They will travel with rights activist Graca Machel, wife of former South African president Nelson Mandela, on November 22-23 on a mission to prevent the crisis from worsening, Annan said in a statement. Annan, Carter and Machel are members of the Elders: 12 world-respected statesmen with hands-on experience in conflict resolution. The group was formed last year by Machel and Mandela on his 89th birthday.

 • The Amish are relocated en masse to unelectrified penal colonies in Alaska because they refuse to pledge allegiance to anyone but God; they fail to accept that Obama is God. Unlike other deportations, this one saves the People's State money because the Amish are pacifists. Their formerly productive farmland is redistributed to ACORN staff and people George Soros likes (until he quits liking them; people do not think about what happens after that). Results similar to those in Zimbabwe fail to be reported in the state media. • The Amish are joined by those Rastas too stoned to fight back, although some Rastas merely remain under state suspicion after conceding that, as per Bob Marley, "the Almighty God is a living man" refers not to Haile Selassie but Barry Obama. • The Red Cross becomes the Red Circle (aka the Red 'O') and blood donations become mandatory. Those without recent donations are denied bread rations. . Mandated "volunteer" camps teach youth educational value of

Why we stand in line to vote - a historical photo essay
Lexica
by Lexica  11-4-2008    6
Over the last few days when looking at the photographs of people standing in line at early voting sites across the country, I've been reminded of so many pictures I've seen of election lines before - lines of voters from throughout the world, voters who have had to fight for the fundamental right to vote, voters for whom standing in line is perhaps the easiest part of everything they've had to do to bring about change. … So when I think about whether we'll have to wait in long lines on Tuesday, I'm not intimidated. I know that we won't be standing in those lines alone, we'll be accompanied by the history of millions of people a whole lot braver and tougher than we'll ever need to be to stay in line for a few hours.

Fight for Human Rights Continues in Burma
spirithiker
by spirithiker  11-1-2008    4
This monk has dedicated his life to attaining something we in America take for granted: Democracy and basic human rights. The U.S. claims to be a stalwart of human rights and yet allows human rights atrocities to continue in Burma, Zimbabwe, Tibet, etc. and even writes its laws to allow a U.S.-based corporation to profit from it. Chevron, based in California, has been making huge profits in Burma as part owner of a natural gas project. U.S. sanctions prevent most U.S. companies from working in Burma, but Chevron's investment there existed before the sanctions were imposed and continues under a grandfather clause. This man, and many others, is willing to die to gain freedom for his fellow countrymen. Chevron and the U.S. is willing to let him die at the hands of a tortuous dictatorial regime in order to make a profit. How is this any different than the terrorism the U.S. is creating in Iraq and Afghanistan?

Talks to conclude the setting up of the power sharing agreement between the ruling party and the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) party reach a critical phase on Monday when regional leaders visit Harare. The Southern African Development Community (SADC) troika on security will try to persuade Mr Mugabe and his rivals Mr Morgan Tsvangirai and Prof Arthur Mutambara to finalise the allocation of Cabinet posts. The setting up of the inclusive government has been in the works since September 15, when the three leaders signed an historic power sharing pact to end Zimbabwe’s decade old political and economic crisis. Parliament is expected to approve a constitution amendment giving force to the power sharing arrangement and disruption of its settings might further delay the process. Compared to other law makers in the region, Zimbabwean legislators are poorly paid, with their monthly salaries averaging less than $5 (Sh400). They also complain that they had been i
