POPSLearning analytics - "hot, hot, hot" As traditional educational institutions begin to disintegrate because of lack of funding, increased fees, ineffective teaching and lack of jobs for graduates, people will need a new generation of open learning tools and techniques are being developed. Amazon has proved that predictive analytics can vastly enrich reading lists by measuring likemindedness in customer purchases. However, the boundary between likeminds (common values?) and group think (common prejudices?) is as thin as it is vitally important. One thing which can be said for predictive analytics and content analysis (our profession) is that they both remove the personal guru / leader factor from the equation, along with notions, such as influencers and followers. What remains should be more informed decisions. (Jan)

POPSFutures Thinking: Mapping the Possibilities (Part 1) Amplify is currently a "scanning the world" function. Classification and structured tagging would provide the "data points" for information flow analysis which is the next step in adding value to a clip base. Then it becomes possible to derive trends and scenarios from Amplifiers' metadata. If only we could get Eric to see this, Amplify could become a 'next generation' self-signifying information resource of immense financial value to be split among the Amplifiers after Amplify takes it cut.

POPSSimplicity Is Killing Us Western culture tells stories which resolve everything in two simple dimensions of right / wrong, winning / losing. In other cultures, stories are framed to raise open questions predicated on the mystery, complexity and uncertainty of the natural world. And if stories arise from a process of monitoring self signifying intelligence, only indicators, trends, comparisons, inferences and comments can be made. There can be no rights or wrongs, but there are implications and consequences. Thanks Justine and WildCat. (See also - www.openintelligence.wordpress.com for more on self signifying intelligence.)

POPSIs Twitter a Mental Vacuum? These findings are the first I have seen in the Twitter analytics field which are the result of real content analysis, rather than random word counts. Note the concept of the sample (and its size); and the meaning driven, rather than data driven categorisations of the results. This type of meaning analysis is currently done far better by humans, than computers. Content analysis is what we do at Open Intelligence (see www.openintelligence.wordpress.com). Amplify content is of far greater value than Twitter data. Content analysis is intellectually labour intensive, and is therefore rather expensive. However, a process of self analysis by Amplifiers would be free and the results would be far more valuable than the rubbish which comes out of Twitter.

POPSTop 10 Small Business Trends for 2010 In the 80s rescession, Charles Handy came of up the term "portfolio person" to describe how people would make a living. I have been advocating homeworking and the importance of the local economy (and local currencies) since then, too. As a content analyst, I have been advocating "analytical tool" for (self signifying) "data driven decisions" for even longer. And we are still a small business. But it looks like the opportunity to become a big business might be presenting itself. The data seems to be pointing that way (along with our order book).

POPSTwitter Advertising with Tweetmeme A retweet is evidently worth more than a tweet because it implies a recommendation. The problem with monetising tweets and retweets is the massive potential for abuse on such an open market. (Think of buying rings in auctions on a massive scale.) IMHO, there is no way of avoiding this problem in an open market. I wonder whether there is such a thing as intelligent regulation?

POPSThe Evolution of A New Trust Economy I have re-clipped Wildcat's finding, so I can tag it into our '1-self signifying' collection See tags on www.openintelligence.amplify.com. (I do so wish that Categories and Tags would be on Amplify's Newsfeed page.) I also emphasised the sCRM angle, as I wote a report a few years ago, called Beyond CRM which was about a new "buyer centric" economy.

POPSTwitter and the Global Brain In fact, judging by Twitter's Trending Topics, the re-tweeting process does not point to either good, or important content. Of course, it may not be right to assume that a global brain will be smarter, and real significance will be lost in the tsunami of celebrity drivel.

POPSInternet warfare team unveiled #Twitter #socialmedia This kind of knowledge warfare was pioneered by the Russians and must now be used extensively by all governments. As Clipper abailart says: "One wonders whether it is worth it since the sort of chattering 'politico' twits who bounce soundbites off each other seven days a week are fortunately hermetically sealed in their own collective fantasies." However, the manipulation of statistics as Trending Topics which muddies the water. Unfortunately, open also means open to abuse. I wonder if it means that those of us who want open discussion (and meaningful inferences from the flow) will need to do it in closed groups?
