The virtual map says it all. Now it means the approach to the solution of the pollution problem needs to be tackled in different ways in each hemisphere. Atmospheric pollution is only one problem. More investigation needs to be done into the nature of oceanic pollution. it did make me wonder of the Nuclear Fusion experiments on Mururoa (Aopuni) and Bikini atolls in French Polynesia last Century. The first nuclear test was conducted on July 2, 1966, code named Aldebaran. France abandoned nuclear testing in the atmosphere in 1974 and moved testing underground in the midst of intense world pressure. A total of 147 underground nuclear tests were conducted at Mururoa and Fangataufa. This practice created much controversy as cracking of the atolls was discovered, A 1979 test conducted at half the usual depth caused a large submarine landslide on the southwest rim of the atoll. Just somehow seemed relevant

In Oakland, the 4th busiest container port in the US, where air quality issues are an ongoing problem , pollution related to the port has been shown to be linked to serious health and environmental problems in West Oakland, including shorter life expectancies (10 years lower for children growing up in West Oakland) and high rates of asthma, chronic lung disease, and heart disease.

On Climate, EPA Punts
Wisco
by Wisco  7-11-2008
So, rather than comply with the SCOTUS ruling, the Bush administration effectively shuts down enforcement of the Clean Air Act. And, in doing so, dismisses the EPA's own study. Pigheaded, corrupt, and stupid to the very last day of his presidency. That'll be how history remembers George W. Bush

CO2, A Breath Of Fresh Air
merrie
by merrie  7-10-2008
CO2 is being labelled a pollutant but is it? Climate alarmism depends on catastrophe. In itself CO2 is a life giver. As a combination of Oxygen and Carbon it represents life itself. We are built from carbon as is every other life form and again like every other life form Oxygen is the fuel we must have to survive. How can the very elements that build us and fuel us and every other life form be a pollutant? The main case being made against our fossil fuel habit is that we are releasing carbon stored over millennia into the atmosphere in a relatively short period of time. Is that necessarily a bad thing in itself? We certainly need to conserve natural resources but the fact is that after several billion years of life on Earth the Earth’s crust is simply awash with carbon in one form or another. However, the demonisation of fossil fuels and CO2 before the globe has removed poverty and allowed less developed nations to share in worldwide prosperity is an obscenity.

So, here we are with bad science ready to support bad policy decisions that will lead to bad economic times ahead, and no presidential candidate who is willing to ask the hard questions. While we hate to be pandered to by politicians, in this case I can only hope that they really are pandering — that this is hot air and not prospective policy.

All of this assumes that mankind is the primary cause of global warming anyway. You might be surprised to learn that there has never been a single scientific paper published which has ruled out natural climate variability for most of our current global-mean warmth. Not one. As the mass hysteria calling for an end to carbon dioxide production has accelerated, ethanol has arisen as the new messiah of radical environmentalism, promising to assuage our guilty enviro-consciences when we choose to starve more of the world’s poor.

Technical fix for Toxic Stockpile?
pokkets
by pokkets  2-7-2008    1
I read the bottom line "More expensive than incineration" and it was clear the Orica would find faults in the technology. It's a bit late. The chemical in rubble? NO it leeches into the environment. Orica are notorious for their lack of concern regarding pollution. they once just let these wastes out with the sewerage, but there was never a word said. It is only through research, and environmental testing which proved them so callous.Persistent Organic Pollutants, are so named because they are so unnatural there is no mechanism in the natural environment to break them down. Two of the most classic chemicals which are a prime source of the P.O.P. Dioxin, are DDT, a pesticide, and Agent Orange A Herbicide. There is the acronym NIMBY Not in My Back Yard. what is ironic to say the least, is the way the wastes are disposed, they are in EVRYONES Back Yard in their bloodstream, in their food, in their water, They tend to concentrate towards the top of food chains Sharks Whales and People

World's coal dependency hits environment.
pokkets
by pokkets  11-4-2007
Where do the products go, that the energy from coal in China is used to make? When China burns coal the damage is obvious, and it contributes to the pollution and global warming effects. All over the world including the U.S. The Chinese are using the U.S. as a Role Model. and Chinese coal use cannot deny the use of coal in other parts of the world including the U.S., particularly the per capita use. The Pollution? All toxins that are released into the environment, are being evenly distributed around the world. While there are 'hot spots' as time passes tests in the most unexpected places in the world are giving the same positive results. Chinese Acid rain and heavy metal pollution no doubt falls on other countries. as do the same pollutants in the U.S.

Pulp mill effluent may not flush away
pokkets
by pokkets  10-5-2007    2
The defense for the mill which turns old growth into woodchips, and the Primary concern is supposed to be the jobs of a few hundred workers. Disperse Dioxin ? Share the misery. It never goes goes away, and known as a Persistent Organic Pollutant. It can not be broken down by any natural process. It is alien to the Environment. With dispersal, The first problem is they have absolutely no idea how the current is working, so they intend to throw it in and hope it goes away. Remember Homer in the Simpsons movie ? This is the same thing but it isn't a movie, but it is still for the sake of free donuts. There is a lot of chemical production, and use of organic pesticides like DDT, which release dioxin and thousands of other toxic substances which are just flushed down the river to 'disperse' India is an example, but it is a consequence of global industrialization, and solutions that are short term but create long term effects. Any Ocean is tests for toxins have been surprising and ominous.
