POPSThe Conservative Bastion " Both women came from fundamentalist backgrounds and attended religious colleges. And both wrestled for years with the guilt they felt over being lesbians. "I thought, 'God, you played a really horrible trick on me -- making me think this was really disgusting and then making me gay,' " The couple, both 47, moved to Murrieta from Orange County looking for a place with good schools and space for children. They knew it was a conservative town but believed they could fit in. "We have always lived comfortably with our neighbors and have always been who we are," Lorian said. Now they wonder if their efforts to blend in hurt them. "

POPSApparent change in women’s fidelity "Dr. Fisher notes that infidelity is common across cultures, and that in hunting and gathering societies, there is no evidence that women are any less adulterous than men. The fidelity gap may be explained more by cultural pressures than any real difference in sex drives between men and women. " more women talking about affairs centered on “electronic” contact. “I see a changing landscape in which the emphasis is less on the sex than it is on the openness and intimacy and the revelation of secrets,” Are these also signs of the revolution ?-)

POPS Oil Falls Below $64 As Economy Outweighs OPEC News that Japan's Nippon Oil plans a 15 percent cut in November crude oil refining, from a year earlier and data showing China's September oil demand growth was its slowest in 10 months also weighed on oil prices. Despite OPEC's Friday decision to cut back on production, oil prices have continued to slide. Kuwait's oil minister said OPEC was concerned about an oil price fall after it cut output but it would take time to decide if the cut was sufficient, while Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said OPEC should create a crude price band between $70 and $90 per barrel. Separately, crude oil speculators on the New York Mercantile Exchange shifted to a net long position while open interest dropped in the week to October 21, the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission reported on Friday.

POPSThe Boiling Frog People used to imagine that history is inevitably cyclical, but what I'm describing here has never happened before. In all of 3,000,000 years, humans have never been crowded anywhere. But now the people of a single culture -- our culture -- are learning what it means to be crowded. It was getting crowded, and overworked, overgrazed land was becoming less and less productive. There were more people, and they were competing for dwindling resources. It's during this period, starting around 5000 years ago, that we see the first states formed for the purpose of armed defense and aggression. It's during this period that we see the standing army forged as the monarch's sword of power. The water is getting hotter -- always getting hotter.

POPSGOP Fight in Nevada Could Spell Trouble For McCain
Dr. Paul has suspended his campaign, but his libertarian loyalists have not. Dr. Paul's message resonated particularly in Nevada, a state where frontier spirit and personal freedom runs deep, and he captured second place in the January state caucuses, ahead of Sen. McCain. Hard-line libertarian voters see Sen. McCain as the embodiment of a Republican Party they no longer trust to protect their freedoms. Citing the campaign finance rules and ban on college sports betting that he championed, many conservatives are rejecting the presumptive Republican nominee along with the party establishment. Recent history shows Nevada's frustrated conservatives can swing an election. The last Texan presidential candidate preaching small government, Ross Perot, took 10% of the vote here in 1992 and 27% in 1996, helping Democrat Bill Clinton to carry the state both times. A Libertarian Senate candidate in 1998 tipped a close race to Majority Leader Harry Reid.

POPSArtic sea ice drops to 2nd lowest level on record I'm not easy to convince. A claim has to have proof - there has to be evidence, there has to be numbers, and it has to make sense. After lots of reading, lots of listening, lots of thinking, I now can say that I know global warming is real and potentially devastating. I honestly don't get why some people don't see that. I know that that most of the people that don't believe aren't stupid or evil. PLEASE stop, take another look, and reconsider the possibility that global warming is happening now and that there will be grave consequences that we need to understand. Some of us on the other side have done that for years. What if you are wrong? You should at least be able to answer that question - I can.
