Ancic/Melzer Surprise Bhupathi/Paes in Dutch Final
Unseeded Mario Ancic and Jurgen Melzer (pictured) surprised No. 2 seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes 7-6(5), 6-3, to capture the Ordina Open title in 's-Hertogenbosch on Saturday.
The Croat/Austrian tandem, playing together for the second straight week after a second round showing at Queen's, didn't drop a set in the tournament. They also defeated No. 3 seeds Frantisek Cermak and Jordan Kerr in the first round.
After an exchange of breaks in the first set, Ancic and Melzer jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the tie-break and won 7-5. Both teams won 39 points in the closely-contested 42-minute set. In the second set, Ancic and Melzer broke to take a 3-1 lead and went on to hold their next three service games to secure the title.
Ancic captured his fifth career ATP doubles title in as many finals, the first since Mumbai in 2006, while Melzer earned his fourth title in 15th final. His last title came in Newport two years ago.
