My Beautiful Blue Indiana!
gingembre
by gingembre  11-5-2008    1
I am so pleased that the majority of voters in my home state of Indiana chose Obama over McCain! It has been an exciting election for us Hoosiers, who normally get little attention due to the assumption that Indiana is a dyed-in-the-wool red state. Well, not any more! Woo hoo! I was one of the Hoosiers who cast an absentee ballot this year. :)

My Obama Yard Sign Is Proof of Citizenship ~ Mark Steyn
merrie
by merrie  10-31-2008    4
By the way, the argument that giving money to Obama is ipso facto proof of citizenship also clears up any question marks over those donations by "A Hitler" and "S Hussein". Congratulations! Oh, and if you want to know why The Boston Globe's parent company ( The New York Times) has been downgraded by Moody's to junk status, ask yourself why this story is in a foreign newspaper three thousand miles away rather than the local rag. Congratulations to my old comrade from the Conrad Black trial, James Bone, for doing the job Americans (or at least their media) won't do.

Saving America From Obama
merrie
by merrie  10-30-2008    1
of the US Communist Party, unrepentant former Weather Underground terrorists, and a minister who preaches anti-Americanism. The head of the Black Muslim movement, Louis Farrakhan, recently declared him to be the “messiah.” We have learned too of his association with the Association of Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) initially as a “community organizer”, but ACORN is now revealed to have profited greatly from the Democrat programs that required banks and mortgage firms to make loans to the poor. It has led to the present financial crisis. ACORN is being investigated for massive voter registration abuses. Obama was closely associated with Antoine “Tony” Rezko, a convicted Chicago real estate developer who was a major political contributor. One would think that what we already know about Obama would be sufficient to dismiss him as a serious candidate for the presidency of the United States, but I am just as concerned about what we don’t know.

Obama and Ayers: A Radical Pentagon Bomber NYTimes
merrie
by merrie  10-4-2008
Since earning a doctorate in education at Columbia in 1987, Mr. Ayers has been a professor of education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, the author or editor of 15 books, and an advocate of school reform. Steve Chapman, a columnist for The Chicago Tribune, defended Mr. Obama’s relationship with the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., his longtime pastor, whose black liberation theology and “God damn America” sermon became notorious last spring. But he denounced Mr. Obama for associating with Mr. Ayers, whom he said the University of Illinois should never have hired. “I don’t think there’s a statute of limitations on terrorist bombings,” Mr. Chapman said in an interview. The Schools Project The Ayers-Obama connection first came to public attention last spring, when both Senator Hilary Rodham Clinton, Mr. Obama’s Democratic primary rival, and Mr. McCain brought it up. the archives of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge at the University of Illinois were opened to rese

The 55 trillion dollar question
deb2012
by deb2012  9-30-2008    1
Will credit default swaps be the next disaster? When you put $10 on black 22, you're pretty sure the casino will pay off if you win. The CDS market offers no such assurance. One reason the market grew so quickly was that hedge funds poured in, sensing easy money. And not just big, well-established hedge funds but a lot of upstarts. So in some cases, giant financial institutions were counting on collecting money from institutions only slightly more solvent than your average minimart. The danger, of course, is that if a hedge fund suddenly has to pay off on a lot of CDS, it will simply go out of business.

Barbies For War!
debbyski
by debbyski  9-17-2008    4
Anne Heche’s mother, Nancy, talked about her distress when her daughter told her she was involved with Ellen. Jeff Johnston told me he had “a struggle” with homosexuality “for a season,” but is now “happily married with three boys.” (Books for sale there included “Mommy, Why Are They Holding Hands?” and “You Don’t Have to Be Gay.”) “We are one Supreme Court justice away from overturning Roe v. Wade,” he excitedly told me. R. D. Levno, a retired school principal, flew in from Fairbanks. “She’s a child, inexperienced and simplistic,” she said of Sarah. “It’s taking us back to junior high school. She’s one of the popular girls, but one of the mean girls. She is seductive, but she is invented.” I KNEW she reminded me of a "Heather"

Racial In-sensitivity or Over-sensitivity?
cmstratton
by cmstratton  7-9-2008
This is an example of how overly-sensitive and conservative American society has become. It seems like people are always on the look-out for what could possibly be interpreted as a potential negative connotation against a particular race, color, religion, etc. Could you interpret this character's features as mocking black people - sure. But it's a cartoon character - they are often over-exaggerated to make them more engaging. The story of the cartoon means no disrespect, but because some racial leaders interpret it as offensive, it's being removed from stores. I think we go overboard more often than not in these types of situations. Is the cartoon saying black people are bad - no. Does the character exaggerate some physical characteristics black people tend to have - it looks like it. But why is that offensive?

The Legacy of Charles Fort
revenantdm
by revenantdm  6-19-2008
Many people over the space of 5000 yrs of human civilization have claimed to be prophets, messiahs, holy men or the Illuminated as compared to the rest of us "mere" normals. Some have claimed to be masters of the Black Arts (Aleister Crowley, et al) and some have claimed to be immortal or possessing long lives (Comte de Saint-Germain, Cagliostro, John Dee) or incredible psychic awareness (Edgar Cayce, Uri Gellar, Madame Blavatsky) but as far as I know only one man made his life out of collecting facts that were witnessed by many and researched diligently by him that still astound us. You have seen the kinds of things I am talking about on the X-Files or read of it in the Tabloids, but this man never took it as more than a wonderful reach that man's scientific knowledge was far from complete. Charles Fort only collected curiosities as I do. He was my inspiration. This is his legacy.

From “Green Conservatism” To Black Gold
merrie
by merrie  6-17-2008    1
In his book, sounding like Al Gore, Gingrich maintains that “global climate change” is one of several “worldwide challenges.” Unlike Gore, he seems to reject any involvement by “international bureaucrats” in such a scheme. So-called “green conservatism” also surfaced in former Bush speechwriter David Frum’s book. Incredibly, however, Frum advocates a carbon tax as a winning conservative idea. This kind of doubletalk helps explain why the Republican Party is in disarray. Rather than advocate the production of more energy of all kinds, they have an incoherent message that looks insincere and hypocritical because they want to appear to be as “green” as the Democrats, It’s good that Gingrich now seems to have jettisoned this approach. “Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less” He should go further and recall copies of his books. We need an American Vaclav Klaus to lead the way back to freedom.

Why Ron Paul Won The Election
sahara
by sahara  6-12-2008    2
The words and arguments of Ron Paul are still resonating. They still hang over this election. They are haunting and troubling. They are producing blogs and papers and books. And when those heady days happen a small but hearty band of pioneers, who first had the nerve to join him and start shouting from the street, “They aren’t wearing any clothes,” will be able to say that they could see what the country missed. They were there when history was made. John McCain and his poorly chosen words, of staying in Iraq a hundred years, have almost guaranteed that he will be the answer to the trivia question, who was the Republican candidate who lost to the ticket that claimed the first woman and black for the presidency? Another question may very well be, “What other candidate ran that year and launched the movement that has dominated national politics for the last generation?” And the answer will be Ron Paul.
