El pueblo huichol, de nuevo amenazado

Hace un año, la comunidad indígena Huichola de Santa Catarina Cuexcomatitlán (Tuapurie, municipio de Mezquitic) se hallaba inmersa en un proceso de intensa movilización para defender su territorio frente a la amenaza de la carretera Bolaños- Huejuquilla el Alto. Su construcción había comenzado sin contar con los permisos necesarios, violando normas de la legislación mexicana e internacional, en particular, el Convenio 169 de la OIT (ver DIAGONAL nº 75). Gracias a una asamblea permanente de varias semanas en la zona de las obras en la que tomaron parte más de 900 indígenas y a las gestiones de diferentes ONG, los huicholes lograron suspender la ejecución de la vía, mediante la prohibición de distintos tramos de la carretera.

Esto obligó a las empresas constructoras contratadas por el Gobierno de Jalisco a frenar los trabajos, evitando un enorme daño en esta zona de alto valor ecológico de la Sierra Madre occidental.
