Mobile fish farms could soon navigate the oceans

Swimming cages may soon shepherd farmed fish about the ocean, giving them a more natural environment and reducing their impact on natural ecosystems. The first tests of the wandering cages have just taken place in Puerto Rico.

Project Summary: The Offshore Aquaculture Engineering Center (OAEC) is a focused research effort of the MIT Sea Grant College Program. OAEC's mission is the solution of problems facing the aquaculture industries of Massachusetts and the nation. OAEC has a current focus on cages and other components of offshore grow-out systems necessary to farm fish and shellfish in the U.S. EEZ. All OAEC projects involve collaborators from industry.
