POPSUnited Nations Reform: Fact or Fiction? The United Nations promised international cooperation on eliminating the major threats to peace and security and the most serious impediments to the protection of human rights and human dignity. Sixty years after the UN officially came into existence, 24 October 1945, the trail is one of broken promises. While important successes have marked some of its paths, the international machine has been hijacked and manipulated to subvert the very causes it was intended to promote. A number of factors have forced UN reform to move much higher up on the global agenda than ever before: the exposure of the billion-dollar UN-run Oil-for-food scam, peacekeeper-rapists, and paralysis in the face of genocide in Sudan. However, in an environment where there is little, if any, consensus on the most critical issues of our time, the real game is one of finger-pointing. Undoubtedly, the "blame America first" will continue. http://www.eyeontheun.org/un-reform.asp

POPSPower and the relation between these two aricles More power to the leader of the US or could we do better without that institution? Parliamentary democracy seems to be more democratic when one looks at this administration. Way too much abuse of power. GITMO, surveillance, the list just goes on and on

Otherwise how will our taxpayer-funded hate police manage to keep their cozy sinecure? Happily, beginning on July 1, under Ontario's "human rights" reforms, Commissar Hall will have far greater powers to initiate prosecutions. Under the new proposals, " 'hate incident' means any act or omission, whether criminal or not, that expresses bias, prejudice, bigotry or contempt toward a vulnerable or disadvantaged community or its members." "Act or omission"? Of course. The act of not acting in an insufficiently non-hateful way can itself be hateful. Whether or not the incident is a non-incident is incidental. I quote from "Concepts Of Race And Racism And Implications For OHRC Policy" as published on the OHRC website: "The denial of racism used by so many whites in positions of authority ranging from the supervisor in a work place to the chief of Police and ministers of government must be understood for what it is: an example of White hegemonic power over those considered 'other.' POPSIreland's Favourite GAY. Next President? No, we're not running out of great candidates to continue the great female line of Irish Presidents, but David isn't getting any younger so maybe the females would give him a turn.

POPS Clinton unveils mandatory health care insurance plan Health care is a basic human right. It is sad the US, the so called great human rights country, is the last to still not provide this basic human right to everyone. Being that the US is the wealthiest nation on the planet, it makes it all the more inexcusable.

POPSNationalist Twitching? Or Deeper Problems in Border Development Secmol was founded to promote Ladakhi culture (a group similar to the tibetans who live in present day Jammu and Kashmir state of India) and education for peoples who live in very remote areas. Their missions have included solar power projects and education, basic education for impoverished locals, and putting together excellent work on keeping Ladakh Ladakhi inspite of excessive tourism and national marginalization. Often forgotten in discussion of the problems in Kashmir, they have faced numerous struggles to get equal rights in India. This issue in particular raises some serious questions as to what kind of India the government is really trying to create. Anyone with opinions or thoughts from anywhere is welcome to comment. I'd also be curious to hear what other Indian nationals feel about this often neglected corner of India.

POPSBush admin: Undermining Iranian democracy Similar warnings were delivered to U.S. officials by others, including Trita Parsi, president of the National Iranian American Council. "We had talks with the State Department and with lawmakers," Parsi told TIME. "We pointed out the dangers. Our advice was not taken into consideration. Things have turned out worse than we expected." Parsi says that, in the past, individual democracy activists have been arrested without a pretext, but that the Bush Administration's program gave the regime an opportunity to go after as many as 10,000 non-government organizations and their memberships. "There is tremendous self-censorship going on," Parsi says. "They know that the money has made them targets." Via Garance Franke-Ruta

POPSYahoo and freedom of speech in China An interesting story, which can lead to unpleasant outcome to Yahoo, and later to companies like Google. Indeed whoever work in China needs to comply with Chinese law, but Yahoo/Google and such are not just regular companies, they all know too much about us, and are successful because we give the information willingly, it gives them also responsibility, morally if not legal. Also "Internet rights" for users should be global.

POPSIran to Prosecute Women's Rights Activists Human Rights Watch (HRW) is demanding that the women be dismissed due to lack of legal grounds for their arrest. The freedom to peaceful assembly is guaranteed not only by the Iranian constitution, but also by Article 20 of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 21 of the UN International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which Iran is a party.

POPSCongress Subpoenas Rumsfeld "When the committee requests information from executive branch departments and agencies, we try to be reasonable and accommodate their legitimate concerns about the volume and the sensitivity of what we're asking for," he said. "But if the Department won't even return a call, after three months, and begin that dialogue, we really have no choice but to subpoena the material and compel their attention to our request."

POPSTargeting justice Oh my! As if New Labour haven't done enough to the Criminal Justice System, he's now talking about doing more. Well, either that or it's just an 'announcement' to our rather draconian new Home Secetary.
