Islam sebagai agama terbuka dinyatakan Roger Garaudy, seorang failasuf Prancis yang telah menyatakan diri masuk Islam, dan mulai banyak memberi sumbangan pikiran. Ia merasa gusar sekali dengan munculnya fundamentalisme (Prancis: intégrisme; Arab: ushûliyah) dalam Islam, bersamaan dengan munculnya fundamentalisme agama-agama lain di seluruh dunia, yang ia nilai sangat merugikan kemanusiaan pada umumnya. Bagi kaum Muslim, untuk mengatasi fundamentalisme itu dan memberi sumbangan kepada kemanusiaan masa mendatang, perlu mereka berusaha kembali menemukan seluruh dimensi Islam yang dahulu pernah membuatnya demikian agung dan jaya.
