POPSDo Dolphins Have a Sense of the Future? I had a wonderful experience with a mated pair of Hawaiian Bottlenose dolphins...When I was on a longliner Tuna boat we would stop for lunch at the end of the flagline and one day a male dolphin stuck his nose on the gunwale edge and squawked loudly and then swam a sort distance back down the line...then back and repeated the message...we ran down the line until we found his mate, who had tried to steal our bait (Look, honey, free breakfast!) and got hooked on her lip! rather than tear her lip she sent Hubby to us for the rescue! I swear she sat her cute little nose on the gunwale and patiently waited while I removed the hook...thanked us with a flip and some clicxkin, squeeling and swam off! Amazing! This was my first falling in love with Dolphins and Whales came later.

POPSWhen Obama Met Bush, Posturing Caught
Flashing back in case you missed it. Obama's actions were very arrogant (even toward Bush) and presumptuous, which says a whole lot about the President elect. Confidence and arrogance are not the same thing. It is natural for one to defend their legitimate authority (Bush) and to treat the presumptuous with hints and reminders if they behave forwardly, especially when the "show is on" (cameras rolling). The power struggle was caught by the lens. Some are smiling more than others. Barack, who claims to be a Christian, shows bad manners here, for Jesus plainly taught about the humble patiently waiting to be "called up" toward the head of the table. Obama is not yet officially President, nor have the White House. This foreshadows a lot! Beware of the humble appearing leader as soon as he assumes power. Finish the proverb, "Absolute power corrupts...." No one in this article mentioned Michelle's "Diva red"--shoulders to toes--while Barack and Bush dressed almost identical.

POPSObama Wins: Bangkok Post - Bangkok, Thailand A full 62 per cent of voters ranked the economy as the key issue of this election, compared to 10 per cent invoking the war in Iraq and 9 per cent rating terrorism or health care highest. Millions already voted in recent weeks in early or absentee voting allowed in 31 states, including key battlegrounds Florida, North Carolina, Colorado and Nevada. Voters waited patiently in serpentine queues early Tuesday to cast ballots. Many had started lining up before dawn, and some braved pouring rain to cast their ballots. It was a bittersweet end to the 21-month campaign for Obama, whose grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, 86, passed away overnight Sunday after a battle with cancer, the Illinois senator revealed Monday.

POPSIraqi War Veteran - Gun in One Hand and a Flag in the Other Police waited patiently while the gunman hung the American flag and an Obama Poster on the Freeway overpass. Then he went to jail. He won't get to vote in jail. Media coverage was nearly absent. Would it have gotten more coverage if he put up a McCain poster? See the best coverage at www.edhat.com - Santa Barbara Internet citizen news.

POPSDinosaurs Diversified Over Time, not Suddenly During this epoch of riotous biodiversity, flowering plants, social insects, butterflies, modern groups of lizards, mammals, and possibly birds, too, all emerged. Some experts have suggested that dinosaurs were also part of the show, as so many weird fossils, such as duckbilled hadrosaurs, horned ceratopsians, pachycephalosaurs and other wonders, date from this time. But a new study, published on Wednesday in a British journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, says that dinosaurs were less than a sideshow in the DNA spectacular. Researchers led by Graeme Lloyd of the University of Bristol, western England, devised a "supertree" of dinosaur evolution, patiently analyzing how more than 450 species -- about 70 percent of the known finds -- developed.

POPSGen. David Petraeus beats megastar Angeline Jolie.... People in the *real* world know who is truly important. No disrespect to Ms. Jolie, but her influence is minimal when it comes to life & death issues. This is also true of Crews, Baldwin, Franken, Hayden, etc..... Celebrities are useless when it comes to getting things accomplished. Nice article that gives credit where credit is due.

POPSEndurance Endurance It has been raining heavily. But the rain has stopped, and water streaks on the glass starting to dry up form into various shapes of raindrops. Someone is watching the room through the window and notices an orchid gracefully blooming in a pot. The orchid is a special flower which unlike other plants blossoms without wilting for many many weeks. Here it represents hope and endurance. The orchid feels the watcher’s burden and suffering. That is why out of thin air in the dry room the rain starts dripping inside on the table creating a symbol of a different dimension – the dimension of empathy. The raindrops on the window represent pain and tears. When we are lonely or desperate we need someone to show their compassion. We need an embrace, a kind word, or an understanding glance. Even during the worst of times we should remember that there is always tomorrow, there is always someone who cares, and the rain will stop soon… We need to persevere and patiently wait for

POPSWould You Feed a Customer at a Hunger Cafe? This story is about cafes in India that serve the hungry for very low prices. The catch is that they have to sit outside and wait for someone to donate money for their meal. I've clipped it because I thought it was a very interesting window into Indian culture. And if travel is about anything, it's about exposure to culture. I also think that when we travel it's important to be aware of different cultural practices when it comes to things like charity. Do you think you'd be more prone to donate money to people sitting in front of a hunger cafe while traveling as opposed to someone who was walking the streets asking for money?

POPSA Writer's Damaged Sword Arm in New Orleans
An excellent story by an excellent writer--she goes on (but read all): Every other house is either empty or boarded up, and ongoing reconstruction seems either non-existent or delayed. Potholes and uneven surfaces threaten to peel off her car’s exhaust system. A few residents are valiantly planting spring flowers in muddy yards, and the riot of color draws the eyes away from the wrecked buildings. Every block or so, there are one or two homes that are miraculously restored, or appear to have escaped the wrath of Poseidon. This street is one of those that had boats going door to door in the aftermath of Katrina’s flood, and the flat the writer is renting has no furniture because the owner lost almost everything to the filthy water. The furniture that is left has been destroyed by a contractor who neglected to cover it while he was working. The writer feels narcissistic, wanting to complain about having nothing except a musty mattress on the floor. There are tens of thousands here

POPSIllustrated Nursery Rhymes Mary had a little lamb, Its fleece was white as snow; And everywhere that Mary went, The lamb was sure to go. He followed her to school one day; That was against the rule; It made the children laugh and play; To see a lamb at school. And so the teacher turned it out, But still it lingered near, And waited patiently about Till Mary did appear. "Why does the lamb love Mary so?" The eager children cry; "Why, Mary loves the lamb, you know," The teacher did reply.

POPSGetting Poverty Wrong While they insist that strengthening labor unions or protecting homeowners from foreclosures will alleviate the hardships of the poor, the latest data from the U.S. Bureau of the Census remind us that the breakdown of the traditional two-parent, married family is a far greater contributor to poverty in America than many of the supposed shortcomings of our economy. It’s hard to imagine that America will make much more headway on reducing persistent poverty until it halts this long-term trend. The Census Bureau’s study on the living arrangements of American children appeared in mid-February. The data show that the number of children now living in two-parent families has dipped just below the 70 percent mark for the first time since the Census began collecting data on family formation nearly 130 years ago. Researchers estimate that the entire rise in poverty in America since the late 1970s can be attributed to the decline of families headed by two married parents.

POPSThe Myth Of The Victimless Crime "Whether the woman is in a hotel room or on a side street in someone’s car, whether she’s trafficked from New York to Washington or from Mexico to Florida or from the city to the suburbs, the experience of being prostituted causes her immense psychological and physical harm. And it all starts with the buyer."

POPSGood news for the lazy amongst us >Using some altogether trickier maths, the plucky number-smiths showed that, even if you start making the bus routes more complicated and adding more and more bus stops, the conclusions stay the same. Whether this theory works in London, where bendy buses are frequently held up by long traffic queues and even longer road works, is another matter. However, if you do decide to walk, do so immediately and briskly and don’t look back!<

POPSWhere was this when I was on Deployment?! Holy smokes would this have been useful! We went to so many ports that just did not have any WiFi access AT ALL! I think this would have been a God send! (Provided there were cellphone networks). Anyways, I will wait for this to become mainstream before I drop the almost $200 on it.
