POPS The 110th's Do-Nothingness -- They Need A Rest: Yipee A bipartisan group of senators who sought a compromise in the rancorous energy debate won't introduce their bill before lawmakers adjourn for the elections, several Senate aides said Thursday. Since the group won't offer a bill, it's unclear how the energy debate will unfold days before the scheduled Sept. 26 adjournment. Anyway, it sounds like the Senate will now not find the time to debate and vote on an energy bill before the recess (they need rest, darn it, they've been back at work for days! ), but that seems better than passing a meaningless bill and taking the issue off the table for the foreseeable future. For a change, the 110th's do-nothingness and partisan gridlock is a blessing.

POPSClubForGrowth Vote Alert - Energy Bill The moratorium on drilling in the Outer Continental Shelf expires at the end of the year, yet supporters of this bill want to continue that ban on nearly 90% of OCS through this proposal. Along with the tax hikes and the subsidies for alternative fuels, there is nothing pro-growth about this proposal. In addition, we recently learned that an undisclosed, non-germane $2 billion earmark was inserted into this bill in complete violation of House rules. It should be vigorously voted down.

POPSMcCain Surrogate Accuses Obama of Absenteeism Hypocrisy, thy initials are GOP. This also highlights something I've been saying; Republicans are bad on the economy because they suck at math and logic. First, 45.5% is there more often than gone, Lindsey gets it backward. Second, if Obama's "never challenged his own party to do anything different," how can he possibly be the most liberal senator ? I know that Team McCain's having trouble keeping his positions consistent, but if they could just keep their talking points in agreement, it'd be a big improvement.

POPS"Texas Tea Party" Held Over Through Friday From Amanda Carpenter at Townhall: I can tell you, this is going to be a full-week assault. A GOP aide showed me a week-long schedule of GOP floor speaking dates on energy while the rest of Congress is on their 5-week taxpayer paid vacation. I'll try to share that schedule with you later. If your congressman isn't on it, you should give their office call! Update: The #dontGo feed on Twitter has become de facto Update Central, but your options for following along (despite the lack of audio or video recording equipment) continues to grow, including: * Live blog at minority leader John Boehner's site * The Facebook * The YouTube Channel Update: Oil just dipped below $120 per barrel for the first time in 3 months Update: During the occasional press conferences, Minority whip Roy Blunt has just made it pretty clear that the fun will continue at least throughout the week.

POPSHouse Republicans Gas "Talkathon" To Continue Monday "But the American people are suffering,” Boehner and Blunt said in the memo. “The consequences of continued congressional inaction on gas prices are unacceptable. We’ve called on the Speaker to call Congress back into an emergency session this month and schedule a vote on the American Energy Act. We must continue to make a stand until the Speaker complies.” Update - Neither Boehner nor Blunt are expected to be in attendance at Monday's talkfest, and its unclear if they will show up at any point during the week. The session will not be televised, but Republicans felt they got a lot of good press out of Friday's "revolt," so they will be back at it again, and younger GOP lawmakers were clearly energized by the tactic, something not evident among Republicans for most of the 110th Congress. hotair at following link: http://hotair.com/archives/2008/08/03/its-on-house-republicans-oil-protest-to-resume-tomorrow/

POPSVoters Give Congress Nine-Percent Approval Rating Last month, 11% of voters gave the legislature good or excellent ratings. Congress has not received higher than a 15% approval rating since the beginning of 2008. The percentage of Democrats who give Congress positive ratings fell from 17% last month to 13% this month. The number of Democrats who give Congress a poor rating remained unchanged. Among Republicans, 8% give Congress good or excellent ratings, up just a point from last month. Sixty-five percent (65%) of GOP voters say Congress is doing a poor job, down a single point from last month. Voters not affiliated with either party are the most critical of Congressional performance. Just 3% of those voters give Congress positive ratings, down from 6% last month. Sixty-three percent (63%) believe Congress is doing a poor job, up from 57% last month. http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/mood_of_america/congressional_performance/congressional_performance

POPS Democrats Juggle Iraq, Economy (continued) there is also less pressure on them to back a withdrawal from Iraq, Republicans say. While Democrats say they plan to keep the pressure on the Bush administration to change course in Iraq, they are now emphasizing the economic impacts resulting from the war’s costs. Their base appears to be resigned to the fact that Congress won’t be able to force a change in military strategy this year and is instead planning a series of ads to make Republicans pay for their war support at the polls. The coalition, which calls itself the Iraq/Recession Campaign, is seeking to tie the downturn in the economy to the war costs, and plans also to target Republican senators up for reelection, including Susan Collins (Maine), John Sununu (N.H.), Norm Coleman (Minn.) and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.). The coalition includes MoveOn.org, the Service Employees International Union and the Center for American Progress.

POPSDeadlock On Surveillance Law Shows No Signs Of Breaking Soon
Democrats counter that it was Republicans who blocked a second temporary extension of the expired law. They maintain that the government has all the intelligence tools it needs while lawmakers work on a compromise As with every major policy fight in the remaining months of the 110th Congress, political considerations are looming large. Republicans, confident that they can win any test of wills involving national security, have honed their attack into an accusation that the Democrats care more about enriching trial lawyers than protecting the country The rhetorical battle will certainly continue. Peter Hoekstra of Michigan, the top Republican on the House Intelligence panel, plans to give a speech at the conservative Heritage Foundation on Tuesday blasting House Democrats for not clearing the Senate legislation. The Justice Department is providing the House Judiciary Committee with at least some of its opinions regarding the legality of the NSA’s warrantless surveillance

POPSWWII Filipino Veterans - Promised U.S. Veteran Benefits - Betrayed
But on February 18, 1946, the Congress passed and President Truman signed Public Law 70-301, known as the Rescission Act of 1946. It said that the service of Filipinos "shall not be deemed to be or to have been service in the military or national forces of the United States or any component thereof or any law of the United States conferring rights, privileges or benefits." Ever since, Filipino veterans and others appalled by this injustice have lobbied without success for a reversal of the Rescission Act. Mr. Ingles, whose sacrifices are vividly described above, gave voice to their frustration in his interview: "..the succeeding people who governed the States forgot about the promises made by Roosevelt when he encouraged Filipinos to fight for the Americans, and this we feel very bitter. In fact, even myself, because of what happened to us, I never received any pension from the U.S. Government as a soldier." The GOP is so petty they can't find $300 Million to honor a p
