11-1-2008
Because of these and other statements, I *know* Sen. Obama agrees with Rev. Wright and all that he heard while sitting in his church. I suppose instead of making "profits", he can just print money and spread it around the world. Of course the IMF, the World Bank and the UN (and the US) have pour billions into poverty and 3rd world nations/territories. And soon, we'll be poverty-stricken also! This man sounds like my 8 yr. old who, when he wants something says "Just use Paw-Paw's credit card".

USA Disdain for EU Must End with Bush's departure.
ratcatcher2
by ratcatcher2  10-31-2008
As Naomi Klein and others have noted, this order contravened international law. The 1907 Hague convention requires an occupying power to respect the laws of the country it has invaded. Before Silverberg, Washington's chief representative in Europe was Clayland Boyden Gray. As the grandson of Bowman Gray, who owned Reynolds Tobacco, he inherited a vast fortune gained from the industry. It is only fitting, then, that he has spent much of his professional life trying to water down environmental and public health rules including the landmark clean air act.

Why Is The LA Times Refusing To Release Obama~Khalidi Tape?
merrie
by merrie  10-29-2008    6
The American people have the right to make an informed choice and this tape is important to understanding who Barack Obama is and what he believes. Release the tape. McCain campaign accuses L.A. Times of 'suppressing' Obama video http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-video29-2008oct29,0,5458024.story In reporting on Obama's presence at the dinner for Khalidi, the article noted that some speakers expressed anger at Israel and at U.S. foreign policy, but that Obama in his comments called for finding common ground. It said that Khalidi in the 1970s often spoke to reporters on behalf of the Palestine Liberation Organization. Khalidi later lived near Obama while teaching at the University of Chicago. He is now a professor of Arab studies at Columbia University in New York.

A Look at Avebury Circle
cakebelly
by cakebelly  10-29-2008    2
continues As originally constructed, Avebury Henge consisted of a large stone circle around the inside the bank and ditch, with two smaller inner circles. There were two ceremonial avenues: the West Kennet Avenue (made of 100 pairs of stones), entering on the south side; and the Beckhampton Avenue, entering the west causeway. Inside the Northern Inner Circle was the Cove, which may have been aligned on the moon's northernmost rising point. The Southern Inner Circle had a great Obelisk in the center (now lost). Much still remains to be studied about Avebury, and much about its construction and purpose remains a mystery. The stones remained intact but unused throughout the later prehistoric periods. It is not known why the site was abandoned, but Stonehenge was likewise left behind. Archaeological finds show that the site may have been visited by the Romans as a curiosity.

If Entire Countries Go Broke, We'll Go With Them
brightlight4
by brightlight4  10-25-2008
The root of today's credit crisis is not that the world lacks money; the world is awash in cash, with $6 trillion sitting idly in global money markets alone. But if countries start to fail, the remainder of the world's investment capital could be spooked out of productive investments as well. Nor do we have the tools to avert disaster. The International Monetary Fund's resources are a pittance compared to the financial exposure of the countries in most danger. And as a result of the industrialized world's government bailouts and bank guarantees, there won't be any more capital for emerging markets that are still flailing. Take, for example, a country as large and powerful as Germany: Deutsche Bank's assets represent 80 percent of the nation's GDP. In Switzerland, the assets of the bank UBS represent 450 percent of the country's GDP. The financial exposure of the British banks is similarly alarming: Barclays PLC's assets amount to more than 100 percent of the United Kingdom's GDP,

Bank Executives Receive Pay Deals Worth $70bn
Kauaiguy

Dear Wall Street: Hank Paulson effectively set your 2008 bonus to zero when he offered you government money you couldn’t refuse. Sure, you could go ahead and pay yourself $5 million, but that is spare change in your world and hardly worth five years of various Senate and House committee subpoenas.
