Sloshing Inside Earth Changes Protective Magnetic Field
durvishkumar
by durvishkumar   8-18-2008
The Earth's magnetic field extends about 36,000 miles (58,000 km) into space, generated from the spinning effect of the electrically-conductive core that acts something like a giant electromagnet. The field creates a tear-drop shaped bubble that has constantly shielded life on Earth against much of the high-energy radiation flowing from the sun. The last major change in the field took place some 780,000 years ago during a magnetic reversal, although such reversals seem to occur more often on average. A flip in the north and south poles typically involves a weakening in the magnetic field, followed by a period of rapid recovery and reorganization of opposite polarity. Some studies in recent years have suggested the next reversal might be imminent, but the jury is out on that question.

Physicists Seek Answers to Quantum Correlations
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  8-17-2008    1
The physicists ruled out several possible classical explanations for the instantaneous communication. For one thing, they showed that the photons did not share information before leaving Geneva, and so they didn´t travel knowing about each other´s properties. In another test, the scientists showed that no communication could have occurred through a different reference frame, as might happen because of the photons´ high speeds. According to Einstein´s theory of relativity, observers moving at high speeds can get different measurements of the same event because they have different reference frames. But, by performing tests over a complete rotation of the Earth, the researchers ruled out this possibility. "We think space and time are important because that´s the kind of monkeys we are,"

Tunguska: 100 years of wondering

30th Jun was the hundredth anniversary of the Tunguska explosion. They think the answer might lie at the bottom of Lake Chelo. The rule of thumb is that a 100 metre asteroid equals a 100 mTon hydrogen bomb.

Trans-Atlantic MagLev -- A Magnetically Levitated Vacuum Tube Train
rj3sp
by rj3sp  7-4-2008
A Maglev train floats about 10mm above the guidway on a magnetic field and is propelled by the guidway itself rather than an onboard engine by changing magnetic fields. An exotic proposal based upon this principle is the Trans Atlantic vactrain: a Maglev train in a long near-vacuum tube with speeds that allow less than one hour travel times between New York and London.

The Skycar Will Be Operated Completely By Computer And Guided By GPS
merrie
by merrie  5-4-2008    2
The four-seat Skycar is powered by eight rotary engines that are housed inside four metal housings, called nacelles, on the side of the vehicle. There are two engines in each nacelle so that if one of the engines in one of the nacelle fails, the other engine can sustain flight. The engines lift the craft with 720 horsepower, and then thrust the craft forward. The Wankel engine replaces pistons of a conventional engine with a single triangular rotor spinning inside an oval-shaped chamber, which creates compression and expansion as the rotor turns. There are three combustion chambers in the Wankel, with a crankshaft between them. To make the Skycar safe and available to the general public, it will be completely controlled by computers using Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites, which Moller calls a fly-by-wire system. In case of an accident, the vehicle will release a parachute and airbags, internally and externally, to cushion the impact of the crash.
