Évente százezer látogató keresi fel a Kis-Balatont, több mint tízezren vesznek részt buszos csoportvezetéseken a töltéseken. A turisták bejuthatnak néhány fokozottan védett területre is, de az őshonos növény- és állatvilág védelmében több szabályt is be kell tartaniuk.
A Kis-Balaton európai uniós pályázati tervei már az őshonos növény- és állatvilágnak kedvező módon, a természetvédelmi kéréseket és elvárásokat figyelembe véve készültek el. Összesen 7,5 milliárd forint forrást biztosítanak az élőhelyek megőrzésére, a telepítési rend, a halászat módjának megváltoztatása pedig lehetőséget nyújt a tájidegen fajok eltávolítására.
A tervek szerint 90 centiméterrel csökkentik a vízszintet, így meg lehet őrizni a terület mozaikosságát, nagyobb lesz az időszakosan szárazon álló terület.
A töltés megszaggatásával a víz ki tud lépni a legelőterületre, a nádas meg tud erősödni.
