El Senado aprobó anoche por 36 votos a favor y uno en contra, el Convenio sobre Pueblos Indígenas y Tribales de la Organización Internacional del Trabajo, OIT. Este reconocimiento que demoró 18 años en el Parlamento, está en condiciones de ser promulgado por la Presidenta de la República.

El Ministro Secretario General de la Presidencia, José Antonio Viera Gallo, destacó que el resultado de la votación refleja los cambios que una sociedad puede experimentar a través del diálogo. Subrayó que se trata de un significativo avance hacia un país más integrador con sus pueblos originarios.
El Convenio 169 de la OIT adoptado en la 76 reunión de 1989 es uno de los instrumentos jurídicos internacionales más actualizados sobre reconocimiento de derechos y protección de los pueblos indígenas. En América Latina ha sido ratificado por México, Colombia, Guatemala, Venezuela, Brasil, Ecuador, Perú, Bolivia, Argentina, Costra Rica, Paraguay y Honduras.
