WV charlatan to be examined by US Supreme Court
masbury
by masbury  11-16-2008    1
Don Blankenship, CEO of WV's Massey Energy Co., which has a criminal record of over 5,000 counts, has been fined for employee deaths and waterway pollution, DB was seen in Monte Carlo with a WV Supreme Ct judge while appealing a $50 million judgment to the court (judge later recused himself), has another judge on the court who got $3 million from DB to get elected, who refused to recuse himself from the appeal, and the $50 M fine was shot down 3-2. Ah, but now the US Supreme Court has decided it will look over an appeal to the case challenging the judge's presence. Do you suppose justice might prevail in WV? DB has spent over $6 million to elect Republicans in WV.

California economy loses $28 billion yearly to health effects of pollution
Kelika
by Kelika  11-13-2008
Considered the most lethal form of air pollution, microscopic particulates expelled from tailpipes, factory smoke stacks, diesel trucks and equipment can penetrate through the lungs and enter the bloodstream. Exposure to these fine particles has been linked to severe asthma, cancer and premature deaths from heart and lung disease. "In the South Coast basin, an average 64% of the population is exposed to health-endangering annual averages of particulates," Hall said, "and in the most populated county -- Los Angeles -- it is 75%. "In most years, the South Coast and San Joaquin basins vie with the Houston, Texas, area for the worst air pollution trophy, but this year we took it back," she said. "That's not a prize you want to be handed. Essentially, imported T-shirts and tennis shoes are being hauled to Omaha and the big-rig diesel pollution stays here."

CA Air Pollution Deadlier Than Traffic Accidents
Wisco
by Wisco  11-13-2008
The study found that the California Highway Patrol recorded 2,521 vehicular deaths in the San Joaquin Valley and South Coast Air Basin in 2006, compared to 3,812 deaths attributed to respiratory illness caused by particulate pollution. "It may be tempting to think California can't afford to clean up, but in fact dirty air is like a $28 billion lead balloon on our economy," Hall said.

Looking for Carbon in Renewable Energy
odiedog

Renewable Energy Credits are designed to spur the development of renewable energy by selling the rights to its environmental benefits. Carbon credits often aim to do much the same thing. Can the two get along? The Ecosystem Marketplace examines the role of RECs in a carbon economy.

Baby Pygmy Hippo Brings New Hope For The Endangered Species
merrie
by merrie  11-9-2008    4
â€˜We would obviously have wanted her mother to raise her, but she definitely would have died if we didn't step in.’ She weighs 3.8 kg or 8.3 lbs. (the weight of a gallon of water) Pygmy hippos are reclusive and nocturnal. Along with their much larger cousins, the common hippopotamuses, they are the only hippo species in the world. Pygmy hippos are semi-aquatic and need to live near water to keep their skin moisturised and their body cool. They sometimes even mate and give birth in water. Pygmy hippos are plant-eating mammals, feeding on ferns, broad-leaved plants, grasses and fruits they find in the forest.

DON'T CALL IT A DUMP!!!
LoPhatt
by LoPhatt  11-4-2008
The biggest working sanitary landfill in the United States, located right outside Los Angeles, is so much more than a garbage dump: it is an environmentally-safe recycling haven where even unrecyclable waste can be turned into clean bioenergy fuels and lots and lots of power (it is one of the largest power generators in the state of California). Landfills are the nation's second largest source of manmade methane pollution. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas and a contributor to the smog air pollution. While landfills such as Puente Hills in Los Angeles are realizing the economic benefits of capturing and utilizing the energy from methane, there are still hundreds of landfills across the nation missing this critical opportunity.

Burying the lead
sillysam
by sillysam  11-4-2008    1
And yet they had a "****-me" story. But they chose to bury not only the lead but the entire dog: "Obama's Straight-Ahead Style". Why not just call it "Nothing To See Here, Folks. Another Direct-To-Birdcage Production"? There is no explanation for the Chronicle's action if they're in the newspaper business (ie, in attracting readers, selling copies, etc.). But it makes perfect sense if they're in the ideological PR business in hopes of electing politicians sufficiently grateful to include them in the next $700 billion bailout.
